Le CPU Intel ULV stanno migliorando ogni anno, anche se le loro differenze di prestazioni possono essere marginali. La stragrande maggioranza dei computer portatili gaming sul mercato al momento sono dotati di CPU Core serie H da 35 W a 45 W e opzioni grafiche GeForce GTX o RTX. A parte un piccola eccezione, la maggior parte dei produttori non offre opzioni Core U su nessuno dei loro portatili gaming, poiché le prestazioni più lente della CPU possono ostacolare la grafica ad alte prestazioni. Tuttavia, il recente MSI Stealth 15M è il miglior esempio che abbiamo visto finora di una CPU Core U che funziona estremamente bene con una GPU GeForce RTX.

Come dettagliato nella nostra recensione, il sistema MSI è dotato di una CPU ULV Intel Core i7-1185G7 di 11a generazione che è uno dei processori più veloci disponibili nella famiglia Tiger Lake-U. Le prestazioni multi-thread crude sono circa dal 3 al 15% più lente del Core i7-9750H mentre le prestazioni single-thread possono essere fino al 20-30% più veloci. Il Core i7-9750H ha alimentato la maggior parte dei portatili gaming del 2019 e il Core i7-1185G7 è già un collo a collo in termini di prestazioni grezze pur consumando circa la metà della potenza.

Quando si eseguono giochi veri e propri, lo Stealth 15M e la sua GPU GeForce RTX 2060 Max-Q si comportano solo pochi punti percentuali più lentamente del laptop medio GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, anche se la maggior parte di questi sistemi concorrenti è dotata di CPU Core H più esigenti. Non stiamo dicendo che tutti i portatili gaming con GPU GeForce RTX 3070 o 3080 dovrebbero essere dotati di CPU Core U, ma il deficit di prestazioni tra i portatili gaming Core H e i potenziali portatili da gioco Core U sembra essere minore del previsto. La nostra esperienza con l'ultimo Intel NUC equipaggiato con la stessa CPU Core i7-1185G7 ma una GPU GeForce RTX 3080 ancora più potente è un'ulteriore prova che la maggior parte dei giochi sono molto più legati alla GPU che alla CPU al punto che l'ultima CPU Core U può funzionare quasi altrettanto bene in molti casi. Se gli OEM possono progettare portatili gaming più sottili o più silenziosi con CPU Core U, allora il deficit di prestazioni relativamente piccolo potrebbe valere la pena per alcuni giocatori.
