Recensione della GPU Desktop NVIDIA TITAN RTX

Se i soldi non sono un problema... NVIDIA ha annunciato la TITAN RTX nel dicembre dello scorso anno, e ora l'abbiamo nei nostri laboratori. Continuate a leggere per scoprire come si comporta questo mostro di GPU Desktop nei nostri test e se è in grado di distinguersi dalle altre GPU NVIDIA.

Dopo il rilascio delle GPU GeForce RTX dell'architettura Turing di NVIDIA lo scorso anno, è apparso evidente che l'azienda aveva anche in programma di aggiornare la propria serie TITAN. NVIDIA ha presentato ufficialmente la TITAN RTX all'inizio di dicembre dello scorso anno, e ora l'abbiamo in laboratorio per metterla alla prova.

NVIDIA posiziona TITAN RTX davanti alla GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Founders Edition, con un numero maggiore di core CUDA, unità di texture, tensori e RT core. La TITAN RTX ha la stessa velocità di clock di base della RTX 2080 Ti, ma ha una velocità di boost clock di 225 MHz più elevata, abbinata a un bus di memoria maggiore e a una larghezza di banda di memoria superiore di 66 GB/s. Inoltre, NVIDIA ha equipaggiato la TITAN RTX con 24 GB GDDR6 VRAM, che è più del doppio di quello della RTX 2080 Ti. Queste prestazioni maggiori coincidono anche con un consumo aggiuntivo di 30 W che porta il TITAN RTX a 280 W, che è quasi 100 W in più rispetto alla RTX 2070 e 65 W in più rispetto alla GTX 1080 Ti.

La TITAN RTX ha lo stesso design del dissipatore della RTX 2080 Ti FE, ma NVIDIA ha rifinito il primo in oro rispetto all'argento che ha utilizzato sulle sue GPU GeForce RTX FE. La nostra unità di test è squisitamente realizzata con la scritta TITAN RTX dorata che spicca sul pannello centrale nero. NVIDIA ha riprogettato le ventole rispetto a quelle utilizzate nel TITAN X. L'azienda ha sostituito la singola ventola radiale con due ventole assiali, di cui ha anche equipaggiato le sue GPU GeForce RTX. NVIDIA afferma che le due ventole sono più efficaci nel raffreddare la camera di vapore della TITAN RTX rispetto alla singola ventola della TITAN X, che dovrebbe consentire alla scheda di funzionare in modo più freddo e mantenere meglio le sue prestazioni quando viene spinta al limite.

La TITAN RTX utilizza due prese di alimentazione a 8 pin e dispone di numerose porte. NVIDIA ha incluso tre porte DisplayPort 1.4, una porta HDMI 2.0b e una porta USB Type-C. È inoltre possibile utilizzare insieme due di questi mostri tramite NVLink Bridge di NVIDIA se si hanno circa 5.000 dollari da spendere in GPU.

Il ssistema di Test

Abbiamo basato il nostro sistema di test sulla scheda madre Wi-Fi GIGABYTE X470 Aorus Gaming 7 Wi-Fi che abbiamo abbinato ad una APU AMD Ryzen 7 2700X, che offre buone prestazioni della CPU per i soldi. Abbiamo anche scelto il Be Quiet Silent Loop 280 mm AIO per il raffreddamento e 16 GB di G-Skill DDR4-3400 RAM, mentre abbiamo installato Windows 10 Pro 64-bit su un SSD ADATA SP900 M.2. Abbiamo installato i giochi con cui faremo il benchmark della TITAN RTX su un HDD Western Digital HDD da 2 TB e abbiamo testato il nostro sistema su un monitor Acer Predator XB321HK 4K.

Vorremmo ringraziare AMD per averci gentilmente fornito il nostro sistema di test.

Purtroppo, al momento della nostra recensione, non abbiamo avuto l'opportunità di testare anche la TITAN RTX su un sistema basato su Intel. Dobbiamo anche ricordare che abbiamo scelto la Ryzen 7 2700X al posto della Threadripper 2920X in quanto la prima ha dato risultati leggermente migliori se abbinata alla TITAN RTX rispetto alla seconda. Si prega di tenere presente che la CPU spesso ostacolava il nostro sistema di test quando si giocava a 1080p o meno. Ci si dovrebbe anche aspettare che una CPU Intel Core-ix di 9a generazione paragonabile alla CPU Intel Core-ix superi le sue controparti AMD grazie alle maggiori istruzioni per ciclo (IPC) della prima.

Synthetic Benchmarks

Per questa sezione ci siamo affidati principalmente ai benchmark 3DMark. La TITAN RTX e la Ryzen 7 2700X hanno spazzato via i nostri sistemi di test di confronto, con la GPU Turing che ha finito con il 35% in più della RTX 2080 e il 25% in più della TITAN X in Fire Strike Ultra Graphics a 4K. Occorre tenere a mente che non abbiamo potuto includere una RTX 2080 Ti nelle nostre tabelle di confronto al momento della pubblicazione, il che potrebbe aver dato alla TITAN RTX più di una marcia per il suo prezzo rispetto alle nostre altre GPU di confronto.

È interessante notare che la TITAN RTX ha perso il suo vantaggio rispetto alle altre GPU NVIDIA quando abbiamo eseguito Cloud Gate a 1.280x720 e abbiamo ottenuto solo l'11% in più della RTX 2070. Pertanto, consigliamo di giocare a oltre 1080p se volete ottenere il massimo dalla vostra TITAN RTX. Inoltre, la nostra GPU di prova ha superato completamente la AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 in 3DMark, ottenendo il 59% in più in Fire Strike Ultra Graphics a 4K, nonostante sia abbinata alla stessa APU Ryzen 7 2700X.

Sebbene NVIDIA non commercializzi esplicitamente la TITAN RTX come GPU gaming a causa del suo costo esorbitante, essa offre comunque prestazioni di gioco ai vertici della categoria. La TITAN RTX ha gestito tutti i giochi che gli abbiamo lanciato con facilità ed è abbastanza potente da poter giocare anche i più complessi titoli tripla A in 4K con grafica elevata. Alcuni giochi come "Kingdom Come: Deliverance" es "Assassin’s Creed Odyssey" hanno una media inferiore a 60 FPS in queste impostazioni, ma solo marginalmente.La TITAN RTX ha generalmente finito circa il 30% davanti alla GeForce RTX 2080 nei nostri test di gioco, con la Radeon RX Vega 64 ancora di più nella scia della TITAN RTX. Ci aspettiamo che la GeForce RTX 2080 Ti finisca seconda, molto vicina alla TITAN RTX, anche se in alcuni giochi potrebbe eclissarsi a causa della sua maggiore velocità di clock.

Abbiamo anche sottoposto la TITAN RTX a un test di 10 minuti "The Witcher 3" che abbiamo eseguito su una grafica ultra. Prevedibilmente, la GPU ha gestito il gioco senza problemi e ha avuto una media di 129 FPS, con frame rate che sono scesi a un minimo di 124 FPS.

Nel complesso, la TITAN RTX offre prestazioni eccezionali nei giochi, anche se resta da vedere che effetto avrà il suo supporto Raytracing e DLSS rispetto ad altre GPU, anche se la sua influenza sulle prestazioni dei giochi in futuro rimane da vedere. Attualmente pochi giochi supportano queste tecnologie. "Battlefield V" è un gioco che supporta Raytracing e DLSS e anche se la TITAN RTX può gestire il gioco in 4K con DXR impostato ad alta risoluzione a 1440p ha portato ad un'esperienza di gioco più fluida. In definitiva, i miglioramenti visivi hanno un costo enorme in termini di prestazioni in questo momento, che abbiamo sperimentato anche in "Shadow of the Tomb Raider".

NVIDIA Asteroids Demo

NVIDIA ha anche sviluppato la demo Asteroids per dimostrare la potenza delle sue GPU Turing. La demo è attualmente giocabile solo su GPU NVIDIA RTX e dispone di 350.000 asteroidi tra i quali si vola su un'astronave. La TITAN RTX ha una media di circa 50 FPS con il livello di dettaglio impostato su dinamico a 2160p, ma i framerate non scendono sotto i 40 FPS. Abbiamo incluso un breve video del benchmark sottostante per mostrare come si comporta la TITAN RTX.

Prestazioni con le applicazioni

La TITAN RTX si è classificata al top dei benchmark LuxMark, in cui ha superato la RTX 2080 di almeno il 36% e un enorme 55% in più della TITAN X. La TITAN RTX ha un notevole vantaggio prestazionale anche nei benchmark di ComputeMark, anche se il suo vantaggio è stato ridotto al 15% nel benchmark Mandel Vector.

Applicazioni Professionali

La TITAN RTX sembra essere adatta anche come GPU per workstation, considerata la sua potenza. Sfortunatamente, NVIDIA non certifica i driver GeForce delle GPU per applicazioni professionali, il che pone la TITAN RTX in una posizione di svantaggio rispetto alle attuali GPU Quadro. La TITAN RTX si è comportata bene nei benchmark SPECviewperf anche se confrontata con la Quadro M5000M e ha superato il suo predecessore, la TITAN X. Le GeForce RTX 2080 e RTX 2070 sono generalmente alla pari con la Radeon RX Vega 64 in questi benchmark, anche se talvolta superano la TITAN RTX.

Tuttavia, la TITAN RTX non sarà compatibile con le GPU della serie Quadro RTX, che utilizzano anche un chip TU102 e sono equipaggiate con un massimo di 24 GB di VRAM. La TITAN RTX costa circa quanto la Quadro RTX 5000, che attualmente è possibile preordinare da NVIDIA per 2.300 dollari. Si tratta di un affare rispetto alla Quadro RTX 6000, che NVIDIA vende per 6.300 dollari.

NVIDIA ha svolto un eccellente lavoro di riprogettazione del dissipatore della TITAN RTX. La nostra GPU è più silenziosa quando il sistema di test è al minimo rispetto al resto dei componenti, mentre le ventole girano moderatamente quando spingiamo la scheda con forza. In breve, l'esperienza delle ventole è completamente diversa da quella della TITAN X. Le due ventole assiali non solo sono molto più silenziose della singola ventola radiale della TITAN X, ma sono anche più efficaci

La TITAN RTX mantiene anche la sua velocità di clock di base di 1.770 MHz senza strozzature termiche; è trattenuta solo dal suo target di potenza. La TITAN RTX soffre di coil whine  come quasi tutte le moderne schede grafiche, che si sente quando i giochi sono in esecuzione a 200 FPS e oltre. Inoltre, il coil whine diventa più forte con l'aumento del frame rate. Fortunatamente, attivando G-Sync o V-Sync si riduce in qualche modo l'intensità del rumore.

Abbiamo anche sottoposto la TITAN RTX ad uno stress test, durante il quale le temperature interne della GPU hanno raggiunto un massimo di 78 °C (~172 °F). Va notato che la scheda inizia ad avere throttling termico fino a 89 °C (~192 °F) per evitare che si surriscaldi. La nostra GPU di prova ha avuto una media di circa 1.800 MHz durante un test da sforzo FurMark, che è superiore alla velocità di boost clock dichiarata da NVIDIA. Inoltre le due ventole hanno una velocità di rotazione di soli 2.200 RPM, e tale è l'efficacia del raffreddamento della TITAN RTX. 2.200 RPM rappresentano circa il 59% della velocità della ventola, per riferimento.

L'aumento dell'obiettivo di potenza al 114% ha fatto salire la velocità di clock a 1.860 MHz, anche se le temperature interne sono aumentate di altri 4 °C (~8 °F) a 82 °C (~180 °F). Il target di potenza aggiuntiva del 14% fa sì che il consumo energetico raggiunga i 320 W solo per la GPU. L'aumento del consumo energetico è di circa 40 W, o circa il 15%, superiore al consumo a livello di stock.

Il nostro sistema di test ha consumato un minimo di 432 W durante la riproduzione di "The Witcher 3" a 1.920x1.080, che ha raggiunto il picco di 452 W. Si prega di tenere presente che abbiamo misurato questo direttamente dalla presa e non include quanta potenza consuma anche il nostro monitor di test.

La NVIDIA TITAN RTX è attualmente la scheda grafica più veloce che il denaro possa comprare. Tuttavia, è necessario giocare in almeno 2160p e alta grafica per sfruttare il suo potenziale. La TITAN RTX semplicemente non vale i soldi se si gioca solo a 1080p. La TITAN RTX sarà disponibile solo da NVIDIA, quindi non sarà possibile acquistare una scheda più economica o overclocked di terze parti. Al contrario, ci sono già delle GPU RTX 2080 Ti di terze parti che possono consumare fino a 380 W e che superano le prestazioni di TITAN RTX. Inoltre, la nuova GPU TITAN di NVIDIA attualmente costa circa il doppio di una TITAN X, il che mette in prospettiva il miglioramento delle sue prestazioni.

    La NVIDIA TITAN RTX è la GPU per ottenere il meglio che il denaro può comprare. Tuttavia, non può superare una RTX 2080 Ti molto più economica e overcloccata, nonostante il costo di diverse centinaia di dollari in più.

La TITAN RTX ha l'aspetto e le prestazioni di una GPU premium, mentre la sua nuova soluzione di raffreddamento è silenziosa. Tuttavia, non è la prima della nostra lista di GPU che raccomandiamo ai giocatori. Il TITAN RTX è troppo costosa e non si distingue dall'RTX 2080 Ti.
