Small changes make a huge difference, and that applies to the A71 (2018). It now has a better performing CPU and GPU, longer battery life, and A.I. Beauty Technology. However, it would’ve been a lot better if OPPO took this reboot opportunity to increase the internal storage, maybe add a fingerprint scanner, and switch to a USB Type-C port. If you don’t care about those and just want a daily driver that provides good performance and is below Php8K, then this device is worth considering.

For the price of RM899, it seems like a decent offering in terms of hardware. That being said, I would’ve liked it if they used a Snapdragon 665 instead of the Snapdragon 662 here. In my opinion, that should be the standard chipset for mid-range devices in today’s market. Performance-wise, it doesn’t stand out, and it definitely needs some polishing on that end.

You can Android 10 out of the box, 128GB of storage, SD card support, a headphone jack, and a very impressive 16MP front-facing camera which is great for HD video calls and selfies. It doesn’t have 5G, but right now I don’t think that is too much of a deal-breaker – especially at this price point. So, if you want a cheap Android phone that punches well outside its weight with respect to specs and performance, the OPPO A72 is well worth checking. At R7k, the Oppo A72 is a decent enough smartphone which will serve its user well. However, its asking price lines it up against some serious competition, including the Samsung A51 with 6 GB of RAM (but smaller battery), the Huawei P40 Lite (R6k and 6 GB RAM, although no Google services) and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro (R6.5k, 6 GB RAM). With the brand still pretty much unknown in South Africa, it might have done Oppo well to have dropped the A72’s price by at least R1 000. As it stands now, I doubt it will get tongues wagging.

Overall, the OPPO A74 is a decent enough device thanks to its battery performance and lovely AMOLED display for your daily usage. It is however hampered by their choice of using a Snapdragon 662. That being said, the device is still considered an entry-level offering from the brand. If you don’t mind the some of the cons that were mentioned earlier and you fancy the design, there’s nothing wrong if you decide to go for it, especially at the price of RM899. I just wish it had a better chipset..

All in all, we feel that the OPPO A74 4G is worth its RM899 price tag. It has a few notable highlights, such as the AMOLED display, extended virtual RAM, and other camera features. But if compared to its competitors, it's lacking in some areas as well. For one, there is no ultrawide lens, the refresh rate is only 60Hz, and the performance is just so-so. Perhaps the only threat to the OPPO A74 4G is the POCO X3 Pro. Although it has a higher price tag of RM999, it sports a significantly more powerful Snapdragon 870 chipset and supports a refresh rate of 120Hz. To be honest, there is no real contest between the two. Of course, the choice is up to you. If you want to save some money and have modest needs, the OPPO A74 4G is still good enough for casual usage.

The Oppo A74 5G is another highly competent budget phone from this reliable brand, but it doesn’t really do anything to stand out in a competitive field. It provides a well-balanced package with 5G connectivity and a design that’s tame and plasticky, but nonetheless solid. However, that cutting-edge network connectivity comes with the usual degree of compromise in the form of a fairly bog-standard (if far from bad) LCD rather than OLED screen. Performance is just about good enough, but gamers can do better for the money. Elsewhere the phone holds its own on battery life, but the provision of an 18W charger can’t quite match some of its affordable rivals. All in all, you might find that you can get more for your money with one of Xiaomi’s value-focused sub-brands. As always, though, the main question you should ask yourself is how much you actually need 5G connectivity, because similarly priced 4G phones are often better.

But despite these downsides, we can always see that there is no perfect phone right now that has the best specs while having a cherry on top 5G at a much cheaper price. It’s a hard decision if you want a phone with fast charging capability, but nonetheless, if you want to experience 5G, fast refresh rate, and a powerful chipset for the price, OPPO A74 5G is one of the choices.

We know the alternatives, but how is the Oppo A74 5G to use? A joy, mostly. The camera is responsive, the Snapdragon 480 chipset is better than you might guess considering it is part of Qualcomm’s ‘budget’ line. And while the Moto G50’s battery lasts longer, the Oppo A74 5G does just fine if you plan on charging every day. It’s a great ‘first 5G phone’, and to get something significantly more interesting at this level you have to ditch 5G and make do with 4G. There’s nothing ground-breaking going on in its camera array though, and some 4G phones around the price have better screens or much faster chipsets. We’re still experiencing a 5G growing pain or two, then, but if you care more about 5G than blistering gaming performance, advanced camera chops or getting a bold OLED screen, the Oppo A74 5G is a fine choice.

It seems clear that most competing devices outperform the A74 in all departments of a smartphone experience. The cameras on the A74 are not great and the night photography capbilities have a lot of ground to cover. For Rs 17,990, I would recommend the likes of the Realme 8 Pro (review), the Redmi Note 10 Pro, or the POCO X3 Pro (review) as better alternatives.

While you get a crippled set of video features, slower charging speeds, and just an LCD display, our review of the OPPO A74 5G in the Philippines shows that it is a compelling 5G phone for under Php 15k. Don’t scoff at the Snapdragon 480 processor – it may sound inferior, but our tests show that it is indeed the most powerful processor under Qualcomm’s entry-level Snapdragon series. In fact, we’re quite impressed at how the Snapdragon 480 can go up against popular Snapdragon 7-series processors like the Snapdragon 720G in both synthetic benchmarks and actual gaming. In comparison, the A74 5G simply doesn't offer enough value to make it a serious contender. It's not all bad though. The Oppo A74 5G does have a good display, an interesting colour scheme, decent app and gaming performance, and very good battery life. Unfortunately, these factors simply aren't enough in my opinion for it to stand out.

That’s about it for the review. Honestly, I just loved the battery life and how easy it is to use the phone singlehandedly. But besides that, there isn’t much that impressed me. Thus, I find it extremely difficult to recommend the phone to anyone at its current price. I primarily play CODM on my phone, but the Oppo A76 struggled to keep up with it. Besides, the multimedia experience was a little meh, courtesy of the average display and single speaker. I expected an Oppo phone to do well in the camera department, but the phone failed to perform once again. Oppo’s choices leave me bamboozled as I do not know who this phone is for. By no means is the phone terrible, but for the price Oppo is asking for the phone, you will be better off with other devices.

The Oppo A77 5G showed a very well-balanced performance in the battery protocol, earning it a top three ranking in the DXOMARK battery database. Its strong results were due to an outstanding autonomy showing when tested in factory default mode. Its performance in a typical usage scenario was one of the best we’ve tested so far, with very low consumption during the day and excellent management during the night (1.25% lost on average). The Oppo A77 5G also showed excellent autonomy during the on-the-go tests, especially when scrolling on social apps (which came in as the best autonomy tested to date), taking photos and videos, and using GPS navigation. However, when tested in calibrated mode, its autonomy in tests was near the average, but it did not match the excellent results in factory default mode. The device doesn’t seem to be optimized for a brightness level of 200 nits. The autonomy when calling, however, was exceptional, and much better than in tests on-the-go, where the device seemed to have more trouble searching and reaching antennas.

A fronte di un prezzo di listino davvero alto di 369,99 euro, al momento è possibile trovare l’OPPO A78 5G in offerta sul sito del produttore al prezzo di 279,99 euro, ma, con il mercato attuale, ancora troppo per un prodotto di fascia medio-bassa, con un display solo HD+ e una fotocamera con un solo sensore utilizzabile.

In conclusione, l’Oppo A78 5G è uno smartphone solido che offre un buon rapporto qualità-prezzo per chi cerca una soluzione 5G elegante, compatta e affidabile a livello software. I suoi punti di forza includono la connettività 5G, che garantisce una navigazione veloce e fluida, e la ricarica rapida a 33W, che permette di avere il dispositivo pronto in poco tempo. Attualmente è disponibile nella configurazione 8/128 Gb da noi consigliata a un prezzo di Euro 279 comprensivo degli auricolari Oppo Enco 2 direttamente sull’e-commerce del produttore. Un esborso economico che a nostro avviso permette al nuovo A78 5G di essere perfettamente in competizione con altri device di questa categoria. A78 5G può vantare un’autonomia da primato, buone e stabili prestazioni, un design e una qualità costruttiva che gli permette di essere in posizione predominante e un software maturo, completo e ben seguito dal produttore con aggiornamenti costanti. Ottima anche la presenza del supporto 5G, dell’audio stereo e del jack da 3.5mm, mentre il comparto fotocamera è da giudicarsi adeguato alla categoria di appartenenza, senza infamia e senza lode. Vanno invece accettati dei compromessi nel display, che ha risoluzione solo HD+ e nel motorino della vibrazione.

The Oppo A78 5G battery provided excellent autonomy when tested in factory default mode. The device’s charge lasted almost three days when used moderately, and on-the-go performance was excellent. When testing usage separately, autonomy was closer to the average. The device showed good results when streaming videos in 4G and during idle time. However, autonomy when calling or listening to music was only average, compared with the excellent results when tested in factory default mode. Charging the battery to full capacity took 1 hour and 34 minutes, which was slightly longer than average. A quick 5-minute charge provided 4.5 hours of autonomy, only 10 minutes more than our database average. Moreover, when the device indicated 100% of battery level, the real battery capacity was closer to 93%, which could impact the user experience. The charger efficiency tipped to just below our database average, but the adapter efficiency was a bit above average. The residual consumption of the charger was average, too. Discharge currents were low during our typical usage scenario and when streaming videos in 4G, meaning that the device is well-optimized for these use cases. However, the discharge currents when gaming or watching videos in Wi-Fi or airplane mode were higher than average. Compared with devices from the same range price ($200 – $399), the Oppo A78 5G ranked above average in our database. It showed excellent autonomy in factory default mode, but the charging and efficiency scores were just below average.

So overall, the OPPO A78 5G is priced at RM1,099. I can only describe it with one word – expensive. I mean, in the sea of smartphones that are available in the market now, I can’t find anything that makes this phone stand out from the others that can justify this price tag. The Oppo A78 5G is a decent smartphone, but the company has made some compromises to keep the device relatively affordable. The biggest compromise is the LCD display, which I feel should change in 2023. An AMOLED display, even with a 90Hz refresh rate, would have been a better choice and given it an edge over rivals. Its cameras are somewhat better than the Redmi Note 12's triple cameras, and the Dimensity 700 SoC offers reliable performance, thanks to 8GB RAM. However, the latter packs a much better display, where all the action happens. Otherwise, both devices come with a 5,000mAh battery and the 33W charging is a plus. My suggestion would be that if the price of the Oppo A78 5G drops to Rs 15,999, it's worth considering. Even at Rs 16,999, it is a decent choice, but the competition at this price gets stiffer. Otherwise, it may be worth waiting for new launches from Samsung and other OEMs, which isn't far away. I am sure Oppo has surprises for us.

A fronte di un prezzo di listino di 349,99 euro, per la versione da noi provata da 8 GB di RAM e 256 GB di archivio interno, al momento è possibile trovare l’OPPO A79 5G in offerta su Amazon al prezzo di 239 euro o sul sito del produttore al prezzo di 239,99 euro, (in offerta ancora per qualche giorno).

Concludiamo la recensione di OPPO A79 5G con parole che potrebbero sembrare di circostanza, ma che non vogliono esserlo: questo è uno smartphone dal costo discretamente contenuto, a cui corrispondono prestazioni di pari livello. La verità è che in questa fascia di mercato gli smart si assomigliano un po’ tutti e trovare delle differenze che siano davvero significative risulta piuttosto complicato. Il vero problema è che non esiste un solo dettaglio in cui questo smartphone riesca a spiccare rispetto alla concorrenza, non abbiamo nemmeno una appiglio per trovare un contesto in cui si possa dire che le sue caratteristiche sono migliori di quelle della concorrenza. In tutta onestà, è davvero complicato suggerire l’acquisto di questo smartphone piuttosto che di uno dei molteplici modelli di xiaomi redmi oggi in circolazione.

Oppo A79 5G viene proposto ad un prezzo di 199 euro nella variante 4/128 (che è sconsigliabile a causa dei soli 4GB di RAM) e 239 euro nella variante 8/256GB su Amazon. Sono cifre in linea con quella che è attualmente la fascia medio-bassa, un po’ meno se consideriamo la spietata concorrenza di Redmi, Poco e Honor. Purtroppo A79 5G non brilla in nessun ambito ed è un prodotto estremamente anonimo. Funziona bene, non ha problemi o bug, ma non emerge e si perde nell’oceano di dispositivi dimenticabili che affollano il mercato, ancora una volta, ed è un peccato perché Oppo è un’azienda che ha le qualità per offrire prodotti decisamente migliori.

Mi ha convito questo Oppo A79 5G? No, non a questo prezzo e con l’attuale concorrenza. Sottolineo che quando dico “prezzo“, non mi riferisco a quello di listino, perché è chiaro che a 299,99€ sia fuori mercato, ma parlo proprio dell’attuale street price di circa 240€ per il taglio 8+256GB su Amazon. Oppo A79 5G non spicca ed appare come l’ennesimo anonimo medio gamma. I pochi aspetti positivi, quali un ampio display, una buona autonomia o un design gradevole, non sono sue esclusive ma caratteristiche ormai comuni negli smartphone di fascia medio bassa. Il consiglio che posso dare ad Oppo è quello di centrare meglio i suoi prodotti a livello di prezzo e offrire smartphone più bilanciati, che non puntino tutto sul design.

Not every phone has to be a flagship, and not everyone needs an advanced “bells and whistles” device. Some people prefer a simple model that works quickly and allows them to take decent photos from time to time. Models like the OPPO A79 are created for such individuals. HOWEVER! Models like the A79 should cost around $180-200! But for $410, there are competitors offering AMOLED screens, faster processors, better camera setups, higher quality photos, and better sound (for example, the POCO X5 5G, POCO M6 Pro, Moto G54 5G, Moto G72, Motorola Edge 30 Neo, Redmi Note 13, Redmi Note 12S, Honor Magic5 Lite, realme C67, realme 10 and the list goes on). Not to mention the charger and case included in the package, which OPPO lacks. The hero of the review may stand out only in terms of design, but are there really few slim smartphones with interestingly designed back panels nowadays?

And so, that’s it. That’s all you need to know about the OPPO A79 5G. For the price of RM1,199, I do think that it is a bit pricey for what it offers and that camera is just… rough. If you’re okay with MIUI then maybe consider getting the Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G. I’m not sure if we did a review of that phone since their naming scheme is just way too confusing and it’s impossible to keep track. Soltanto i giochi datasi possono essere giocati in modo fluido con questi chips grafici (se non richiedono troppe prestazioni). I cores con memoria grafica condivisa in questa categoria hanno il vantaggio delle minori emissioni di calore e della maggiore autonomia della batteria. Per ufficio, internet, image processing, e video editing queste schede grafiche sono utilizzabili senza particolari problematiche.

ARM Mali-T860 MP2:

Qualcomm Adreno 610:

Scheda grafica integrata (nello Snapdragon 665) basata sull'architettura Adreno 600. Le prestazioni della GPU sono comprese tra l'Adreno 510 e il 512/612 e quindi nella fascia medio-bassa. Supporta DirectX11_1, Vulkan 1.0, OpenCL 2.0, OpenGL ES 3.2.

Qualcomm Adreno 619:

Scheda grafica integrata (nello Snapdragon 750G) basata sull'architettura Adreno 600. Le prestazioni sono molto meglio della vecchia Adreno 612.

ARM Mali-G57 MP2:

Scheda grafica integrata di gamma media con 2 cluster. Basata sull'architettura Valhall.

La maggior parte dei giochi attuali può essere giocata in modo fluido. Ma preparatevi ad una riduzione delle presentazioni grafiche considerando le impostazioni di dettaglio basse e la risoluzione limitata. Tuttavia, queste schede forniscono ancora abbastanza potenza per le applicazioni da ufficio e la proiezioni di video (ma non per i video HD).

Scheda grafica integrata a medio raggio con 3 cluster. Basata sull'architettura Valhall.

Queste schede grafiche per portatili non sono adatte al gaming. Anche se dovessero funzionare, ci sarebbero diversi errori grafici e un frame rate molto basso. Questi chips non sono affatto per i gamers! Applicazioni internet e da ufficio, invece non sono problematiche per queste GPUs.
