Recensione della CPU Desktop AMD Ryzen 9 3900X: 12 cores in un Socket AM4

L'attacco dei 12-cores! La serie Ryzen 3000 ci ha già impressionato, e ora è la volta del 3900X di mostrarci di cosa è capace. Abbiamo messo il Ryzen 9 contro l'Intel Core i9-9900K per vedere chi vince la corona della CPU desktop geming. AMD è sulla strada giusta per rendere la vita difficile per Intel con il continuo miglioramento della sua serie Ryzen Zen. L'azienda è ora alla sua terza generazione Zen in altrettanti anni, il che dovrebbe essere una buona notizia per il consumatore, in quanto sfida Intel a rimanere competitiva.

La serie Ryzen 3000 è la prima a portare i chip da 7 nm sul mercato desktop, anche se AMD aveva già introdotto la produzione da 7 nm per le sue GPU Radeon VII e Navi. Tuttavia, la serie Ryzen 3000 non è interamente a 7 nm, con AMD che utilizza un processo a 12 nm per le proprie matrici di I/O. Questi includono anche il controller di memoria, che AMD ha separato dalla CPU sotto il dissipatore di calore. Quest'ultimo è alloggiato sotto i cosiddetti cluster CCD, che sono prodotti da TSMC.

Il Ryzen 9 3900X è costituito da due cluster CCD, ciascuno con due moduli CCX. Ogni core CCX integra tre cores CPU, per un totale di 12 cores. Il Ryzen 9 3900X supporta anche il multithreading simultaneo (SMT), consentendo di eseguire fino a 24 threads contemporaneamente. La CPU ha 70 MB di cache combinata L2 e L3, ora chiamata gaming cache, che è un enorme miglioramento rispetto alla serie Ryzen 2000. Anche AMD ha fatto un passo simile con Zen+ rispetto a Zen.

Vale la pena ricordare che c'è ancora di più in arrivo da Zen 2, con AMD che rilascerà il Ryzen 9 3950X a settembre. Questo avrà 16 cores, che dovrebbero offrire prestazioni multicore ancora migliori rispetto al Ryzen 9 3900X.

AMD raccomanda di utilizzare la RAM DDR4-3733 CL17 con processori Zen 2. DDR4-3600 CL16 offre un miglior rapporto qualità-prezzo, ma la DDR4-3733 CL17 permette ad Infinity Fabric (IF) di funzionare in sincronia con la RAM, ottenendo le più basse latenze possibili. Tuttavia, come illustra il grafico a destra, l'utilizzo di RAMF a clock più alto spinge l'IF a funzionare in modalità 2:1, piuttosto che 1:1 come fa con 3733 C17, che aumenta le velocità di latenza.

Per fortuna, l'architettura Zen 2 non richiede l'acquisto di una nuova scheda madre. AMD e i suoi partners pubblicano gli aggiornamenti del BIOS per tutti i chipset X470 e B450, rendendoli compatibili con la serie Ryzen 3000. Anche le schede X370 e B350 sono parzialmente supportate, anche se si consiglia di verificare se la scheda madre funziona con Zen 2 prima di acquistare una nuova CPU.

Purtroppo, il PCIe 4.0 completo è attualmente limitato al nuovo chipset X570. Mentre alcuni OEM offrono il supporto PCIe 4.0 per schede madri più vecchie, AMD ha impedito questo con l'attuale set di codici AGESA.

Benchmarks Processore

Il Ryzen 9 3900X ha completato i nostri benchmarks della CPU con colori brillanti, spesso superando di gran lunga il Core i9-9900K. Tuttavia, la nostra unità di prova non ha potuto farlo in tutte le discipline, con AMD ancora dietro Intel nei compiti single-core. Il Zen 2 è migliorato enormemente rispetto al Zen+, ma il Ryzen 9 3900X ha ottenuto circa il 2% in meno del Core i9-9900K nel Cinebench R15 Single 64Bit, per esempio. Al contrario, il Ryzen 9 3900X ha superato il Ryzen 7 2700X e il Threadripper 2920X rispettivamente del 19% e del 17%. Queste differenze sottolineano il miglioramento delle prestazioni che i cores aggiuntivi e il passaggio a 7 nm apportano.

I recenti processori AMD hanno avuto prestazioni multicore migliori rispetto alle loro controparti Intel, quindi non sorprende vedere il Ryzen 9 3900X continuare questa tendenza. La nostra unità di prova ha ottenuto un colossale 49% in più del Core i9-9900K nel CB R15 Multi 64Bit, mentre ha ottenuto un sano 16% di vantaggio anche sul Threadripper 2920X. Tra l'altro, quest'ultima pure ha 12 cores e può eseguire fino a 24 threads, sottolineando i miglioramenti che AMD ha apportato tra le generazioni.

Prestazioni Gaming

La maggior parte dei giochi attualmente non è ottimizzata per l'utilizzo di più di 8 cores, il che significa che il Ryzen 9 3900X non può sfruttare appieno il suo potenziale. Lo stesso vale per i gaming benchmarks sintetici, con il Ryzen 9 3900X che spesso ottiene un punteggio inferiore a quello del Ryzen 7 3700X in 3DMark, ad esempio. La differenza tra le due CPU è spesso solo del 2% circa, il che è trascurabile. Il Ryzen 9 3900X ha anche una performance rating inferiore del 6% rispetto al Core i9-9900K, ma, ancora una volta, non si tratta di una differenza enorme. Tra l'altro, il Core i7-8700K raggiunge il più alto rating di prestazioni delle CPU nella nostra tabella di confronto, nonostante non sia la migliore CPU di gioco acquistabile.

Lo stesso vale per la maggior parte dei giochi che abbiamo testato a 720p, anche se il Ryzen 9 3900X raggiunge occasionalmente qualche fotogramma in più del Ryzen 7 3700X. Forza Horizon 4 e For Honor sono buoni esempi di Ryzen 9 3900X che ha un vantaggio rispetto al suo fratello minore Zen 2, ma quest'ultimo gode di un vantaggio del 2% in altri giochi come The Witcher 3. Al contrario, il Core i9-9900K segna costantemente più del Ryzen 9 3900X nei nostri gaming benchmarks, nonostante AMD abbia ridotto tale divario fino al 25% rispetto al Ryzen 7 2700X.

Il divario tra le migliori CPU AMD e Intel si restringe ulteriormente a risoluzioni più elevate, anche se soprattutto nei giochi che non sono pesanti per la CPU. In generale, il Core i9-9900K gode di un vantaggio del 4% rispetto ai Ryzen 7 3700X e Ryzen 9 3900X a 1080p e oltre. I due processori Zen 2 sono alla pari tra loro.

Ryzen 9 3900X & Radeon RX 5700 XT

Abbiamo usato il Radeon RX Vega 64 per il nostro primo set di benchmarks per motivi di comparabilità, ma abbiamo anche pensato che fosse adatto a vedere quali miglioramenti di prestazioni porta PCIe 4. Per questo motivo, abbiamo rivisitato i nostri gaming benchmarks con la Radeon RX 5700 XT, che offre circa il 10% in più di frame rate rispetto alla Radeon RX Vega 64. Tuttavia, lo stesso vale per il Ryzen 7 2700X, quindi la larghezza di banda aggiuntiva che il PCIe 4.0 offre non sembra dare vantaggi tangibili durante il gaming. Indipendentemente da ciò, ci si può comunque aspettare un salto di prestazioni se si passa dalla Radeon RX Vega 64 alla Radeon RX 5700 XT.

Prestazioni con le applicazioni

Il nostro sistema di test ha funzionato senza problemi durante i nostri test. Non abbiamo notato lunghi tempi di attesa, il che non dovrebbe sorprendere da un sistema alimentato da 12 cores. Avevamo anche un veloce SSD a portata di mano, così abbiamo deciso di vedere se PCIe 4.0 offriva velocità di trasferimento migliori rispetto a PCIe 3.0. L'unità SSD Corsair da 2 TB che abbiamo utilizzato è un'unità veloce, ma PCIe 4.0 ha aiutato a raggiungere circa 68 MB/s 4K di velocità di lettura, che è un velore eccezionalmente elevato. Questo dovrebbe aiutare il sistema a caricare rapidamente i file di piccole dimensioni, riducendo i tempi di caricamento del sistema operativo e del gioco.

Dubitiamo che la maggior parte delle persone noterà la differenza tra PCIe 3.0 e PCIe 4.0 nell'uso quotidiano. Quest'ultimo migliorerà significativamente la velocità di lettura e scrittura sequenziale grazie alla sua larghezza di banda raddoppiata, ma i risultati sono trascurabili nella pratica.

Il Ryzen 9 3900X si avvicina al Ryzen 7 3700X nel PCMark, il che suggerisce che il benchmark non può utilizzare i 12 cores del primo. Tuttavia, il Ryzen 9 3900X ha funzionato ancora bene, superando il Core i9-9900K nel PCMark 10 e comportandosi praticamente come il Core i7-9700K nel PCMark 8.

I processori AMD ora, come quelli sviluppati da Intel, superano la loro potenza termica di progettazione dichiarata (TDP). Il Ryzen 9 3900X ha un TDP da 105 W, anche se può superare questo valore, come abbiamo scoperto con la nostra unità di prova Ryzen 7 3700X. Ridurre il TDP nel BIOS permette al Ryzen 9 3900X di raggiungere 142 W, che è significativamente superiore al TDP specificato.

Il nostro sistema di test ha consumato 81,6 W al minimo, che è appena davanti al Ryzen 7 3700X su 79,2 W. Il consumo di potenza è aumentato a 229 W durante il funzionamento di CB R15 Multi 64Bit, che è solo il 5% in più di quello che il Ryzen 7 2700X è riuscito a fare nello stesso test. Un confronto più equo sarebbe con Threadripper 2970WX, che pure anche 12 cores e supporta 24 threads. Il Threadripper 2970WX, al confronto, ha raggiunto il picco di 273 W durante lo stesso test, sottolineando l'efficienza dell'architettura Zen 2.

Il consumo medio di potenza è stato di 210 W durante una prova di stress Prime95 ma ha raggiunto il picco di 256 W, anche se questo valore esclude quanto il nostro monitor di prova assorbiva dalla rete elettrica. La CPU non è sempre in grado di mantenere il suo TDP di picco, il che spiega perché il nostro sistema di test ha avuto una media significativamente inferiore al suo consumo di picco.

Abbiamo anche considerato il consumo energetico durante il gioco, con il Ryzen 9 3900X che si è dimostrato più economico del Ryzen 7 2700X. Il nostro sistema di test Ryzen 9 3900X ha consumato 392 W durante il gaming, che è solo il 4% in più del Ryzen 7 3700X. Tuttavia, la maggior parte di questa potenza viene erogata dall'RX Vega 64.

Il radiatore Wraith Prism incluso ha lottato per mantenere fresco il Ryzen 9 3900X durante i nostri test, con temperature del core che hanno raggiunto un picco di 86 °C durante il nostro stress test in una configurazione di prova aperta. Le temperature aumenteranno in un case chiuso, quindi raccomandiamo di utilizzare almeno un sistema di raffreddamento ad aria di migliore qualità. I sistemi di raffreddamento ad aria con attacco AM4 costano attualmente circa 65 dollari, ma suggeriamo di utilizzare un 240 o 280 AIO se possibile.

Overclocking

Abbiamo anche provato l'overclocking della Ryzen 9 3900X, ma con un successo limitato. Siamo riusciti a raggiungere brevemente i 4,3 GHz su tutti i cores, ma la temperatura del core ha rapidamente raggiunto i 100 °C nel CB R15 Multi 64Bit anche con la ventola della CPU impostata al 100% e in un sistema di test aperto. Il consumo medio di potenza è stato di 321 W durante CB R15 Multi 64Bit con la CPU a 4.3 GHz, che è un aumento di quasi 100 W. In breve, questo è un eccesso di wattaggio aggiuntivo per il Wraith Prism.

AMD sostiene che il Ryzen 9 3900X può raggiungere i 4.6 GHz, ma solo con le sue caratteristiche di overclocking interno (PBO) disattivate, il che ostacola le prestazioni del single-core. In breve, non consigliamo l'overclocking del Ryzen 9 3900X a meno che non si disponga di un sistema di raffreddamento AIO. Anche in questo caso, i guadagni di prestazioni non giustificano l'enorme aumento del consumo energetico o il peggioramento delle prestazioni del single-core.

AMD ha messo molta pressione su Intel con il rilascio della famiglia Ryzen 3000. L'azienda ha fatto bene molte cose, il nuovo vigore del mercato delle CPU desktop dovrebbe essere musica per le orecchie di tutti. Tuttavia, i proprietari di un'attuale piattaforma Intel non devono preoccuparsi, dato che il Core i9-9900K rimane più adatto al gioco del Ryzen 9 3900X. Se si utilizza il PC esclusivamente per il gaming, Intel rimane la scelta migliore.

    I costanti miglioramenti stanno ora dando i loro frutti, con AMD che ha migliorato significativamente le prestazioni single-core dei suoi processori desktop. Il Ryzen 9 3900X raggiunge quasi le vette del Core i9-9900K nelle attività single core e si fa valere nel lavoro multi-core. I giochi sono ancora il punto di forza del Core i9-9900K però.

Tuttavia, si consiglia di considerare il Ryzen 9 3900X se sei uno streamer o creatore di contenuti, in quanto il processore brilla nel lavoro multi-core. Meglio ancora, in qualche modo ha un consumo energetico relativamente basso per un chip a 12 cores. AMD ha anche eliminato per lo più il deficit di prestazioni single-core che esisteva tra i processori Intel e la serie Ryzen 2000, con il Ryzen 9 3900X che si avvicina al Core i9-9900K. Attualmente, i giochi non beneficiano di più di 8 cores, ma questo potrebbe cambiare in futuro, il che porrebbe la Ryzen 9 3900X in una buona posizione.
La Ryzen 9 3900X è venduta al dettaglio per 590 dollari, anche se la disponibilità è attualmente scarsa. Quindi, il processore potrebbe essere più vicino al Core i9-9900K al lancio, ma i prezzi dovrebbero alla fine scendere, il che potrebbe dare al Ryzen 9 3900X un miglior rapporto qualità-prezzo rispetto all'attuale processore desktop di punta di Intel.
Un retrogusto un po' amaro rimane comunque, dato che solo il chipset X570 può trarre vantaggio dal PCIe 4.0. Almeno le schede X470 e B450 supporteranno i nuovi processori Matisse dopo un aggiornamento del BIOS. Anche le vecchie schede X370 e B350 sono parzialmente compatibili, il che è un bonus. Si consiglia di verificare se la scheda funzionerà prima di acquistare un chip Ryzen 3000.
In definitiva, le restrizioni PCIe 4.0 non dovrebbero essere un problema per la maggior parte delle persone, dato che attualmente offre poco vantaggio pratico nei giochi rispetto a PCIe 3.0 nonostante la sua maggiore larghezza di banda.
Nel complesso, il Ryzen 9 3900X è attualmente la migliore CPU desktop consumer sul mercato grazie alle sue eccellenti prestazioni multi-core. Il Core i9-9900K ha il vantaggio rispetto al chip AMD 12-core Zen 2, ma noi raccomandiamo di scegliere il primo rispetto al secondo solo se sei un drogato di FPS. In caso contrario, potete optare per il Ryzen in quanto offre una migliore esperienza a tutto tondo rispetto al Core i9.
