Intel Core i5-8279U

L'Intel Core i5-8279U è un SoC quad-core per notebook basato sull'architettura di Coffee Lake ed è stato annunciato nel primo trimestre del 2019. Rispetto al suo predecessore Core i5-7287U, la CPU è ora un quad-core con supporto Hyperthreading per l'esecuzione di un massimo di 8 thread contemporaneamente. La frequenza di base è di 2,4 GHz, ma il Turbo arriva fino a 4,1 GHz. È inoltre dotato di una GPU Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655 con 128 MB di eDRAM, un controller di memoria a doppio canale (DDR4), nonché di decodifica video VP9 e H.265 e di codifica. Il chip è ancora prodotto in un processo a 14 nm con transistor FinFET. 

Rispetto al più veloce modello Core i7 (ad esempio Core i7-8559U) con eDRAM e 28 Watt, l'i5-8279U dispone solo di 6 MB di cache intelligente e di un clock più lento della GPU Iris Plus.

Architettura

Intel utilizza fondamentalmente la stessa microarchitettura rispetto alla Kaby Lake, quindi le prestazioni per-MHz non differiscono. Il produttore ha solo rielaborato la tecnologia Speed Shift per una più rapida regolazione dinamica delle tensioni e degli orologi, e il processo migliorato a 14nm permette frequenze molto più alte combinate con una migliore efficienza rispetto a prima.

Prestazioni

Considerando gli orologi del Core i5-8259U, le sue prestazioni dovrebbero essere tra i 15W del modello Core i7-8650U. L'i5-82769U dovrebbe essere ancora più veloce dell'i7-8650U in pratica grazie all'aumento del TDP, specialmente durante i carichi di lavoro sostenuti. Rispetto all'analogo Intel Core i5-8269U denominato i5-8269U, l'8279U offre prestazioni leggermente inferiori (-200 MHz Turbo, -100 MHz base) anche se il nome suggerisce il contrario.

Grafica

La grafica integrata Intel Iris Plus 655 Graphics è il modello GT3e della GPU Kaby Lake (Intel Gen. 9.5). Ha 48 unità di esecuzione che girano a 300-1150 MHz e le prestazioni sono paragonabili a quelle di una GeForce 930M o 940MX grazie alla veloce cache eDRAM. Tuttavia, non ci sono miglioramenti significativi rispetto al vecchio Iris Plus 650, quindi i giochi moderni spesso non possono essere giocati senza problemi o solo alle impostazioni più basse o medie, rispettivamente.

Contrariamente a Skylake, Kaby lake ora supporta anche H.265/HEVC Main 10 con profondità di colore a 10 bit e il codec VP9 di Google. I processori dual-core Kaby Lake annunciati a gennaio dovrebbero supportare anche l'HDCP 2.2.

Consumo energetico

Il chip è prodotto in un processo migliorato a 14 nm con transistor FinFET, che migliora ulteriormente l'efficienza. Intel specifica il TDP con 28 Watt, che può essere ridotto a 23 Watt (cTDP Down) a seconda dello scenario di utilizzo. Il TDP è piuttosto elevato rispetto al comune TDP da 15 Watt per i processori quad-core, ma consente un migliore utilizzo di CPU e GPU Turbo.
