For the most part, this Acer Nitro 5 gaming laptop is the same as before but supercharged with even more powerful components. You get great performance, 1440p display with 165Hz refresh rate, a comfortable 4-zone RGB keyboard, decent array of ports, can function as an emergency powerbank, and it finally moved towards the HDMI 2.1 standard. However, the build quality can still be improved, would be better if they made it lighter, there is slight thermal throttling, display is a little dim, and it lacks an SD card reader. At RM8,999, this may seem pricey but given what you’re getting, it does provide good value for money spent, especially since you wouldn’t need to upgrade anything further. At the end of our Acer Nitro 5 review, I award this gaming laptop with our Silver Pokdeward.

Sure, it’s an all-plastic device but the whole build is sturdy while we observe some slight bends here and there but nothing too serious. At the same time, the laptop offers a decent gaming experience, the fans aren’t too loud, the CPU temperature is fine and the same goes for the GPU – 76°C core temperature is a normal result especially for a graphics card like the GeForce RTX 3080. The whole picture is complemented by a good keyboard and if you pick the optional unit with RGB backlight we can call the Acer Nitro 5 (AN517-41) a complete package for gaming.

Well, the gaming laptops world updates almost every day, so research before deciding is always a good step. After research, I found this laptop to be the best in its category in terms of price point and its specs. It beats a lot of laptops, also 2000 range laptops. And there are not too many 17-inch range gaming laptops in the market. So if you are looking for an excellent gaming laptop with a larger 17-inch screen, with the newest Intel i7 CPU, beefy Graphics, and 1TB, yes 1TB (!!) SSD, this AN517-54-77KG is a really good value for its price, unless, of course, if you want to spend more.

The Acer Nitro 5 (AN517-54) is a decent non-expensive offer with a 17.3″ screen. It seems the AN517-54 devices offer a lot of bang for their buck. The display options include two 1080p IPS screens with 60 Hz and 144 Hz refresh rates and there is a 1440p panel with a 165 Hz refresh rate – the latter will be a good idea if you choose the GeForce RTX 3070 (100W). In short, the Acer Nitro 5 (AN517-54) is a decent non-expensive gaming laptop with a big 17.3″ screen that comes with a good keyboard and decent touchpad. It comes with great upgradability options for its price. Given the weird cooling behavior in processor loads, we wouldn’t count on the Nitro 5 to be always there for us in CPU-intensive scenarios. On the other hand, the machine is extremely stable during gaming, and when you combine this with the fantastic 1440p display, you will get probably the best gaming experience for the money. So, would we recommend the Nitro 5 (AN517-55)? Well, yes, we would. There is a couple of stuff we don’t really like, especially the super loud noise coming from the fans. However, it is present mainly when you use the “Performance” preset in the NitroSense app. And to be honest, if you get an RTX 3070 Ti, you wouldn’t really need to use that mode, because the GPU is still one of the most powerful ones out there. Especially in its 150W iteration.

As you have just read (unless you skipped to the end), the Acer Nitro 5 AN517 is not without its faults. But every budget laptop makes a few missteps and none of our issues with this 17.3-inch Nitro 5 are deal breakers. Sure, the plastic chassis is clunky, the display isn’t the brightest, the keyboard is only so-so, the touchpad is tiny, and the webcam is terrible. These design drawbacks are what you must tolerate for the bang that this Nitro 5 provides for your gaming buck. At its core, the Nitro 5’s CPU-GPU pairing of the Ryzen 7 6800H and RTX 3060 graphics allow it to hang with pricier gaming laptops. For budget-conscious buyers, this $1,200 Nitro 5 configuration delivers strong 3D performance for the price while also providing a roomy display, quiet operation, and adequate battery life.

If you're not into consoles, the Acer Nitro 5 is a brilliant gaming laptop alternative. As long as you keep it plugged in and aren't looking to go crazy with settings, you'll have no problems running the latest games and playing at a steady framerate. It's the best of PC gaming without the biggest of price tags. If you want to run Cyberpunk 2077 at top specs this isn't the one for you, but for students looking to balance work and play, or who want to join their PC gaming friends, the Nitro 5 is not to be missed.

As with previous Nitro laptops, there’s a sense that Acer has hit the nail right on the head. Together, the Core i5 CPU and RTX 4050 do a great job of hitting good frame rates on the latest games at 1080p, with DLSS 3 in the wings if you want to enable ray tracing or if games grow more demanding in a few year’s time. Of course, Acer hasn’t got this market all to itself, and the Gigabyte G5 is a tempting alternative at a similar price. However, despite its RTX 4060 GPU the G5 isn’t actually much faster in games, and it can’t beat the Nitro where its weakest – its screen – because its own display isn’t significantly better. The MSI GF63 Thin is slimmer with slightly better battery life, but it has similar screen issues and the performance isn’t in the same class. For my money, that makes the Nitro 5 a real contender, provided you can live with the underwhelming brightness levels of the screen.
