Il risultato è una macchina che per la prima volta porta l'esperienza Mac a un prezzo che non richiede un piano di risparmio pluriennale. Non è il MacBook per tutti. Chi lavora con contenuti creativi, chi ha bisogno di multitasking spinto, chi non può fare a meno di Thunderbolt o di uno spazio colore ampio farà bene a guardare altrove, probabilmente verso un MacBook Air / Pro. Ma per studenti, per chi si avvicina al mondo Mac per la prima volta, per chi cerca un secondo laptop leggero e affidabile, e per chi semplicemente vuole una macchina che funzioni bene senza pensarci troppo, il Neo è probabilmente la risposta giusta. A 699 euro è un buon laptop che mancava nella line-up Apple. A 599 euro con lo sconto education è un affare difficile da ignorare.

Crediamo che uno studente universitario abbia esigenze un po’ più alte: sicuramente è più adatto un Air, e se uno studente fa materie stem, ad esempio ingegneria, potrebbe anche valutare computer non Apple visto che molti software che userà all’università non girano su macOS. Lo sconto quindi c’è, e porta il prezo a 599 euro, ma è uno sconto che non tocca il target migliore: questo è il laptop perfetto per uno studente delle superiori.

Certo, i compromessi ci sono, ma quelli che davvero minano l’esperienza di utilizzo sono pochi. La mancanza di retroilluminazione della tastiera non è terribile, ma effettivamente mi sono ritrovato sul divano la sera a fare vibe coding cercando di appellarmi alla mia memoria muscolare per toccare i tasti giusti. Un giovane utente che magari lo usa in biblioteche o la sera a letto, potrebbe trovare un po’ ostico questo aspetto. Avere decine di programmi e finestre aperte mette più facilmente in crisi il processore, ma bisogna impegnarsi un po’ per farlo. Se si lavora con SSD esterni bisogna ricordarsi che una delle porte è più lenta e anche che non c’è la ricarica veloce. E la batteria? Termino una giornata produttiva in cui ho scritto, sistemato slide, guardato video e montato la video recensione del Neo con il 55% di batteria. Non è il Pro, ma è comunque un ottimo risultato.

But here in Nepal, where Apple's student discount program is nonexistent, that’s where it gets a little complicated for this guy. Or not because the M2 Air that avoids every. single. issue I have with the MacBook Neo, is available for around NPR 125,000 these days. Making it a much better value! And if you do more than the “basic” stuff, like programming, photo/video editing, or music production, the M2 chip’s superior multi-core performance and a spacious 16GB of memory are gonna be so much more useful than whatever else the MacBook Neo is offering. Trust me on this.

Most assumed that a MacBook that ran on an iPhone chip would require some serious compromise. However, the MacBook Neo has proved that this is not the case. The A18 Pro chip is not only capable of lightning fast operation for the iPhone 16 Pro / Pro Max, but it handles a full version of Mac OS Tahoe too. Yes, some compromises have been made to hit this price point and perhaps to differentiate it from the MacBook Air. The lack of backlight on the keyboard, the sRGB screen, the non-thunderbolt ports, and the older style 12MP webcam. However, even with these compromises, the Neo is a great machine to use. It would have been lovely to have a bit more customisation available, to increase the SSD capacity and maybe add some more memory – though that is potentially limited by the A18 Pro chip. It also seems a little bit tight to only offer the Touch ID with the 512GB capacity model, as it’s a genuinely useful feature and one that can impact security. Overall though, the MacBook Neo is surprisingly good. I would genuinely recommend this machine to any Apple fans looking for a new laptop. For those creators looking for a workhorse, it doesn’t replace the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, but for everyone else, it’s more than enough to handle all your tasks.

This system ticks all the right boxes for its low price, with a premium aluminum design, a rich and bright display you’d normally find on $1,000 laptops and good-enough performance from its A18 Pro chip. I also like the side-mounted speakers, as well as the comfy keyboard and smooth touchpad. And the more than 13 hours of battery life is very impressive at this price. However, the MacBook Neo does make some trade-offs. I wish Touch ID was standard, and the lack of Thunderbolt and a keyboard backlight is a bummer. And you should not expect to do video editing on this machine with any speed, nor should you expect the zippiest performance when you have a ton of apps open or with Apple Intelligence tasks. But for $599 / AU$899, you would be hard pressed to find a laptop that even comes close to the MacBook Neo’s value. It’s arguably the best value laptop ever and raises the bar for the entire industry.

While its price is at the higher end of what I’d consider 'budget', the design, build quality and performance are all leagues ahead of its Windows and Chromebook competitors. I particularly like how there’s been no compromise when it comes to macOS — you can run any Mac app or connect your iPhone up to the MacBook Neo, just as you can with far more expensive Mac products, and the screen also blows the budget competition out of the water. However, sacrifices have been made when it comes to the USB-C ports, lack of keyboard backlight and limited unified memory, which although understandable are also a shame.
