The only drawbacks are a slightly noisy DVD writer, a limited range of ports and a very off-putting price tag.

The most striking feature of this 17in MacBook Pro, however, is more traditional: the screen. Although only a traditional white LED panel, it boasts fantastic colour range, accuracy and clarity. If you're happy spending the best part of $5000 on a laptop that places style ahead of more practical considerations, or you need a near-perfect screen with plenty of desktop space, the 17in MacBook Pro is a great choice. Be warned, though: your money could go further elsewhere.

When we reviewed the last update of the 17-inch MacBook Pro in March, we were impressed with how light and thin it had gotten, considering how much muscle it can flex. We were a little disappointed with some aspects of its performance, but overall counted it as a good value for what you got. Just a few months later, though, Apple has come back with a new 17-inch MacBook Pro that isn’t drastically different but is cheaper and showed some improvements in our testing. Apple’s improved 17-inch MacBook Pro is a dream for designers or anyone who doesn’t want to sacrifice power for portability.

If you are just such a user, though, and you’re hungry for the extra screen size (and the non-glare option), the 17-inch MacBook Pro is unlikely to disappoint.  Time will tell whether Apple’s battery predictions pan out, and - starting from $2,799 and, when maxed out with a 256GB SSD, hitting $4,899 - the price certainly won’t be confused for a budget option, but it’s an incredible workstation with the power to back up its promises.  We’re just hoping Apple hear the positive feedback and roll the non-glare display coating option down to the smaller models in the range.

Using iTunes 8.0.2, it took six minutes to import an eight-song, 45-minute CD at 128kbps. QuickTime Pro 7.6 exported our five-minute, 720x480, 30fps movie to iPod-friendly resolutions in five minutes, 42 seconds, another good score. Apart from the battery, there's no massive advance from the 15-inch model. Even so, an increase in performance is enough to justify Apple's claim that it's 'the most powerful Mac notebook yet.'

We really liked the 17-inch MacBook Pro, it's a great machine that delivers the goods in terms of performance and design. Despite its size as a 17-inch desktop replacement, Apple has managed to keep a svelte and slim figure that's barely any thicker than the 15-inch model. Of course, there are some drawbacks from the design, and we're sure the non-removable battery is probably on top of your mind. Retailing at a cool S$4388, the 17-inch MacBook Pro is indeed pricey and may not be the wisest purchase price-wise. However it is simply one of the coolest notebooks around and it delivers on almost all accounts - gorgeous design, great physique, sex appeal, worthy performance and great battery stamina. Now don't forget that all this is from Apple and that should speak for itself.

A price tag of £1949 is enough to make even the most diehard Mac fan think twice. You could certainly get a similarly specified PC laptop for less – although features such as the Firewire port, twin graphics cards and the long-lasting battery do make direct comparisons difficult. If you just want a powerful Mac laptop then the 13in and 15in models undoubtedly offer better value for money. But then the 17in MacBook Pro is a niche product aimed at a relatively small number of Apple’s creative users who specifically need that big screen display. The real question, therefore, is whether this new model will tempt those users to upgrade from their existing machines. On that score, the new 17in model will probably succeed, as the twin graphics cards and unibody design correct the most obvious omissions in December’s somewhat pointless update. The new long-lasting battery might also help to swing the decision if people think that it will genuinely allow them to get more work done wHen they’re on the move.

Ultimately, the decision about whether to buy the bigger MacBook Pro is probably already made -- if you're a power user who needs the real estate, there's little to deter you from making this purchase. Apple has cleaned up the design in all the right ways, improved the display and guts considerably, and proved that it can milk a substantial amount of time from a non-removable battery. The cost may still be a major barrier here for most, but something tells us if you really need a computer of this size, you'll find a way to pay for it. Our actual gripe comes not in the form of problems with this particular system, but in Apple's methodology of rolling out options for their laptops.

When the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Dual Graphics) and the MacBook 13-inch (Aluminum) launched with their "unibody" enclosures—in each case, a heavily promoted slab of aluminum that rids the frame of all detachable parts—a "uni-seventeen-incher" was clearly on the way. Doubts about the redesigned keyboard, the touchpad, and the non-removable battery can be put to rest, because the Apple MacBook Pro 17-inch (Unibody) is as powerful as it is gorgeous.

I admit the MacBook Pro is not perfect – actually, it is bloody expensive at a mere quid short of £2,100. Add to that the cost of any of the aforementioned adapters, which might involve a new found love of the ExpressCard/34 slot, if you get really desperate. Yup, it is, quite simply, out of my price range. The Top Gear team spend less than that on second-hand Bentleys. Yet it does deliver an exceptional user experience. So ask your employer to buy you one, or get the next-best alternative: the 15in model. Either way, no-one will convince me that it’s money badly spent.

Apple's silent refresh of the Apple MacBook Pro 17 added a few spec increases that help keep the system at high levels of performance. Apple: Apple è una società statunitense fondata nel 1976 da Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak e Ronald Wayne. Con sede a Cupertino, in California, l'azienda è nota per i suoi prodotti innovativi come iPhone, iPad, Mac e Apple Watch e produce computer ed elettronica di consumo, nonché sistemi operativi e software applicativi. Apple è anche un fornitore leader di software e servizi come App Store, iTunes e iCloud.

Apple si è guadagnata la reputazione di azienda che si concentra sul design e sulla facilità d'uso. Per quanto riguarda i loro notebook, sono per lo più nel segmento di fascia alta, hanno il proprio sistema operativo, ma eseguono anche Windows sui Macbook più recenti.

Apple è una delle aziende più preziose al mondo e ha un fedele seguito di clienti e fan. L'azienda ha anche una forte presenza nel settore dell'intrattenimento, con servizi come Apple Music e Apple TV+. Nel 2023, Apple deteneva una quota di mercato di circa l'8% delle vendite globali di PC, classificandosi al 4° posto dopo Lenovo, HP e Dell.

La maggior parte dei giochi attuali può essere giocata in modo fluido. Ma preparatevi ad una riduzione delle presentazioni grafiche considerando le impostazioni di dettaglio basse e la risoluzione limitata. Tuttavia, queste schede forniscono ancora abbastanza potenza per le applicazioni da ufficio e la proiezioni di video (ma non per i video HD).

NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT: Successore del modello 8600 GT e grazie alla tecnologia usata a 65nm la scheda è overclockata. Questo la rende più veloce ma con lo stesso consumo di corrente. Inoltre alcune caratteristiche sono state migliorate come il processore video (VP3) e HybridPower per risparmiare corrente.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M: La Nvidia GeForce GT 330M è il successore della GT 230M e stando alle informazioni trapelate una GT 240M con un clock superiore (ma dovrebbe ancora mantenere la potenza della GT 230M come suggerisce il nome).

Ridurre la distanza delle Schede Grafiche per gli utenti che vogliono utilizzare il videogiochi. I nuovi giochi dovrebbero funzionare su queste schede, ma con riduzione dei dettagli e risoluzione mediocre.

AMD Radeon HD 6750M:

AMD Radeon HD 6770M: La scheda più veloce delle serie 6600M/6700M con memoria GDDR5, UVD3 e supporto Eyefinity+. E' l'immediato successore della HD 5770 con più cores ed un clock rate più elevato.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Questo è il successore del Core Duo e del Core Solo con una pipeline più lunga ed il 5-20% di velocità in più senza avere maggiore consumo di energia. Come aggiunta al design del Core Duo esiste un quarto decoder, una unità amplificata SSE ed una unità logica aritmetica (ALU) addizionale. Il Core 2 Duo per portatili è identico al processore per desktop Core 2 Duo ma il processore per portatili lavora con un voltaggio inferiore (0.95 a 1188 Volt) ed un Frontside bus clock inferiore (1066 vs 667 MHz). Le prestazioni di portatili con clock equivalenti sono inferiori del 20-25% rispetto ai PCs Desktop a causa del Frontside bus clock inferiore e agli hard disks più lenti.

T9550: La T9550 è una CPU dual-core di media classe della linea Core 2 Duo ed è simile alla P9600 (ad eccezione del TDP più elevato della T9550 - 35 contro 25 W). Le prestazioni della T9550 dovrebbero essere sufficienti per la maggior parte di applicazioni e giochi del 2009.

Intel Core i5:

540M: Il Core i5-540M ha solo 3 MB di L3 Cache (rispetto all'I7-640M) ed un clock tra 2.53-3.06 GHz (Turbo Mode). Grazie all'Hyperthreading, possono essere processati 4 threads contemporaneamente. Nel pacchetto è inclusa anche una scheda grafica (GMA HD 3150) ed un controller memoria DDR3.

Intel Core i7:

2720QM: Veloce processore Quad-core basato sulla architettura Sandy Bridge con scheda grafica integrata e controller di memoria dual-channel DDR3.

2760QM: Veloce processore quad-core con clock da 2.4-3.5 GHz basato sull'architettura Sandy Bridge con una scheda grafica integrata ed un controller di memoria dual-channel DDR3.
