Intel 520M

L'Intel Core i5-520M è una CPU dual core per portatili con un clock (grazie al Turbo Mode) da 2.4 a 2.93 GHz. Ogni core è basato sulla micro architettura Nehalem (Westemere). L'Hyperthreading consente alla CPU Dual Core di gestire 4 threads contemporaneamente (per un miglior utilizzo della pipeline). Rispetto alle più veloci Core i7-620M, la 520M ha solo 3 MB di Level 3 Cache ed una velocità clock inferiore (CPU e GPU).

Una feature della nuova Core i5-520M è la scheda grafica integrata chiamata Intel HD Graphics (GMA HD) ed il controller di memoria. Entrambi sono su una die separata realizzata sempre in 45nm mentre la CPU è già realizzata con il nuovo processo da 32nm.

Le prestazioni della i5 520M sono in media più veloci rispetto ad un Core 2 Duo T9500 e grazie al Turbo Boost, le applicazioni single threaded girano anche meglio. Di conseguenza, il Core i5-520M è veloce quanto le veloci CPUs Core 2 Duo con clock elevati e dovrebbe gestire la maggior parte dei giochi e delle applicazioni multimedia.

Il CPU cores 32nm della generazione Westmere può processare anche alcune istruzioni nuove per accelerare le encryptions AES.

La scheda grafica integrata Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD (GMA HD) è nota per avere un clock fino a 500-766 MHz e dovrebbe essere nettamente più veloce rispetto alla vecchia GMA 4500MHD. Una GeForce 9400M (ION) dovrebbe essere ancora più veloce (specialmente considerando che le schede Nvidia ed ATI hanno un miglior supporto driver rispetto ad Intel sino ad oggi). Stando ai rumors, il core GMA userà anche il Turbo Mode per regolare la velocità clock.

Il consumo di energia di 35 Watt TDP (max.) vale per tutto il pacchetto ed è di conseguenza migliore rispetto ai 35 Watt di TDP della serie Core 2 Duo T (solo CPU). Grazie al Turbo Boost, il Core i5 molto probabilmente userà tutto il TDP sotto carico rispetto alle vecche CPUs Core 2 Duo. Senza carico, l'i5 utilizza molta meno energia.
