Intel i7-8650U

L'Intel Core i7-8650U è un efficiente SoC quad-core per notebook e Ultrabook basato sulla generazione Kaby Lake Refresh ed è stato annunciato ad agosto 2017. Contrariamente al suo diretto predecessore il Core i7-7600U, che erano ancora dual-cores, l'i7-8650U è dotato di quattro core ma ad una frequenza base inferiore di 1,9 GHz. Il Turbo Boost può arrivare fino a 4,2 GHz e quindi offrire anche buone velocità single core a breve termine. La GPU è ora chiamata Intel UHD Graphics 620 ma per il resto è identica alla Intel HD Graphics 620. Il controller di memoria integrato supporta DDR4-2400 / LPDDR3-2133 e la memoria dual channel.

Architettura

Intel utilizza fondamentalmente la stessa micro architettura rispetto a Skylake, quindi le prestazioni per-MHz non differiscono. Il produttore ha solo rielaborato la tecnologia Speed Shift per regolazioni dinamiche più veloci di tensioni e clock, e il processo migliorato a 14nm permette frequenze molto più alte combinate con una migliore efficienza di prima.

Prestazioni

Secondo Intel, i nuovi modelli quad core sono fino al 40% più veloci dei loro predecessori dual core. A causa del TDP ridotto e dello stesso processo a 14nm+, le prestazioni a lungo termine e il comportamento di throttling saranno interessanti e dipenderanno dal design del portatile. Pertanto, i vecchi modelli quad-core da 35 Watt dovrebbero essere più veloci nelle applicazioni che richiedono carichi di CPU più lunghi. Le prestazioni però dipendono molto dalle impostazioni TDP e dalla soluzione di raffreddamento del portatile. In particolare, i carichi più lunghi mostreranno risultati diversi nei diversi portatili.

Grafica

La grafica integrata Intel UHD Graphics 620 (Intel Gen 9.5) non è stata modificata dai chip Kaby Lake di 8a generazione. Con una veloce memoria dual-channel può raggiungere le prestazioni di una GeForce 920M dedicata.

Contrariamente a Skylake, Kaby lake ora supporta anche H.265/HEVC Main 10 con una profondità di colore a 10 bit così come il codec VP9 di Google. I processori dual-core Kaby Lake annunciati a gennaio dovrebbero supportare anche HDCP 2.2.

Consumo energetico

Il chip è prodotto in un processo migliorato a 14nm con transistor FinFET (14nm+), lo stesso dei processori Kaby Lake di settima generazione. Intel specifica ancora il TDP con 15 Watt, che è tipico dei chip ULV. A seconda dello scenario di utilizzo, il TDP può variare tra 7,5 (cTDP Down) e 25 Watt.
