Turion 64 X2 Ultra Badge

L'AMD Turion X2 Ultra (e l'AMD Turion X2) è il diretto successore dell'AMD Turion 64 X2 CPU ed p stato introdotto insieme alla Piattaforma Puma. Questi processori, nome in codice 'Griffin', sono una combinazione di core K8 (Turion 64 X2) e compomenti K10 (controller memoria, crossbar-switch, HyperTransport 3.0 link).

Inoltre, differiscono dalle vecchie CPUs Turion 64 X2 per l'utilizzo del cosiddetto 'design split power plane', che consente piani di voltaggio indipendenti per processore e controller di memoria per una migliore gestione basata sulle prestazioni e sulle esigenze del sistema. Pertanto è possibile anche un ulteriore contenimento del voltaggio dei componenti. Nei modelli precedenti il controller di memoria integrato veniva inibito da un eccessivo calo di voltaggio. I differenti piani di alimentazione richiedono distinti pins sul socket. Pertanto, il socket S1 e stato riconcepito nel S1g2 (generazione 2). Ha un controller di voltaggio separato per ogni pin. Quindi anche le precedenti CPU Turion X2 possono essere usate nei socket S1g2. Tuttavia, i vecchi portatili con socket S1 non possono essere aggiornati con una nuova Ultra CPU.

Una ulteriore modifica riguarda la tecnologia per il risparmio energetico. La PowerNow! ora supporta il fatto che il clock rate sia ridotto sino ad un quarto del massimo (500-600 MHz nel momento in cui scriviamo). Inoltre, supporta un livello intermedio con una frequenza clock dimezzata e voltaggio ridotto.

Infine, AMD ha migliorato anche la Cache L2. Le CPUs Ultra ora hanno 2x 1024 KB di cache L2 invece di 2x 512KB dei modelli precedenti. Rispetto ai 6MB di cache L2 dei modelli top Core 2 Duo, AMD è ancora indietro. I processori AMD Turion X2 (non gli Ultra) sono come i precedenti Turion 64 X2 dotati soltanto di 2x 512KB di cache L2 e pertanto sono più lenti dei nuovi Ultra.

Cores

Simili al Turion 64 X2 i due cores si basano sull'architettura K8L. Pertanto somigliano molto al core del Turion 64 ed ai cores dell' Athlon 64 X2 desktop. Ognuno dei due cores ha una cache L1 da 128 KB e 1024 KB di cache L2 (in base al modello). A causa della ridotta caache L2, il Turion X2 è più lento rispetto al Core 2 Duo.

Il Turion X2 Ultra è realizzato in 65nm (SOI) e supporta le seguenti estensioni di istruzioni: MMX, Extended 3DNow!, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, AMD64, PowerNow!, NX-Bit, AMD-V.

AMD Turion X2 Ultra

Prestazioni

Grazie al migliorato controller di memoria ed al raddoppio della capacità di cache L2 (Ultra) il Turion X2 dovrebbe avere prestazioni migliori rispetto ad un Turion 64 X2 con clock identico.  Tuttavia, è nettamente superato dal Core 2 Duo. In termini di prestazioni è più o meno paragonabile come un Core Duo rispetto ad un processore Pentium Dual-Core.
