Intel 580M

L'Intel Core i5-580M è una CPU dual core di fascia alta per portatili ed ha un clock (grazie al Turbo Mode) da 2.66 a 3.33 GHz. Ogni core si basa sulla micro architettura Nehalem (Westemere). L'Hyperthreading consenta alla CPU Dual Core di gestire 4 threads contemporaneamente (per un miglior utilizzo della pipeline). Rispetto al Core i7-620M, il 580M ha solo 3 MB di Level 3 Cache.

Una feature del nuovo Core i5-580M è la scheda grafica integrata chiamata GMA HD ed il controller di memoria per DDR3-800/1066. Entrambi sono su una die separata che è sempre realizzata in 45nm mentre la die della CPU è realizzata con il nuovo processo a 32nm.

Le prestazioni del Core i5-580M dovrebbero essere leggermente superiori al Core i7-620M e di conseguenza parliamo della seconda CPU dual core per portatili del 2010. Rispetto ai vecchi modelli Core 2 Duo, la i5-580M dovrebbe essere più veloce di un T9900. Pertanto, il Core i5-580M è una cpu dual core di fascia alta che dovrebbe gestire tutte le applicazioni quotidiane ed i giochi. Solo le CPUs quad core i7 riescono ad essere molto più veloci con applicazioni che richiedono quattro o più threads (es. rendering).


I cores della cpu da 32nm della generazione Westmere possono anche processare alcune nuove istruzioni per accelerare la codifica AES.

La scheda grafica integrata Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD (GMA HD) ha un clock da 500-766 MHz ed ha prestazioni nettamente superiori rispetto alla vecchia GMA 4500MHD. Una GeForce 9400M (ION) dovrebbe essere comunque più veloce (specialmente in quanto le schede Nvidia ed ATI hanno un miglior supporto driver rispetto ad Intel sino ad oggi). Stando ai rumors, il core GMA utilizzerà anche il Turbo Mode per regolare la velocità clock.

Il consumo di energia di 35 Watt TDP (max.) comprende tutto il pacchetto e di conseguenza è sicuramente meglio rispetto ai 35 Watt TDP della serie Core 2 Duo T- (solo CPU). Grazie al the Turbo Boost, il Core i5 probabilmente utilizzerà tutto il TDP da 35 Watt sotto carico e di conseguenza assorbirà più energia rispetto alle Core 2 Duo con caratteristiche simili. In modalità Idle, la i5 utilizza nettamente meno energia rispetto alle CPUs Core 2 Duo.
