80% HP Omen 17 (2023) review: Uncompromising performance

HP’s Omen line of laptops are known for their sheer speed and graphics firepower. The latest Omen 17 is no different in that regard, as it comes with a powerful Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 GPU and an Intel Core i9-13900HX CPU. The refreshed core components from the new GPU (Ada Lovelace) and CPU generation (Raptor Lake) are the main differences to last year’s Omen 17. The casing remains largely unchanged, however. It also sits in a black chassis with a plastic underside and a lid adorned with the Omen logo and lettering. The angular design gives the impression of pure power. While this laptop has a lot to offer, there are a few unimpressive aspects to it. Fingerprints on the lid and wrist rest are a nuisance after a short time. The lid also wobbles when you change the viewing angle and the case has no ports on the back, making cable management difficult. That said, those are minor quibbles with an otherwise outstanding gaming laptop.

We like the HP OMEN 17 (17-db0000). It’s a big stealthy-looking gaming machine with capable cooling and enough performance for playing games with bumped visuals. While having fun with your favorite titles, you’ll notice that the fans aren’t aggressively tuned which isn’t the case with many other contenders of the OMEN 17. Also, the GPU and especially the CPU thermals during max loads are always under control. In this case, the keyboard becomes just a bit warm, not hot. Overall, that’s one of the few gaming devices on the market that offers good comfort without compromising performance. While the 1080p 144Hz screen (CMN1779) may not sound impressive on paper it has a lot of tricks up in its sleeve.

The HP Omen 17 is more than capable of playing AAA titles at high settings with a smooth refresh rate and practically no retained heat, thanks to an impressively effective thermal design. That said, this isn’t the laptop you should buy if high-quality, loud speakers or a satisfyingly clicky keyboard are important to you. The Alienware m16 R2 we reviewed, which also sports an RTX 4070 GPU, produced quite tinny sound, but its keyboard was a breath of fresh air. Its minor flaws and low battery life are easy to overlook if you’re the type of gamer who knows they’ll be connecting headphones, a mouse, and other peripherals for a better experience and won’t play unplugged because it often means sacrificing higher frame rates. If all you care about is overall performance and you’d prefer a gaming laptop with a minimalist look (and you don’t mind a plastic chassis), I’d say the HP Omen 17 is worth it.

HP OMEN 17: recensione computer portatile gaming con Ryzen 9

Fra tutti i PC da gaming portatili l‘HP OMEN 17-db0006nl si configura essere una ottima alternativa per chi non ha spazio per un intero setup composto da tower e schermo. Le dimensioni generose e il peso indifferente non vi permetteranno di portarlo attraverso la città senza sentirne la presenza ma non è di certo impossibile da trasportare, basta solo farci l’abitudine. Le temperature sono un po’ più più alte della media dei notebook gaming, specialmente se prendiamo in considerazione il fatto che la 4060 non è esattamente il top del top in termini di prestazioni, mentre la CPU fa la sua figura ma anche lei soffre dal punto di vista termico, con il sistema di raffreddamento che funziona, però sembra più calibrato a quando non si è attaccati alla corrente elettrica e quindi in prestazioni limitate.

Si tratta sicuramente di un portatile in grado di soddisfare appieno i gamer, anche se secondo noi più adatto a un uso casalingo che a uno nomade. Lo schermo, la tastiera e la qualità costruttiva in generale non hanno nulla da invidiare a quelli di un PC da gaming fisso. Inoltre, l’hardware interno sarà all’altezza del suo compito per parecchio tempo. Non è sicuramente un portatile che vi andrà stretto l’anno prossimo. Infine, grazie alla sua ampia disponibilità di connettori, ci permetterà sia di collegare tutti i nostri dispositivi direttamente oppure utilizzare un unico cavo, grazie alla USB Type-C. A un prezzo consigliato di circa 2000 euro, lo suggeriamo soprattutto ai gamer hard core che hanno poco spazio sulla scrivania e sono disposti a fare un investimento.

HP: Fondata nel 1939, l'azienda statunitense è un importante produttore di server e stampanti e una delle aziende IT leader a livello mondiale. Fino al 2015, la società si chiamava Hewlett-Packard Company. Dopo una scissione, la divisione computer è stata ribattezzata HP Inc.

Nel 2023, HP deteneva una quota di mercato approssimativa del 22% delle vendite globali di PC, diventando così il numero 2 dopo Lenovo.

Queste schede grafiche sono paragonabili alle entusiasmanti schede grafiche desktop, come la 9800M GT. Le schede hanno un core simile alle relative schede desktop, ma hanno un clock inferiore e spesso hanno processori con meno ombre. I giochi moderni come Age of Conan, Race Driver Grid, Call of Duty 4, Mass Effect, o Gothic 3 dovrebbero scorrere in modo fluido con dettagli elevati (Crysis dovrebbe funzionare con dettagli medio alti).

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU:

Scheda grafica di fascia alta per laptop basata sull'architettura Ada Lovelace. Offre 8 GB GDDR6 (128 Bit) ed è configurabile con un TGP di 35 - 115 W (+ Dynamic Boost).

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Laptop: Una prossima scheda grafica della famiglia Blackwell per computer portatili, che il Team Green presenterà molto probabilmente al CES 2025. Considerando che il laptop 4070 ha 4.608 shader unificati (core CUDA), il 5070 avrà molto probabilmente oltre 5.000 shader.

Queste schede grafiche dovrebbero essere in grado di far funzionare tutti i giochi attuali con un framerates fluido ma rinunciando al livello di dettaglio massimo. Specialmente i giochi impegnativi come Crysis, Age of Conan, o Mass Effect sono utilizzabili soltanto con impostazioni grafiche ridotte. I giochi meno pesanti (e più datati), come Fifa 08, Command & Conquer 3, o Battlefield 2142 possono essere giocati con livello di dettagli più alto.

Intel Raptor Lake-HX:

i9-13900HX: CPU mobile basata sulla serie Raptor Lake che offre 24 core (8 core per le prestazioni, 16 core per l'efficienza) con un core Boost fino a 5,8 GHz per i core P. Simile al Desktop i9-13900K, ma con velocità di clock e TDP ridotti.

AMD Hawk Point (Zen 4/4c):

R7 8845HS: Un potente chip della famiglia Hawk Point che ha visto la luce nell'H2 2023. Riteniamo che l'8845HS sia un R7 7840HS sotto mentite spoglie. L'8845HS è dotato di 8 core (16 thread grazie al supporto SMT) che funzionano fino a 5,1 GHz; oltre alla piena potenza dell'architettura Zen 4, il chip è dotato della tecnologia Ryzen AI di seconda generazione, destinata a rendere l'AI generativa più onnipresente che mai. Infine, ma non meno importante, la Radeon 780M funge da GPU integrata.

R9 8945HS: Una potente APU della famiglia Hawk Point. Non si tratta di un processore per laptop completamente nuovo, bensì di un R9 7940HS rimarchiato (i due sono identici praticamente in tutto). L'8945HS è dotato di 8 core Zen 4 abilitati SMT che funzionano a una frequenza compresa tra 4,0 GHz e 5,2 GHz, per un totale di 16 thread di elaborazione, ed è inoltre dotato della tecnologia Ryzen AI di seconda generazione, che mira a mettere completamente in ombra le tecnologie DL Boost e GNA di Intel. Per quanto riguarda la grafica, è presente l'iGPU Radeon 780M top di gamma, che renderà molto più piacevoli le sessioni di gioco occasionali.

AMD :

Ryzen AI 7 350: Un processore relativamente potente della famiglia Strix Point che ha debuttato nell'ottobre 2024. L'APU ad architettura ibrida presenta 8 core di CPU (un mix di core Zen 5 e Zen 5c) che funzionano fino a 5,0 GHz, insieme all'adattatore grafico Radeon 880M e al motore neurale XDNA 2 di 50 TOPS. Il Secure Processor di AMD (che in poche parole è un co-processore ARM on-package) è presente a bordo, così come alcune altre caratteristiche di fascia alta, come AMD-Vi. Altre caratteristiche chiave sono PCIe 4, USB 4 e supporto RAM fino a LPDDR5x-8000, compresa la RAM ECC. L'obiettivo di potenza TDP a lungo termine può arrivare a 55 W.
