Imagination PowerVR GX6450

La Imagination Technologies PowerVR GX6450 è una veloce soluzione grafica mobile per smartphones e tablets, che si trova nei Socs ARM come l'Apple A8X (iPhone 6 e iPhone 6 Plus). Il chip è disponibile a partire dal terzo trimestre 2014 ed è una delle soluzioni più veloci nella sua classe al momento del lancio.

Architettura e Performance

La GPU su basa sulla architettura PowerVR Series 6XT (Rogue) Unified Shader ed integra quattro clusters con due TMUs e 32 FP32-ALUs ciascuno. Pertanto, le prestazioni teoriche FP32 (full precision) per clock sono identiche alla precedente G6430 (sempre 4 clusters) che si trova sull'Apple A7. Grazie alle aggiuntive ALUs FP16, tuttavia, le prestazioni FP16 sono migliorate nettamente.

Nell'iPhone 6, la GPU dovrebbe avere un clock di circa 450 MHz, con circa 115 GLOPS (FP32). Rispetto alle altre soluzioni grafiche mobile, la GX6450 supera la Qualcomm Adreno 330 (Snapdragon 800/801) ed è al livello della più recente Adreno 420 (Snapdragon 805). Ad eccezione dell'assetato chip Nvidia Tegra K1 ed il cugino maggiore GX6650, la GX6450 è una delle GPUs mobile più veloci della fine 2014. Anche i giochi più recenti ed i displays con risoluzione elevata sono gestiti senza problemi. Tra l'altro, la GPU supporta OpenGL 3.x/4.x, OpenGL ES 3.0 ma anche DirectX 10.

Consumo Energetico

Grazie all'avanzato processo di produzione in 20 nanometri ed il clock rate relativamente basso, l'implementazione della GX6450 nell'Apple A8 offre una eccellente efficienza energetica. D'altro canto, la GPU ha una architettura relativamente "ampia" che richiede molti transistors ed una dimensione più grande (19 mm² in 20 nm).
