And I truly wish that chip is in the Ally X. Perhaps the battery life could be extended even further too. Now then, I have a dilemma. Since I am already using an ROG Ally, should I upgrade to the Ally X? Is it even considered an upgrade since the performance is the same, but I get a bunch of quality of life improvements on the Ally X? As for the price, the ROG Ally X is at RM4,299 – which is a whole thousand more than the ROG Ally when it was first announced. Given that the Ally has come down in price, it’s not easy to pick between the Ally and the Ally X. Remember – Ally X has a lot of upgrades over the original Ally, but ultimately – you still get the same level of performance at double the battery life and no more annoying fan noise.

The performance it delivers is striking for a device you can hold in your hands, boasting an average 10fps lead over the Steam Deck. But it's not an open-and-shut case. The device has a hard time reaching frame rates high enough to take full advantage of the 120Hz refresh rate. Add to that, certain games like Returnal are unplayable, even with graphics settings dialed down. Additionally, the relatively short battery life is a concern, especially for a device that's designed to offer the convenience of portability over a gaming laptop.

The Asus ROG Ally provides improvements upon the Steam Deck formula in most areas, with the more streamlined nature of Valve’s software being that devices main coup over the Asus. But, it offers a sleeker chassis, a more open operating system as well as faster gaming performance. You will have to fork out around twice the price of the Steam Deck to get this machine though. There’s now key competition at a similar price now too, with the Lenovo Legion Go offering a larger and higher resolution display, as well as the neat trick of detachable controllers. However, the Asus ROG Ally beats it for its first-party software experience, portability and more satisying controls. Performance is impressive given the fact this is a handheld system but, with a typical 10fps improvement on the Steam Deck, it’s not significant enough to be a no-brainer purchase. It’s difficult to hit a high enough frame rate to make the most of the 120Hz refresh rate and some games, such as Returnal, are unplayable even with compromised graphics settings.

La nuova arrivata, Ally X, esce invece a 899 euro che oggettivamente non sono pochi ma che, d’altra parte, ci danno anche garanzie piuttosto solide sulla possibilità di avere l’originale a un prezzo accessibile anche andando avanti nei mesi. Si tratta quindi di scegliere. Se pensate ad Ally come un sistema di gioco secondario, da affiancare al PC di casa o a una console, io forse approfitterei del prezzo vantaggioso a cui la prima iterazione viene venduta. Se invece credete che un sistema del genere, agile e versatile, possa essere il vostro centro d’intrattenimento videoludico principale, Ally X ha tante piccole chicche e migliorie che, seppur non capovolgenti, tutte insieme rendono l’esperienza migliore. I think for anyone who loves gaming and wants an extremely portable way to do so, this is an excellent purchase to make. In my personal opinion, this is the best gaming handheld on the market right now. I find it nearly as comfortable as the Steam Deck, maybe even more so. It runs games with better performance in any of the games I have tested, too. While the overall user interface is better on Steam Deck, this isn’t by a whole lot. I think the big takeaway here is asking yourself if all you’re doing is playing Steam games. If you play games in different clients, I think the ROG Ally X is the clear choice.

In fact, ASUS has dropped the price of the original Ally with the Z1 Extreme CPU down to Rs 40,000. For this reason alone, I would not recommend buying the Ally X if you already own any of the popular AMD Z1 Extreme powered consoles.Rather the Ally X is more suitable for the ones who have been holding back and saving their money for an all-round champion.

In my personal opinion, this is the best gaming handheld on the market right now. I find it nearly as comfortable as the Steam Deck, maybe even more so. It runs games with better performance in any of the games I have tested, too. While the overall user interface is better on Steam Deck, this isn’t by a whole lot. I think the big takeaway here is asking yourself if all you’re doing is playing Steam games. If you play games in different clients, I think the ROG Ally X is the clear choice.

The ROG Ally X was introduced as a minor refresh to the Ally, but it is much better than the original in every possible way. You get double the battery life, a much more comfortable design, and a small performance uplift. For the asking price of Rs 89,990, it is considerably expensive than the Ally or even the Steam Deck. In fact, ASUS has dropped the price of the original Ally with the Z1 Extreme CPU down to Rs 40,000. For this reason alone, I would not recommend buying the Ally X if you already own any of the popular AMD Z1 Extreme powered consoles.Rather the Ally X is more suitable for the ones who have been holding back and saving their money for an all-round champion.

I hate the full Armoury Crate that's on the company's ROG laptops, mostly because it's a hot mess of conflicting places to change settings. SE is designed to run on a smaller screen and is more manageable, though still a bit confusing. In addition to essential features, like control binding for both gamepad and desktop modes and lighting control, it also lets you manually adjust the fan and power settings, change the among of memory dedicated to the iGPU (though I didn't test it) and more. Between the price, the problems inherent in grafting a console-like experience on Windows and the uncertainty of how well any particular game may run on it, especially in a couple of years, it's hard to give anything other than a qualified recommendation for the Ally X.

The Asus ROG Ally X may not boast a new processor or snazzy OLED screen tech, but it fixes practically every complaint that consumers had about the first-gen handheld. It’s more ergonomically shaped with better control placement, offers improved cooling, boosted RAM and storage and, most importantly, a massive improvement in battery life. In fact, I’d argue that the ROG Ally X’s 80Wh battery is the main reason to opt for it over competing handhelds like the ROG Ally, Steam Deck OLED and Lenovo Legion Go, even at a more premium price point. The handheld delivers essentially double what you’d get from the regular Ally, offering around three hours of battery life in AAA games at the highest graphical settings in Performance mode, and over two hours in Turbo mode, with significantly better performance in certain titles. It’s still not going to beat something like the Nintendo Switch OLED, but for a PC gaming-focused handheld, it leads the pack.

I hate the full Armoury Crate that's on the company's ROG laptops, mostly because it's a hot mess of conflicting places to change settings. SE is designed to run on a smaller screen and is more manageable, though still a bit confusing. In addition to essential features, like control binding for both gamepad and desktop modes and lighting control, it also lets you manually adjust the fan and power settings, change the among of memory dedicated to the iGPU (though I didn't test it) and more. Between the price, the problems inherent in grafting a console-like experience on Windows and the uncertainty of how well any particular game may run on it, especially in a couple of years, it's hard to give anything other than a qualified recommendation for the Ally X.

The Asus ROG Ally X may not boast a new processor or snazzy OLED screen tech, but it fixes practically every complaint that consumers had about the first-gen handheld. It’s more ergonomically shaped with better control placement, offers improved cooling, boosted RAM and storage and, most importantly, a massive improvement in battery life. In fact, I’d argue that the ROG Ally X’s 80Wh battery is the main reason to opt for it over competing handhelds like the ROG Ally, Steam Deck OLED and Lenovo Legion Go, even at a more premium price point. The handheld delivers essentially double what you’d get from the regular Ally, offering around three hours of battery life in AAA games at the highest graphical settings in Performance mode, and over two hours in Turbo mode, with significantly better performance in certain titles. It’s still not going to beat something like the Nintendo Switch OLED, but for a PC gaming-focused handheld, it leads the pack.

If you’re new to the whole PC gaming handheld thing, and want to play more than just your Steam library without messing about with Linux, the Asus ROG Ally X is now the obvious choice. It lasts longer than the original, has an easily upgradeable SSD, and more RAM than any Steam Deck. The refined ergonomics also put both the MSI Claw and Lenovo Legion Go in the shade. It’s not perfect: Windows 11 still doesn’t feel entirely happy on a small screen, and the display’s colours and contrast aren’t a match for the Steam Deck OLED – even if the Ally’s higher resolution and refresh rate levels the playing field a bit. The price is a lot spicier than Valve’s handheld, too – it’s now almost in gaming laptop territory. Original ROG Ally shouldn’t be in a rush to upgrade, then, and the Steam Deck OLED remains my top pick – but the gap is narrower than ever.

La ROG Xbox Ally X viene proposta a un prezzo di listino di 899 euro, lo stesso del modello precedente al lancio. In un mercato tecnologico dove i rincari sono ormai la norma, mantenere questo posizionamento è di per sé una buona notizia. Tuttavia, è inevitabile domandarsi: vale davvero la pena spendere questa cifra per una console Windows-based? La risposta dipende molto dal tipo di esperienza che si cerca, ma alla luce di quanto visto finora, la risposta è più sì che no, con qualche considerazione da fare. La Ally X non è una console per tutti. Non è pensata per chi cerca semplicità assoluta, plug-and-play puro e giochi sempre ottimizzati senza dover toccare nulla: per quello esistono Nintendo Switch o Steam Deck.

Se fossimo stati in Microsoft avremmo portato sulla Rog Xbox il sistema operativo della Xbox, senza Windows. Un po’ come ha fatto Valve con SteamOS. Se poi una persona vuole Windows può installarlo in dual boot. Questo approccio avrebbe però portato ad un problema di fondo: i giochi sul Steam, Epic Game, Gog e quelli installati direttamente in Windows si sarebbero potuti eseguire solo dentro Windows, e non dentro l’interfaccia Xbox.Microsoft ha cercato di dare entrambe le cose: da una parte una esperienza Xbox che va oltre la semplice interfaccia, ma è ben più profonda, e dall’altra una integrazione di tutte le piattaforme all’interno dell’interfaccia Xbox.

Siamo contenti e soddisfatti di ROG Xbox Ally X? Sì, assolutamente: Microsoft e ASUS hanno sfruttato al massimo le loro competenze per portare sul mercato un dispositivo che funziona bene, è comodo da utilizzare, ha le giuste prestazioni quando servono, ed è incredibilmente ottimizzato quando a contare sono l'efficienza e la gestione dei consumi. Con interessanti ripercussioni sul fronte dell'autonomia e della silenziosità della macchina. Allo stesso tempo ci aspettavamo qualcosa di più? Sì, senz'altro: quando c'è da spingere sulle performance, sembra che lo Z2 Extreme sia frenato mentre il display risulta davvero anacronistico, quasi un'anomalia rispetto al resto della componentistica. Nel 2025, dopo aver speso 900€, si fatica a essere soddisfatti di questo elemento che chiaramente è centrale nell'intera esperienza d'uso.

But Microsoft's attempt to turn Windows 11 into an OS for portable consoles has not yet met expectations. There are a lot of glitches, bugs, freezes, unfinished parts and questions about the interface, behind which it has not yet been possible to completely disguise the same Windows 11 under the Xbox logo. There is hope that with updates everything will get better.

So, is it expensive? I’d say not really. We can still do everything that we want to do on a laptop since it’s essentially a laptop in the form of a controller with a screen in the middle. We can still convert it back to a laptop by plugging in a dongle, or get the ROG Bulwark Dock and use it that way too.

The textured grips are really nice, as is the jet black colourway that is exclusive to the X iteration of the Xbox Ally.The hardware is great, the performance is what we’d expect from a handheld PC and frankly ASUS has done a bang-up job with its own software. But Microsoft lets the team down on this project. Windows still works but we really would have liked to have seen the Redmond colossus offering up more than the X logo here and crafted something special for the first handheld bearing its name.Frankly, it looks like Microsoft phoned it’s participation on this project in.ASUS though, stellar job folks.

Of course, that's a lot of conditionals. Plainly speaking, the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme doesn't particularly impress versus its predecessor. As we said earlier in the review, if you were hoping for a big performance uplift due to the 33% larger GPU, well it's just not there. Some games do actually benefit pretty significantly, and if you take into account the gains from playing in the Xbox Full Screen Experience, then this machine can be as much as 40% faster than the original ROG Ally X.

The power packed into this portable gamer is pretty impressive. Even on the basic Silent mode, you can happily play Diablo 4 on Ultra graphics settings, while the likes of Tony Hawk also runs well. Boost the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X to the Performance or Turbo modes and AAA PC titles like Indiana Jones are more than playable, even on higher graphics settings. Even better is the battery life, which ranks among the best of any handheld gaming console I've tested in 2025. The Xbox ROG Ally X supplies three to four hours of non-stop game action on one charge, even on Performance and 25w Ultra modes. That's better than I experienced on the Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch 2 (when playing AAA games). And while you don't have an OLED panel, games still look great on the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X.

Portability has become increasingly important in recent times. The sales success of the Nintendo Switch meant both Microsoft and Sony rushed to develop their own. Not so much a portable Xbox, instead it was more akin to a Steamdeck. A portable PC. Being produced by ASUS Republic of Gamers brand had us fearing for our wallets. Whilst it is hardly priced at the everyman there is so much flexibility and quality hardware in the ROG Xbox Ally that if you want what it offers, nothing else comes close. We worried when we first saw it that it was going to be locked to the Xbox infrastructure.

It’s also worth mentioning that Asus sells a $149 product called the Bulwark Dock, which lets you plug in a variety of devices, including the Xbox Ally X, to monitors, TVs and other peripherals. With 7-in-1 connectivity, you can plug in laptops, phones and other handhelds. It’s also got a stand for your device and an anti-slip rubber base. I tried it with the Ally X and it worked well, if not entirely suited for my personal setup. (I don’t yet have a proper desk and primarily use an already full entertainment stand.) Really, it’s a pretty solid investment if you’re someone who games with any portable device, even if you don’t end up going with the Ally X.

But Microsoft lets the team down on this project. Windows still works but we really would have liked to have seen the Redmond colossus offering up more than the X logo here and crafted something special for the first handheld bearing its name.Frankly, it looks like Microsoft phoned it’s participation on this project in.ASUS though, stellar job folks.

Of course, that's a lot of conditionals. Plainly speaking, the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme doesn't particularly impress versus its predecessor. As we said earlier in the review, if you were hoping for a big performance uplift due to the 33% larger GPU, well it's just not there. Some games do actually benefit pretty significantly, and if you take into account the gains from playing in the Xbox Full Screen Experience, then this machine can be as much as 40% faster than the original ROG Ally X.

The power packed into this portable gamer is pretty impressive. Even on the basic Silent mode, you can happily play Diablo 4 on Ultra graphics settings, while the likes of Tony Hawk also runs well. Boost the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X to the Performance or Turbo modes and AAA PC titles like Indiana Jones are more than playable, even on higher graphics settings. Even better is the battery life, which ranks among the best of any handheld gaming console I've tested in 2025. The Xbox ROG Ally X supplies three to four hours of non-stop game action on one charge, even on Performance and 25w Ultra modes. That's better than I experienced on the Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch 2 (when playing AAA games). And while you don't have an OLED panel, games still look great on the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X.

Not so much a portable Xbox, instead it was more akin to a Steamdeck. A portable PC. Being produced by ASUS Republic of Gamers brand had us fearing for our wallets. Whilst it is hardly priced at the everyman there is so much flexibility and quality hardware in the ROG Xbox Ally that if you want what it offers, nothing else comes close. We worried when we first saw it that it was going to be locked to the Xbox infrastructure.

Finally, should you buy the ROG Xbox Ally? Well, it depends on you. I’d say the ROG Xbox Ally is a great entry point to the world of handheld PC gaming. It’s a mostly hassle-free experience thanks to the Xbox Full Screen Experience, though we can still change back to the traditional desktop mode to tinker around some more if we want to. If you already own the ROG Ally with the Z1 like I have, then the upgrades are mostly in the grip comfort and quality of life features like having another USB-C port, a larger battery, and also a microSD card reader that wouldn’t burn. At the price of RM2,699, I think it’s a good device – especially if you play some not-so-demanding games like… let’s say metroidvanias like Ender Lilies or Ender Magnolia, or platformers like Yooka-Replayee. It’s definitely a much better and more affordable option to play PC games compared to emulating them on a phone – that’s for sure.

Overall, I really like the Xbox Ally. The hardware is very good, it’s extremely comfortable even in longer playing sessions, and the battery life is decent (depending on what games you play). However, some of what makes the Xbox Ally special won’t be exclusive forever. Other handhelds will likely ship with AMD’s solid Ryzen Z2 A chip, and the Xbox software experience should eventually come to all handhelds and PCs. The ultimate question, of course, is whether you should buy the Xbox Ally. At $799, it’s a steep price, especially for a product that frankly doesn’t do anything unique. There are a ton of solutions for portable gaming, including other handhelds that cost less (the Steam Deck and, laughably, the also very expensive Switch 2).

Microsoft finally getting on board the PC gaming handheld train in an official capacity is great news, and the Xbox ROG Ally is a strong start. Behind-the-scenes work has finally stopped Windows from feeling like a lead weight, and the full-screen Xbox interface is a massive improvement over what we had before. On the hardware front, the controller-like grips also make a massive difference to comfort and playability. I don’t think any of that means all of the Xbox faithful should rush out to buy one, though. The base model Ally can’t match the cheaper Steam Deck OLED for performance muscle, and it doesn’t last as long per charge. Valve’s machine has a superior OLED screen, too.

Well, the only benefit of it retaining the display as before is that the price didn't go up by much. The ROG Xbox Ally starts at PHP 36,995, and it already comes with 3 months of free Xbox Game Pass subscription. If you find the performance of the standard Xbox Ally lacking, the X variant retails for PHP 56,995 featuring a more powerful chip and a larger 80Wh battery.

With recent price rises for Game Pass, a focus on flagship games releasing on other platforms and reports of retailers moving away from stocking Xbox hardware, the timing of the ROG Xbox Ally release seems questionable.It doesn't take away from my overall good impressions of my hands-on experience with the system, but it's difficult to not see potential customers taking recent Microsoft business decisions into account when weighing up handheld options.

The ROG Xbox Ally is pricey. The handheld is priced at Rs 69,990, which is more than traditional consoles. However, the Ally is not trying to be a traditional console. The controls are good and accurate, the display is the right size for gaming, and even on 720p, you get detailed visuals. The speakers are impressive and further enhance the experience.The Asus ROG Xbox Ally does what it claims - it is a comfortable gaming device that provides the Xbox experience. Windows does not interfere with performance, which is a boon to say the least. The handset is a way of bridging the gap between the world of consoles and PCs with added portability.

Overall, I really like the Xbox Ally. The hardware is very good, it’s extremely comfortable even in longer playing sessions, and the battery life is decent (depending on what games you play). However, some of what makes the Xbox Ally special won’t be exclusive forever. Other handhelds will likely ship with AMD’s solid Ryzen Z2 A chip, and the Xbox software experience should eventually come to all handhelds and PCs. The ultimate question, of course, is whether you should buy the Xbox Ally. At $799, it’s a steep price, especially for a product that frankly doesn’t do anything unique. There are a ton of solutions for portable gaming, including other handhelds that cost less (the Steam Deck and, laughably, the also very expensive Switch 2).

Microsoft finally getting on board the PC gaming handheld train in an official capacity is great news, and the Xbox ROG Ally is a strong start. Behind-the-scenes work has finally stopped Windows from feeling like a lead weight, and the full-screen Xbox interface is a massive improvement over what we had before. On the hardware front, the controller-like grips also make a massive difference to comfort and playability. I don’t think any of that means all of the Xbox faithful should rush out to buy one, though. The base model Ally can’t match the cheaper Steam Deck OLED for performance muscle, and it doesn’t last as long per charge. Valve’s machine has a superior OLED screen, too.

All-in-all, ASUS made some serious improvements to the ROG Xbox Ally as compared to the original ROG Ally. At the same time, it still retains all of the looks and gamer feel of the original handheld device. With a new processor, it can now run more graphic-intensive games. The battery lasts a lot longer too. If only ASUS fitted a larger screen or even an OLED one, it would be even better. Well, the only benefit of it retaining the display as before is that the price didn't go up by much. The ROG Xbox Ally starts at PHP 36,995, and it already comes with 3 months of free Xbox Game Pass subscription. If you find the performance of the standard Xbox Ally lacking, the X variant retails for PHP 56,995 featuring a more powerful chip and a larger 80Wh battery.
