Recensione della GPU Desktop AMD Radeon VII

Pronta a durare a lungo grazie ai 16 GB di VRAM AMD sta cercando di scuotere il mercato delle GPU desktop con la Radeon VII, che è la prima scheda ad essere prodotta su un processo FinFET a 7 nm. L'azienda ha anche equipaggiato la Radeon VII con 16 GB di VRAM HBM2, ma resta da vedere se questo è sufficiente per mettere NVIDIA sotto pressione. AMD ha presentato la Radeon VII al CES 2019 e ha basato la GPU sulla sua architettura Vega. La scheda è anche la prima ad essere prodotta con un processo FinFET a 7 nm e dispone di 16 GB di VRAM, che dovrebbe essere una garanzia ance per il futuro. Al contrario, la RTX 2080 Ti, che attualmente è la GPU di punta per chi vuole risparmiara, ha solo 11 GB di VRAM, quindi la Radeon VII ha un vantaggio in questo senso.

L'architettura più piccola dovrebbe anche migliorare significativamente le prestazioni per watt e aiutare la scheda a funzionare in modo più efficiente. AMD ha inserito circa 13,2 miliardi di transistor in 331 mm², insieme a 3.840 unità shader e un'interfaccia di memoria a 4.096 bit.

Il Radeon VII consuma ancora circa 300 W sotto carico, per il quale AMD ha progettato un nuovo sistema di raffreddamento. La GPU è dotata di dissipatori a camera di vapore e di una serie di alette in alluminio raffreddate da tre ventole assiali. In precedenza, l'azienda ha equipaggiato le sue GPU di riferimento con ventole radiali, ma il design di una ventola non è necessariamente più efficace dell'altra, e dipende maggiormente da come AMD ha ottimizzato le tre ventole per funzionare adeguatamente sotto carico.

La Radeon VII ha anche tre DisplayPort e una connessione HDMI, che sono ben distanziate. La GPU richiede anche due connettori di alimentazione a 8 pin.

Il Sistema di Test

Abbiamo basato il nostro sistema di test sul Gigabyte X470 Aorus Gaming 7 Wi-Fi che abbiamo abbinato ad un AMD Ryzen 7 2700X, che offre buone prestazioni della CPU in relazione al prezzo. Abbiamo anche dotato il sistema di un Be Quiet Silent Loop 280 mm AIO e 16 GB di G-Skill RAM che si trova a 3.400 MHz. Abbiamo anche utilizzato un monitor Acer Predator XB321HK in modo da poter testare i giochi a 4K.

La Radeon VII è attualmente la GPU desktop di punta di AMD e ha una velocità di clock di base di 1.400 MHz che può aumentare fino a 1.750 MHz quando necessario. La scheda ha anche 60 CU, 16 GB di VRAM HBM2, 4.096 bus di memoria e 1.024 GB/s di larghezza di banda di memoria. La GPU ha anche un chip significativamente più piccolo dei suoi predecessori da 14 nm, ma AMD ha stipati 13,2 miliardi di transistor sulla Radeon VII rispetto ai 12,5 miliardi presenti sulla Radeon RX Vega 64. La prima ha anche 3.840 unità shader, ma non supporta il raytracing o i tensor cores come fanno le GPU NVIDIA RTX 20 Series. Vale la pena ricordare che la Radeon VII è valutata per consumare 300 W, che è 5 W in più del suo predecessore e 50 W in più della RTX 2080 Ti.

La Radeon VII dovrebbe offrire prestazioni di gioco nettamente migliori rispetto alla Radeon RX Vega 64 e dovrebbe essere alla pari con la NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080. In breve, non dovrebbero esserci problemi a giocare ai moderni giochi tripla A a 4K con la Radeon VII.

Synthetic Benchmarks

La Radeon VII si è comportata alla pari con l'ASUS ROG Strix RTX 2080 OC nei benchmark sintetici e almeno il 20% migliore della Radeon RX Vega 64. Allo stesso modo, la GPU spazza via la Radeon RX 590 e la RX 580. Quindi, la Radeon VII è attualmente la scheda grafica più veloce nell'angolo rosso, ma è lontana da NVIDIA Titan RTX e non è nemmeno lontana da Titan X Pascal.

La Radeon VII brilla quando si gioca a 4K, ma la RX Vega 64 sarebbe un acquisto migliore se si gioca a 1080p in quanto c'è poca differenza pratica tra le due schede a questa risoluzione. Nel complesso, la Radeon VII difficilmente suda di fronte ai moderni giochi tripla A anche a 4K, con l'eccezione di "Kingdom Come: Deliverance" e "Monster Hunter World", dove ha una media inferiore a 35 FPS nei nostri test.

Vale la pena tener presente che la GeForce RTX 2080 ha generalmente superato la nostra unità di test e ha ottenuto fino al 50% in più di framerate in giochi come "GTA V" a 4K. Prevedibilmente, il Titan RTX ha terminato la parte superiore di quasi tutte le nostre tabelle di confronto 4K con le schede della serie RTX 20, superando la loro vecchia controparte Titan a 1080p.

Abbiamo anche sottoposto la Radeon VII a un'ora di benchmark "The Witcher 3", che abbiamo eseguito sul preset ultra. La nostra unità di test ha avuto una media di 75 FPS anche dopo un'ora, il che sottolinea l'efficacia del nuovo sistema di raffreddamento di AMD.

Prestazioni di calcolo

La Radeon VII supera la GeForce RTX 2080 nella LuxMark Room, ma le due GPU hanno regolarmente scambiato i posti nelle nostre tabelle di confronto con altri benchmark. Al contrario, la Radeon VII ha concluso circa il 15% dietro l'RTX 2080 in LuxMark Sala e ComputeMark. La GPU si è comportata alla pari con il suo predecessore in benchmark come SPECviewperf 12, ma ci saremmo aspettati che la Radeon VII si comportasse meglio in questo caso. La Radeon VII è più efficiente delle sue controparti NVIDIA, ma c'è ancora spazio per migliorare sia il consumo energetico che il rumore della ventola. Nel complesso, il sistema di raffreddamento a tripla ventola consente alla GPU di mantenere la sua velocità di clock di base di 1.750 MHz alle impostazioni di fabbrica. Tuttavia, queste eccellenti prestazioni termiche vanno a scapito del rumore della ventola, che gira a circa 2.800 giri/min a carico sostenuto, che equivale al 61% della velocità della ventola. Inoltre, la nostra unità di test ha raggiunto 78 °C (~172 °F) durante le nostre prove di stress, che è ben lontano dai 106 °C (~223 °F) a cui scatterà il throttling.

Abbassando la tensione della GPU può migliorare la sua efficienza, ma il livello a cui la tensione può essere abbassata varia da scheda a scheda, quindi si prega di tenerlo a mente se si sceglie di abbassare la tensione della GPU. La nostra unità di prova potrebbe funzionare stabilmente a 0,965 V, che rappresenta un undervolt di 0,103 V e ha contribuito a ridurre il consumo energetico durante un test di stress FurMark di oltre 50 W. La scheda ha comunque consumato 203 W sotto carico sostenuto. Inoltre la sottotensione non ha influito molto sulle temperature interne, ma la velocità della ventola è scesa notevolmente.

In breve, l'undervolt della Radeon VII rende la GPU un'opzione molto più attraente secondo noi. L'undervolt non ha influenzato i framerate nei giochi e le permette di consumare meno energia rispetto alle sue controparti NVIDIA pur offrendo prestazioni eccezionali.

Si prega di tenere a mente che la Radeon VII non ha molto spazio per l'overclocking. I nostri sforzi si traducono in miglioramenti delle prestazioni inferiori al 10%, ma potreste essere in grado di estrarre un overclock più alto con un raffreddatore ad acqua più potente.

Infine, abbiamo esaminato il consumo energetico del nostro sistema di test nei giochi, che abbiamo condotto con "The Witcher 3" giocato all'ultra preset. Il nostro sistema di test ha avuto una media di 339 W durante il nostro test di gioco, che è di circa il 17% o 69 W in meno rispetto al nostro sistema di test alimentato RX Vega 64. Allo stesso modo, anche la Radeon VII si è dimostrata più efficiente della Radeon RX 590, ma ha consumato circa 4 W in più della GeForce RTX 2070.

La Radeon VII è la risposta di AMD alla serie RTX 20 di NVIDIA. La GPU è un grande passo avanti rispetto alla Radeon RX Vega 64 e offre prestazioni migliori con un consumo energetico ridotto. Tuttavia, mentre la Radeon VII ha 5 GB in più di VRAM rispetto all'RTX 2080 Ti, la differenza è al momento quasi impercettibile, dato che anche i giochi più complessi a tripla A richiedono solo da 8 GB a 10 GB di VRAM. Pochi titoli richiedono più di 11 GB anche alle massime risoluzioni e con i massimi dettagli. Resta da vedere se questa situazione cambierà in futuro.

La Radeon VII è un'eccellente GPU desktop e la risposta di AMD alla serie NVIDIA RTX 20 Series. Anche se la scheda offre un ottimo rapporto qualità-prezzo, non può competere con l'RTX 2080 nei giochi.

La Radeon VII si trova dietro l'RTX 2080 nei test di gioco, ma è vero il contrario nelle applicazioni professionali dove la Radeon VII generalmente supera la sua controparte NVIDIA.

La GPU è eccellente anche out of the box, ma abbassando la tensione si porta la Radeon VII al livello successivo e aiuta a ridurre il rumore della ventola insieme al consumo energetico.
