Sony Xperia 10 è uno smartphone di fascia media con un prezzo di circa 270€ scontato che sarebbe il suo reale valore, anche perchè il prezzo di lancio 350€ mi sembrava un po’ troppo alto per ciò che offre; ho apprezzato molto il tentativo di Sony di introdurre una novità nel formato del display osando dove altri si sono fermati. Consigliato per chi cerca un medio gamma con un prezzo non troppo elevato, al prezzo che ho scritto in apertura ovviamente.

Tricky one this. There’s no denying it, this is an excellent phone when it comes to the cameras, the screen and the GUI. It’s a different form-factor, that’s for sure, but I’m not going to berate them too much for that as there’ll definitely be lots of you out there who will love the tall and almost remote-control-like appearance of this device. However, what I will say is that, in this world of “all screen” phone frontages and multiple use cases, it’s a hard sell for Sony to say, “We’re doing this complete letterbox design because that’s how movies are formatted”. Sure, movies look great on the phone and there’s no black bars, but what about for the rest of the time, when your thumb doesn’t reach high enough and you have to employ one of those work-arounds that Sony has put in place to let you use the phone with one-hand?

For a mid-range device, both the Sony Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus are interesting choices. The 21:9 aspect ratio makes them unique, but I don’t know if it’s enough to make you want to choose these over others in the market. If you were to go with one of these, I’d choose the Xperia 10 Plus over the smaller sibling mainly due to the slightly better specs, larger screen, and better cameras. I really see no reason why the smaller Xperia 10 exists to be honest.

Siamo alle battute finali della recensione di Sony Xperia 10 Plus, proposto a 429 Euro di listino. Si tratta di un buon prodotto, ma che non riesce ad esprimere il massimo delle sue potenzialità a causa di una serie di imperfezioni e scelte poco comprensibili da parte di Sony. Il display 21:9 ci può stare, è interessante e in alcune situazioni si rivela decisamente utile, purtroppo però non basta per far decollare il giudizio su Sony Xperia 10 Plus. La qualità costruttiva che lascia a desiderare, l’autonomia solo sufficiente e un comparto fotografico sottotono, sono il perfetto contorno per una delle più classiche occasioni sprecate, peccato.

Siamo alle battute finali della recensione di Sony Xperia 10 Plus, proposto a 429 Euro di listino. Si tratta di un buon prodotto, ma che non riesce ad esprimere il massimo delle sue potenzialità a causa di una serie di imperfezioni e scelte poco comprensibili da parte di Sony. Il display 21:9 ci può stare, è interessante e in alcune situazioni si rivela decisamente utile, purtroppo però non basta per far decollare il giudizio su Sony Xperia 10 Plus. La qualità costruttiva che lascia a desiderare, l’autonomia solo sufficiente e un comparto fotografico sottotono, sono il perfetto contorno per una delle più classiche occasioni sprecate, peccato.

Nel complesso va bene a parte l'irritante luminosità del display che fa gli scherzi e che pigramente abbiamo lasciato in automatico. Ma è forse il 6,5" più usabile che io abbia mai provato. La lunghezza non da fastidio anche se il design risulta squilibrato. Bene la batteria, bene lo sblocco laterale meno bene la parte di produttività. Ma nell'uso mi è piaciuto anche se rimango perplesso dai 21:9. Fosse stato uguale ma più basso e magari 18:9? Sarebbe stato meno iconico!!In effetti già così tenta di differenziarsi ma a 400 euro la concorrenza è tanta!

Per questi motivi non lo acquisterei e non mi sento di poterlo consigliare, il coraggio a volte non basta e un formato più piccolo risulta d'obbligo visti gli ingombri. Sono consapevole che non mancano gli amanti dei "pezzi forti", degli smartphone più generosi rispetto alla media, e per loro certe limitazioni discusse non sembreranno tali. Apprezzo l'entusiasmo e la forza di spingere qualcosa che si scosti dalla massa, ma il rischio è uno scollamento dalle reali esigenze degli utenti e qualche forzatura di troppo per godere dei 21:9.

It sticks with a 60Hz display, while most phones shift to 90Hz or even 120Hz. There are still some fairly noticeable bezels too, which definitely aren't to everyone's tastes. The cameras are also extremely patchy, with charging speeds out of the box painfully slow. That’s not to say the Xperia 10 III doesn’t get anything right – far from it. Performance is fine and extends to mobile gaming, while battery life is among the best you’ll find anywhere. It still looks and feels like a premium handset, and the simple software experience is enjoyable. But Sony’s cautious spec sheet and comparatively high price tag means the Xperia 10 III needed to nail the basics. It simply doesn’t do that, making the phone hard to recommend.

The Sony Xperia 10 IV showed outstanding autonomy across all our tests. In default mode, it had one of the longest typical usage scenarios we’ve tested to date, and it had one of the best autonomy results in the on-the-go tests, especially when scrolling on social apps. When tested in calibrated mode, the device performed very well, having excellent autonomy whatever the use case. Charging the device’s large 5000 mAh battery to its full capacity lasted 2 hours and 36 minutes because of the small charger. A 5-minute charge boost only yielded an average 3 hours and 24 minutes of autonomy. The charge efficiency was poor, and the residual consumption of the charger when the device was fully charged and still plugged in was above average. But the efficiency of the charger itself was average, and its residual consumption when the device was not plugged in was very low, consuming very little power from the outlet. When it came to discharge efficiency, the Sony Xperia 10 IV drained very low discharge currents across all our use cases, meaning that the device was well-optimized. Compared to devices from the same price range ($400 – $599), the Sony Xperia 10 IV’s global score places it near the top of the segment, while its autonomy score takes the top spot. The device also has among the best scores in efficiency for the segment. But its very low charging score, pulled down by the lowest full-charge subscore we have in our database so far, kept it from doing better in the segment.

The Sony Xperia 10 V offers quite a nice set of features, considering its price. The camera app includes a night mode, auto HDR, and a background blur feature, but it would benefit from additional shooting modes. It feels like Sony are still playing catch up in the mobile phone market, as Apple, Samsung, Google, and others have additional computational shooting modes (such as long exposure). How about the images produced, are they any good? Well, sometimes. In good light, the cameras can product some really good looking images, and colour can be good. At other times, colour is dull. As light levels drop image quality also drops dramatically. There’s also a lack of consistency between shots, in exposure and colour reproduction, so it is often a case of picking the best of several shots to get a good one. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to see why anyone would choose this phone over a Samsung, Google Pixel, or any of the other brands available. There are too many things on this phone that simply aren’t competitive with what’s out there.
