Apple A7

L'Apple A7 è un SoC ARM high-end lanciato nel settembre 2013 unitamente all'iPhone 5S. Il chip si trova anche nell'iPad Air. E' uno dei primi SoC ARM ad implementare l'ARMv8 ISA 64-bit. I due cores CPU hanno un clock da 1.3 GHz (iPad Air: 1.4 GHz) e si basano sull'architettura Apple Cyclone. Inoltre, il chip integra  anche una GPU PowerVR Series 6 (Rogue) G6430 ed un controller di memoria 2x 32-bit LPDDR3.

Architettura

La Cyclone è il successore dell'architettura Swift, che è stata usata nella precedente generazione di SoCs Apple A6/A6X (iPhone 5/iPad 4). L'architettura è inevitabilmente ancora un design out-of-order superscalare, ma con significative revisioni. Oltre al nuovo ISA ARMv8, il chip offre varie estensioni di crittografia (AES, SHA), registri più ampi e migliori istruzioni SIMD. Unitamente con molti altri miglioramenti come una maggiore L1 caches ed altre ottimizzazioni, le prestazioni per clock sono state incrementate di circa il 50 percento. E' possibile notare anche un ulteriore vantaggio che si rileva utilizzando software 64-bit.

Prestazioni

Nonostante la bassa velocità clock ed appena due cores CPU, l'Apple A7 compete con i SoCs ARM high-end come il Qualcomm Snapdragon 800. Nei software con scarsa parallelizzazione come i browser benchmarks, l'A7 riesce a superare l'intera concorrenza ARM ed essere alla pari con l'AMD A4-5000 o l'Intel Atom Z3770.

Grafica

Il SoC integra una GPU PowerVR Series 6 (Rogue) G6430 con 4 clusters. La G6430 offre più del doppio di potenza di calcolo rispetto all'SGX543MP3 dell'Apple A6 e supporta OpenGL ES 3.0 per la prima volta. Il clock rate esatto ancora non è stato determinato, ma è probabilmente intorno ai 400 MHz con conseguentemente più di 100 GFLOPS. Nell'iPad Air, la GPU ha un clock leggermente più elevato e presumibilmente di circa 450 MHz. Rispetto al altre soluzioni grafiche mobile, la G6430 ha prestazioni simil i alla versione tablet dello Snapdragon 800 / Adreno 330 ed è una delle GPUs più veloci nella sua classe. Pertanto, anche i giochi iOS più pesanti del 2013 gireranno in modo fluido.

Consumo energetico

L'A7 la si trova nell'Apple iPhone 5S, che offre una autonomia della batteria molto estesa nonostante la capacità della batteria stessa sia relativamente limitata. Il chip è prodotto in a 28nm HKMG (High-K Metal Gate) da Samsung e dovrebbe avere un consumo massimo di energia stimato in meno di 2 - 3 W. Nell'iPad Air, il SoC dovrebbe avere un TDP leggermente superiore a causa dei clock rates più elevati e meno throttling.
