Nel momento in cui scrivo ROG Ally si trova senza alcuna difficoltà a meno di 599 euro, un prezzo che trovo correttissimo per un sistema che ancora oggi offre garanzie e un’esperienza di gioco più che buona. La nuova arrivata, Ally X, esce invece a 899 euro che oggettivamente non sono pochi ma che, d’altra parte, ci danno anche garanzie piuttosto solide sulla possibilità di avere l’originale a un prezzo accessibile anche andando avanti nei mesi. Si tratta quindi di scegliere. Se pensate ad Ally come un sistema di gioco secondario, da affiancare al PC di casa o a una console, io forse approfitterei del prezzo vantaggioso a cui la prima iterazione viene venduta. Se invece credete che un sistema del genere, agile e versatile, possa essere il vostro centro d’intrattenimento videoludico principale, Ally X ha tante piccole chicche e migliorie che, seppur non capovolgenti, tutte insieme rendono l’esperienza migliore. E questo vale anche per chi sta pensando a un upgrade.

ASUS torna sul mercato degli handheld con un dispositivo che risolve molte delle sbavature del modello originale, senza riuscire tuttavia ad esaurirle completamente. Preso come prodotto a sé stante, ignorando le dinamiche di mercato, ROG Ally X si erge probabilmente a miglior handheld in circolazione, in virtù di un'autonomia che finalmente consente di utilizzarlo a lungo e di tanti piccoli miglioramenti ergonomici che compensano il peso maggiorato di 70 grammi. Il problema più grande di ROG Ally X è però ROG Ally, il modello originale, che con lo stesso AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme, oggi ha un cartellino di 599€, ovvero costa il 35% in meno.

With all the improvements made, the ROG Ally X now easily gives the Legion Go a run for its money as the best gaming handheld right now. I also like that it now sports a more ergonomic button layout, with the back buttons being made smaller, which should help reduce accidental presses during gameplay sessions. Additionally, the analog sticks and face buttons are now positioned at a more comfortable angle, making it easier and more comfortable for gamers to move their thumbs between them. I wish ROG could have made more changes to the ROG Ally X, such as detachable controllers or a back stand, for example.

The ROG Ally X is Better in Every Way Except One

While the improvements are impressive, should you upgrade to the ROG Ally X if you already own the original with the Z1 Extreme in the Philippines? Our recommendation is to skip it if you can since you’ve most likely invested enough money to swap out the SSD, buy a JSAUX grip case for it, and maybe even a high-capacity power bank to extend gameplay while you’re out and about. The improvements are impressive but we think that you should wait for something with better internals to come around unless you’ve got a stacked bank account or your original breaks down beyond repair.

And I have to give Asus some props for Armoury Crate SE, its skin and utility software. I hate the full Armoury Crate that's on the company's ROG laptops, mostly because it's a hot mess of conflicting places to change settings. SE is designed to run on a smaller screen and is more manageable, though still a bit confusing. In addition to essential features, like control binding for both gamepad and desktop modes and lighting control, it also lets you manually adjust the fan and power settings, change the among of memory dedicated to the iGPU (though I didn't test it) and more. Between the price, the problems inherent in grafting a console-like experience on Windows and the uncertainty of how well any particular game may run on it, especially in a couple of years, it's hard to give anything other than a qualified recommendation for the Ally X.

The Asus ROG Ally X may not boast a new processor or snazzy OLED screen tech, but it fixes practically every complaint that consumers had about the first-gen handheld. It’s more ergonomically shaped with better control placement, offers improved cooling, boosted RAM and storage and, most importantly, a massive improvement in battery life. In fact, I’d argue that the ROG Ally X’s 80Wh battery is the main reason to opt for it over competing handhelds like the ROG Ally, Steam Deck OLED and Lenovo Legion Go, even at a more premium price point. The handheld delivers essentially double what you’d get from the regular Ally, offering around three hours of battery life in AAA games at the highest graphical settings in Performance mode, and over two hours in Turbo mode, with significantly better performance in certain titles. It’s still not going to beat something like the Nintendo Switch OLED, but for a PC gaming-focused handheld, it leads the pack.

If you’re new to the whole PC gaming handheld thing, and want to play more than just your Steam library without messing about with Linux, the Asus ROG Ally X is now the obvious choice. It lasts longer than the original, has an easily upgradeable SSD, and more RAM than any Steam Deck. The refined ergonomics also put both the MSI Claw and Lenovo Legion Go in the shade. It’s not perfect: Windows 11 still doesn’t feel entirely happy on a small screen, and the display’s colours and contrast aren’t a match for the Steam Deck OLED – even if the Ally’s higher resolution and refresh rate levels the playing field a bit. The price is a lot spicier than Valve’s handheld, too – it’s now almost in gaming laptop territory. Original ROG Ally shouldn’t be in a rush to upgrade, then, and the Steam Deck OLED remains my top pick – but the gap is narrower than ever.
