Intel 460M

L'Intel Core i5-460M è una CPU dual core di fascia alta per portatili ed ha un clock (grazie al Turbo Mode) da 2.53 a 2.8 GHz. Ogni core si basa sulla micro architettura Nehalem (Westemere). L'hyperthreading consente alla CPU Dual Core di gestire 4 threads contemporaneamente (per un miglior utilizzo della pipeline). Rispetto al Core i5-540M, il 460M non supporta l'AES, la  VT-d e le funzioni Trusted Execution ed utilizza un Turbo Boost più lento (2.8 invece di 3.06 GHz).

Una feature del nuovo Core i5-460M è la scheda grafica integrata chiamata GMA HD ed il controller di memoria. Entrambi sono su un die separato realizzato in 45nm mentre il die della CPU è già realizzato con il nuovo processo 32nm.

Le prestazioni del Core i5-460M sono in media superiori rispetto ad un Core 2 Duo T9800 da 2.8 GHz ed in alcuni benchmarks anche superiori rispetto al più veloce Core 2 Duo T9900 (es. punteggio CPU 3DMark 06). Pertanto, il Core i5-460M è da considerare come una CPU dual core di fascia elevata in grado di gestire lavoro quotidiano e giochi. Solo le CPUs i7 quad core possono essere notevolmente più veloci con le applicazioni che richiedono quattro o più threads (es. rendering).

I cores CPU da 32nm della generazione Westmere possono anche processare alcune nuove istruzioni per accelerare la codifica AES.

La scheda grafica integrata Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD (GMA HD) è nota per avere un clock fino a 500-766 MHz e dovrebbe essere nettamente più veloce rispetto alla vecchia GMA 4500MHD. Una GeForce 9400M (ION) dovrebbe comunque restare più veloce (specialmente considerando che le schede Nvidia ed ATI hanno un migliore supporto driver rispetto all'Intel sino ad oggi). Stando ai rumors, il core della GMA utilizzerà anche il Turbo Mode per regolare la velocità clock.

Il consumo energetico di 35 Watt di TDP (max.) vale per l'intero pacchetto e di conseguenza è nettamente migliore rispetto ai 35 Watt di TDP della serie Core 2 Duo T (solo CPU). Grazie al Turbo Boost, il Core i5 probabilmente utilizzerà tutto il TDP di 35 Watt sotto carico e di conseguenza utilizzerà più energia rispetto alle Core 2 Duo con specifiche simili. In modalità Idle, l'i5 utilizza sicuramente meno energia rispetto alle CPUs Core 2 Duo.
