Recensione della CPU Desktop AMD Ryzen 7 3700X: un frugale processore 8 cores e 16 threads

Otto cores ma economica! AMD ha continuamente migliorato e ottimizzato la sua architettura Zen dal suo lancio inaugurale nel 2017, con l'azienda che ha appena rilasciato la sua terza generazione in altrettanti anni. AMD produce i suoi processori Zen 2 sul moderno processo a 7 nm, che offre, tra gli altri miglioramenti, un IPC superiore a Zen+. La serie Ryzen 3000 introduce molte innovazioni nel mercato delle CPU desktop. Abbiamo già visto componenti desktop da 7 nm con le GPU Navi dell'azienda, ma la serie Ryzen 3000 presenta i primi processori di classe desktop ad essere prodotti su un processo FinFET da 7 nm. Inoltre, sono anche i primi a supportare PCI Express 4.0, qualcosa che utilizzano anche le GPU Navi.

AMD ha anche rinunciato a una iGPU, con la CPU e gli stampi I/O ora alloggiati separatamente sotto il dissipatore di calore. Questo cosiddetto chiplet design rende più facile scalare i cores della CPU, con AMD che ha già annunciato un processore Zen 2 a 16 core, il Ryzen 9 3950X. Quest'ultimo ha due clusters CCD dotati ciascuno di due moduli CCX, anche se AMD ha optato per un cluster CCD e due moduli CCX per il Ryzen 7 3700X. Il processore Zen 2 supporta anche il multithreading simultaneo (SMT), il che significa che può eseguire fino a 16 threads contemporaneamente.

I nuovi moduli CCX, che contengono unità aritmetiche, sono prodotti con il metodo a 7 nm, ma AMD utilizza un processo a 12 nm per lo stampo I/O. L'azienda sostiene che la riduzione dello stampo I/O a 7 nm non avrebbe prodotto vantaggi materiali oltre i 12 nm, anche se attualmente non c'è modo di verificare se ciò sia vero. Abbiamo già visto processi a 12 nm con l'architettura Zen+.

AMD ha migliorato non solo il volume della cache con la nuova serie Ryzen, ma anche la velocità di funzionamento. L'azienda ha fatto un passo simile anche tra le generazioni Zen e Zen+. Fortunatamente, una nuova architettura non richiede l'acquisto di una nuova scheda madre, con un aggiornamento del BIOS per tutti i chipset X470 e B450 che li rende compatibili con la serie Ryzen 3000. Anche le schede X370 e B350 sono parzialmente supportate, anche se si consiglia di verificare se la scheda madre funziona con Zen 2 prima di acquistare una nuova CPU.

Purtroppo, il PCIe 4.0 completo è attualmente limitato al nuovo chipset X570. Mentre alcuni OEM offrono il supporto PCIe 4.0 per schede madri più vecchie, questo vale solo per le corsie collegate direttamente alla CPU. Solo l'X570 può fornire SSD M.2 su PCIe 4.0.

AMD consiglia di utilizzare la RAM DDR4-3733 CL17 con processori Zen 2. DDR4-3600 CL16 offre un miglior rapporto qualità-prezzo, ma DDR4-3733 CL17 consente a Infinity Fabric (IF) di funzionare in sincronia con la RAM, con la conseguenza di ottenere le più basse velocità di latenza possibili. Tuttavia, come illustra il grafico a destra, l'utilizzo di forze RAM IF con clock più elevati per funzionare in modalità 2:1, piuttosto che 1:1 come fa con il 3733 C17, che aumenta le velocità di latenza.

Benchmarks Processore

Il Ryzen 7 3700X mostra il suo lato migliore nei benchmarks multithreaded, dove riesce persino a superare di poco il Intel Core i9-9900K. Non è un'impresa facile neanche nei compiti single-core, e mentre AMD ha colmato il divario con Intel, la differenza rimane rispetto al gaming. In particolare, il Ryzen 7 3700X offre prestazioni single-core migliori di circa il 20% rispetto al Ryzen 7 2700X. La nostra unità di prova ha ottenuto il 15% in più nel CB R15 Single 64Bit rispetto al Threadripper 2920X, anche se quest'ultimo ha il vantaggio nelle attività multi-core grazie ai suoi quattro cores aggiuntivi.

AMD include un radiatore Wraith Prism nella confezione, lo stesso incluso con il Ryzen 7 2700X. Il Wraith Prism ha raffreddato efficacemente la nostra unità di prova durante il nostro CB R15 Multi 64Bit loop, con il nostro sistema di test che termina a circa 10 punti di distanza dal suo punteggio originale. I punteggi hanno oscillato tra i 2.056 e i 2.091 punti durante il nostro ciclo, ma questo non è eccessivamente preoccupante. Il Ryzen 7 3700X ha ottenuto una media di 2.075 punti, che è meno di 20 punti dal suo miglior punteggio di 2.092. Per inciso, il processore ha ottenuto quasi 300 punti in più del suo predecessore, un miglioramento di circa il 16%.

Prestazioni con le applicazioni

Il nostro sistema Ryzen 7 3700X ha funzionato senza intoppi durante i nostri test, senza lunghi tempi di caricamento o rallentamenti del sistema. Avevamo anche un SSD veloce a portata di mano, così abbiamo deciso di vedere se PCIe 4.0 offriva velocità di trasferimento migliori rispetto al suo predecessore di larghezza di banda più stretta. L'unità SSD Corsair da 2 TB Corsair che abbiamo utilizzato è comunque un'unità veloce, ma PCIe 4.0 ha aiutato a raggiungere 69 MB/s di velocità di lettura 4K, che è eccezionalmente veloce. Questo dovrebbe aiutare il sistema a caricare file di piccole dimensioni in modo rapido, riducendo i tempi di caricamento del sistema operativo e nel gioco.

Ci si chiede se la maggior parte delle persone noterebbe la differenza tra PCIe 3.0 e PCIe 4.0 nell'uso quotidiano. Quest'ultimo migliorerà significativamente la velocità di lettura e scrittura sequenziale grazie alla sua larghezza di banda raddoppiata, ma i risultati sono trascurabili nella pratica.

Il Ryzen 7 3700X si è comportato bene anche in PCMark, con un punteggio alla pari con il Core i7-9700K. Il Core i9-9900K è lo standard rispetto al quale sono attualmente misurate tutte le altre CPU, con il Ryzen 7 3700X nella sua scia. AMD ha colmato il divario con Intel rispetto a quello che accadeva con il Ryzen 7 2700X.

I processori AMD ora, come quelli sviluppati da Intel, superano la loro potenza termica di progettazione dichiarata (TDP). Il Ryzen 7 3700X ha un TDP da 65 W, anche se può raggiungere gli 88 W. Abbiamo registrato un consumo massimo di potenza di 86,6 W durante il nostro stress test, ma la nostra unità di prova non è stata in grado di mantenerlo costantemente.

Allo stesso modo, il nostro sistema di prova ha consumato circa 170 W durante la prova da sforzo, anche se questo valore non tiene conto di quanto il nostro monitor di prova assorbiva dalla rete elettrica. Al contrario, il nostro sistema di test Ryzen 7 2700X ha raggiunto i 211 W nello stesso test, con AMD che specifica che il processore ha un TDP da 105 Watt. Vale la pena di ricordare che non tutti i chipset X570 consumeranno tanto quanto l'MSI MEG X570 Godlike, che ha diversi gadget che necessitano di alimentazione, come un display e l'illuminazione RGB. Tuttavia, l'X570 generalmente consuma più dell'X470, ed è per questo che gli OEM sono tornati a includere le ventole impopolari dei chipset proprietari. Quello della scheda Godlike non è iniziato durante i nostri test, però, per esempio.

Abbiamo anche preso in considerazione il consumo energetico durante il gioco, anche se questo dipende in larga misura dalla GPU utilizzata. Il desing di riferimento della Radeon RX Vega 64 ha un TDP da 295 W, che ha portato il nostro sistema di test a consumare 378 W durante il gioco. Il nostro sistema di test Ryzen 7 3700X è più efficiente di tutti gli altri sistemi alimentati da AMD nella nostra tabella di confronto, ma consuma poco più di 10 W in più del Core i9-9900K. Tuttavia, il sistema Threadripper 2970WX ha consumato un enorme 441 W durante lo stesso test.

Per inciso, il sistema di raffreddamento Wraith Prism mantiene il Ryzen 7 3700X relativamente fresco. Le temperature interne raggiunto il picco di 74 °C durante la nostra prova da sforzo in una configurazione di prova aperta. Tuttavia, le temperature el core aumenteranno in una configurazione chiusa, pertanto si consiglia di utilizzare un AIO 240 o 280 se si prevede di overclockare il Ryzen 7 3700X in un tipico case PC.

Overclocking

Abbiamo anche provato l'overclocking della Ryzen 7 3700X, ma con un successo limitato. In breve, avrete bisogno di un sistema di raffreddamento a liquido per overclockare la CPU, dato che il nostro sistema di raffreddamento ad aria non era all'altezza della situazione. Siamo riusciti a far funzionare stabilmente la nostra unità di prova a 4,25 GHz su tutti i cores, ma solo con PBO disabilitato, il che ha un impatto sulle prestazioni del singolo core. Il Ryzen 7 3700X può raggiungere i 4,4 GHz su un core per impostazione predefinita, quindi l'overclocking è piuttosto infruttuoso a questo proposito.
L'overclock ha aumentato di 100 punti il punteggio CB R15 Multi 64Bit del nostro sistema di test. Tuttavia, questo è avvenuto al costo di 10 W di aumento del consumo energetico durante i nostri test. Quindi, anche se è probabile che si otterranno overclock più elevati con una soluzione di raffreddamento migliore, raccomandiamo di utilizzare il Ryzen 7 3700X solo temporaneamente a velocità overclockate per ridurre al minimo il rischio di danneggiare la CPU.

AMD ha messo molta pressione su Intel con il rilascio della famiglia Ryzen 3000. L'azienda ha fatto bene molte cose, mentre la rivitalizzata concorrenza nel mercato delle CPU desktop dovrebbe essere musica per le orecchie della gente. La Ryzen 7 3700X è venduta al dettaglio per 349 euro (~US$390), un prezzo che attualmente lo pone a confronto con il Core i7-9700K. Il chip Zen 2 non solo offre eccellenti prestazioni multi-core, ma prospera anche in compiti single-core, ottenendo solo 4 punti in meno del Core i7-9700K in CB R15 Single 64Bit. La Ryzen 7 3700X supporta anche PCIe 4.0, che può combinarsi con le nuove GPU Navi per ottenere un fantastico rapporto qualità-prezzo ma per il raccolto attuale di costose schede madri X570. La Ryzen 7 3700X e i suoi fratelli Zen 2 possono funzionare anche su schede più vecchie, ma rinuncerete ad alcuni dei miglioramenti di velocità che la PCIe 4.0 porta con sé. Tuttavia, una scheda X570 è attualmente l'unico modo per garantire che la Ryzen 7 3700X rimanga a prova di futuro.

    L'AMD Ryzen 7 3700X ha un ottimo rapporto qualità-prezzo, con prestazioni che si abbinano perfettamente. La Zen 2 è ancora dietro Intel in alcune attività single-core, ma AMD ha fatto un ottimo lavoro per rendere minimo quel gap di prestazioni.

Indubbiamente, il Ryzen 7 3700X offre prestazioni multi-core migliori di tutti i moderni chip Intel, con prestazioni addirittura superiori a quelle del Core i9-9900K. Vale la pena tenere a mente i chip Ryzen 9 3900X e Ryzen 9 3950X se state pensando di acquistare una CPU Zen 2, però. Questi processori avranno rispettivamente 12 e 16 cores, con le loro prestazioni multi-core migliorate che li rendono più adatti a giocatori, streamer e creatori di contenuti rispetto al Ryzen 7 3700X.

Nel complesso, le CPU Intel paragonabili hanno il vantaggio nei single-core rispetto al Ryzen 7 3700X, nonostante AMD abbia colmato il divario con Zen 2. La nostra unità di prova ha impressionato nei giochi, con il processore che gestisce bene anche il consumo energetico durante i nostri test. In breve, AMD ha fatto grandi passi avanti con la sua architettura Zen 2, e il Ryzen 7 3700X ha colmato il gap di prestazioni single core rispetto ai processori Intel come il Core i7-9700K.
