Intel 2540M

L'Intel Core i7-2540M è un veloce processore dual core di fascia alta al momento della sua introduzione Q1 2011. Si basa sulla architettura Sandy Bridge ed offre l'Hyperthreading per la gestione di 4 threads contemporaneamente (per un miglior utilizzo della pipeline). Rispetto alle più veloci Core i7, la i5 ha meno level cache di 3MB. La velocità clock base è di 2.6 GHz ma grazie al Turbo Boost raggiunge i 3.1 GHz (2 cores attivi) e 3.3 GHz (1 core attivo).

Sandy Bridge è il successore evolutivo della architettura Arrandale. I principali miglioramenti sono le nuove istruzioni 265Bit AVX, il migliorato Turbo 2.0 e l'integrazione della scheda grafica nel core CPU da 32nm.

L'i5-2540M offre una scheda grafica integrata (Intel HD Graphics 3000) che si è mostrata nettamente più veloce rispetto alle vecchie Intel HD Graphics delle CPUs Arrandale. Poiché la nuova GPU è inclusa nella CPU, anche questa è realizzata in 32nm e condivide la veloce level 3 cache coi i cores della CPU (utilizzando un nuovo ring bus). Nella 2540M il clock varia da 650-1300MHz (Turbo Boost).

Inoltre, è incluso un controller di memoria dual-channel DDR3 migliorato sulla die della CPU che è usato dalla CPU e dalla GPU.

Grazie ai miglioramenti dell'architettura ed al nuovo Turbo Boost 2.0, le prestazioni medie del Core i7-2540M sono superiori rispetto a le Arrandale Core i7 con clock simile. Nei benchmarks sintetici le prestazioni dovrebbero essere al livello della vecchia Core i7-620M e di conseguenza adatte anche per applicazioni impegnative.

I 35W di TDP includono la GPU integrata ed il controller di memoria.
