Intel Z2460

L'Intel Atom Z2460 è un SoC (System on a Chip) con nome in codice Penwell e fa parte della piattaforma Medfield. La Z2460 è un chip SoC ed integra un processore single core Atom (Saltwell) con clock da 1.3 - 1.6 GHz. Grazie all'Hyper-Threading possono essere eseguiti due threads su un single core (per migliorare l'efficienza).

Il CPU core Saltwell è ancora molto simile ai primi Intel Atom. Pertanto, le prestazioni per clock dovrebbero somigliare molto (solo su applicazioni limitate). Tuttavia, la CPU ora sfrutta ulteriori 256 KB Level 2 cache (su un piano di voltaggio separato) per consentire alla CPU ed alla main L2 cache di avere un minor carico energetico. Inoltre, l'Atom ora supporta una sorta di Turbo Boost e riesce ad arrivare fino a 1.6 GHz per brevi periodi (1.3 GHz di frequenza base). Ancora, la CPU core riesce ad effettuare un downclock a 100 MHz (in steps da 100 MHz) per risparmiare energia.

Le prestazioni del processore dovrebbero essere al livello della precedente generazione di processori Atom con clock da 1.3 - 1.6 GHz (i.e., l'Atom Z670 con clock da 1.5 GHz). Altri SoCs smartphone basati su cores ARM dovrebbero essere più lenti secondo Intel. Il Benchmark SunSpider Javascript ed il punteggio BrowserMark ad esempio dovrebbero essere superiori rispetto all'utilizzo di un TI OMAP 4460 (Galaxy Nexus) o Apple A5 (iPhone 4S).

La scheda grafica integrata si basa sul design PowerVR SGX 540 ed ha un clock da 400 MHz. Il decoder video (MPEG4.2, H.264, VC1, WMV) e l'encoder (MPEG4.2, H.264) derivano dalla Imagination Technologies (VDX385 e VDE285) e dovrebbero consentire la de- e codifica di videos 1080p30.

Inoltre, è integrato un controller di memoria dual channel LPDDR2 (2x 32 Bit) per un massimo di 1GB RAM.

Tutta la SoC è stata ottimizzata per essere energeticamente efficiente e ridurre i consumi. E' realizzata con procedimento 32nm LP (low power). A 100 MHz la SoC dovrebbe consumare circa 50 mW ed a 1.6 GHz circa 750 mW. Di conseguenza, la Z2460 è adatta anche per smartphones ed Intel sembra puntare ad avere un consumo energetico medio molto buono in confronto ai concorrenti come l'iPhone 4S.
