I’ll go further and say it’s the most competent multi-purpose laptop for around £1,000 that you can buy. There’s nothing it can’t do. Demanding productivity? Check. Excellent media playback? Check. Decent Triple-A gaming performance? Check. The fact that all that ability is wrapped up in a smart aluminium body with a great keyboard and ample opportunities to upgrade post-purchase are just the cherries on the cake. While a redeeming factor can be found in the reasonable $700 price tag, I would much rather opt for a laptop with better performance specs in lieu of the clunky 2-in-1 capabilities offered by the Dell Inspiron 14. As a master of none, the Inspiron 14 fails to satisfy any area of productivity, gaming, or media enjoyment. If the 2-in-1 functionality is non-negotiable, and you can find it on sale, the Inspiron 14 may be a worthwhile purchase. Otherwise, I would recommend steering clear and spending your money elsewhere. Dell's Inspiron 14 2-in-1 tries to do too many things at once. In its efforts, it falls short of establishing itself as a satisfactory productivity machine, gaming laptop, or 2-in-1 tablet. It has a few redeeming qualities, like a springy keyboard and a sleek design, but they can't save the Inspiron 14 from being spread too thin.

It’s an odd coincidence that the last laptop I reviewed, the Lenovo Flex 5i 14, was almost identical in its overall value and received a very similar review. Sure, you’ll get competent productivity performance from the Inspiron 14 2-in-1 and great battery life. Those are major plusses in its favor. Even without that concession, the Dell Inspiron 14 Plus is a remarkably well rounded system. In just about every category, it’s decent at worst. And in most departments, it’s better than the competition. It may not be as pretty as a ZenBook or Pavilion Plus, but it’s faster and lasts longer. And even if it’s no ThinkPad or XPS, it’s so much cheaper. Even with the Acer Swift Go 14 offering a lot of the same aspects, I’d never trade the Dell Inspiron 14 Plus’s keyboard for one from Acer. The fact that you can get a system this well rounded for $1,000 (and I’ve even seen it for $850 already) is a huge boon for PC shoppers looking for a no-nonsense, machine that’s all together excellent.
