Sure, the Flex 5 isn't perfect. The display isn't nearly as bright as I'd like, although it's fine for regular indoor use. Also, the pen storage design is just not good. I don't want to call it terrible because there are worse ways of doing it, but it's annoying. You have to remove the pen just to press the power button or to plug in a peripheral. And the thing is, the pen is docked exactly when I want to plug in a peripheral, when I'm at my desk.

The Lenovo Flex 5G is a device hindered by compromises. The laptop hardware itself is fine, but not as spiffy or appealing as a $1,499 laptop should be. Lenovo’s display is great inside, but falters outdoors due to the glossy glass. While the keyboard is excellent, and augmented by truly useful shortcut keys, the touchpad is average and the ports are limited. Performance is where the Flex 5G really shines. The Snapdragon 8cx chewed through all my productivity apps with ease, and battery life is absolutely out of this world. 5G speeds were excellent, though Verizon’s signal is hardly ubiquitous. This performance, however, is offset by the lack of support for 64-bit x86 apps.

So, the Intel version of this laptop is having a lot of struggles. The most prominent one comes from the cooling solution – especially when you have the GeForce MX330 onboard. During gaming (and with the “Extreme performance” profile applied) we saw the temperatures to not only creep up but maintain at 93C on the GPU and 97C on the processor. And if you choose the more forgiving “Intelligent cooling” profile, you end up losing performance. By the way, introducing a cooling pad drastically improves the thermals of the notebooks, as it appears that the design of the device is not optimized for airflow. So, at the end of the day, it might just be a better choice to pick the Intel Core i7-1065G7 only with its integrated graphics. Or just go for the AMD options, as they will provide a lot more headroom for productivity.

Lenovo ha realizzato una macchina che eccelle sul fronte del processore, soprattutto per la fascia di prezzo in cui è collocato, ma con alcuni punti deboli, primo fra tutti il display. Chi è in cerca di una CPU potente a un prezzo inferiore ai 1000 euro troverà nel Ryzen 7 4700U un ottimo alleato, la proposta di AMD è valida per tutti gli usi, anche quelli più impegnativi, e riesce a offrire una buona potenza anche sul fronte della GPU se ci si accontenta. Peccato per l’assenza di una versione con 16 GB di RAM, non presente a listino, ma in questo momento non abbiamo trovato nemmeno la variante da noi testata disponibile all’acquisto. Con l’arrivo dei nuovi Ryzen 5000 per notebook speriamo che la situazione migliori, nel frattempo siamo fiduciosi che anche i Ryzen 4000 riescano a raggiungere una disponibilità più corposa, perché le prestazioni che offrono confermano ancora una volta la bontà dell’architettura Zen 2.

IdeaPad Flex 5 è uno di quei rari notebook in grado di accontentare chiunque: dallo studente, al lavoratore, a chi voglia semplicemente svagarsi, anche con un po' di videogiochi. Il merito del suo essere tuttofare è da ricercarsi nell'ottimo AMD Ryzen 7 4700U, un processore in grado di tenere testa gli i7 di decima generazione Intel, siano essi Comet Lake o Ice Lake. E per rendere il tutto ancor più completo, Lenovo ha inserito in confezione anche uno stylus, ideale per prendere appunti e sottolineare, più che per disegnare. Dulcis in fundo, un'autonomia che vi porterà alla fine della giornata lavorativa ed un prezzo che è la metà di quello che costano certi ultrabook Intel Inside di pari fascia. Certo, c'è da fare qualche rinuncia qua e là, soprattutto nel display, altrimenti staremmo parlando del convertibile perfetto, ma siamo sicuri che alla maggior parte degli utenti andrà bene così.

Ladies and gents, today, we introduced you to a beastly little convertible called the IdeaPad Flex 5 (14″, 2022). Although it was equipped with an older AMD processor, we can’t say that it was a failure. Quite the opposite in fact. Its fantastic dual-heat-pipe cooling solution produced a heroic and managed to give the Ryzen 5 5500U (in our case) the maximum possible headroom we’ve ever seen. And we’ve tested this processor with substantially bigger laptops too. Unfortunately, its memory is soldered to the motherboard, which is not great for future-proofing your laptop. Another nail in the imaginary coffin of this device is the 16GB maximum configuration. Yes, this is plenty, but there is no guarantee that you won’t need 32GB for something a bit more intensive in the future. Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 (14″, 2022)’s IPS panel has a WUXGA resolution, comfortable viewing angles, and a good contrast ratio. Its backlight doesn’t use PWM for brightness adjustment, which is great. However, it covers only 54% of the sRGB color gamut, which essentially means that you miss half of the colors found on the Web. In addition, the glossy surface makes it pretty hard to work outdoors, as the maximum brightness is not high enough to compensate. Obviously, there is the 100% sRGB option you can pick, but its maximum brightness is still pegged at 300 nits. What is not limited, though, is the use of SD cards. Yes, this convertible has an SD card reader. This makes it great for photographers, who can edit their pictures on the go. Well, if they are willing to sacrifice color grading (in the case of our configuration’s display). At the end of the day, the laptop is really comfortable to use. Its keyboard and touchpad are good, but its dedicated Pen is amazing. For one, it sits as a further turn-on for the photographers we just mentioned.

With the AMD Ryzen 5000 hardware inside, the Flex 5 is one of the most powerful 14-inch budget laptops you can get right now. It's also a convertible and doesn't compromise on the build quality, inputs, audio, IO, or battery life, but it does come with one major deal-breaker: a dim and washed-out display with a 60% sRGB panel. That's just not for me and I'd rather pay extra or even sacrifice on the performance just to get a usable display instead. As far as affordable laptops go, the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 is a good choice. While the dim display is disappointing, it was a joy using this laptop. I had no problems surfing the web no matter how many tabs were open, and I could rely on the long battery life to keep me entertained throughout the day. And while it’s made mostly of plastic, the Flex 5 still looks and feels like a sleek, sturdy device that’s well worth the investment. That is if you can find it in stock. Unfortunately, Lenovo appears to have discontinued this laptop, and pricing from third-party retailers varies wildly. If you’re not into hunting down your preferred configuration or can't find a good deal on the Flex 5, check out the similarly priced HP Envy 13 x360.

Lenovo's IdeaPad Flex 5i 14 is exactly the sort of 2-in-1 convertible you'd expect from the company that pioneered this category. It's a sensible machine that's pleasing to use as a conventional laptop, or propped up for a presentation in easel or tent mode. The chassis is well-engineered, even if it's not the sleekest or lightest around. And the processing power is decent, thanks in large part to the generous 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSD of our test unit. You can do better if you venture north of $1,000—our top premium 2-in-1 pick is the HP Spectre x360 14, while the ThinkBook 14s Yoga is great for small and medium businesses. Overall, the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i 14-inch is well-built, easily handled with a comfortable keyboard and a bright screen, and relatively capable for its price. You certainly wouldn’t use it as a PC gamer—but for general office work, it offers enough performance. The screen is a bit of a wild card, since we tested 400 nits, while Lenovo only promises 300, and the color coverage could use a boost. Still, if you’re a general student or at-home worker (who isn’t these days?), this could be a smart pick. If you want a better display for a couple hundred dollars more, check out the Lenovo Yoga 7i. If you yearn for faster performance as well as a better screen, consider the Acer Spin 5. But, for someone who just wants a modestly priced, versatile, and easily moved convertible for office tasks, internet browsing and webcam sessions, look to the Flex 5i retail version.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" dalla leggenda inglese, novo (latino) per nuovo) è stata fondata nel 1984 come società cinese di commercio di computer. Nel 2004, l'azienda era il più grande produttore di laptop in Cina e, dopo aver acquisito la divisione PC di IBM nel 2005, il quarto più grande al mondo. Oltre a desktop e notebook, l'azienda produce monitor, proiettori, server, ecc. ed è specializzata nello sviluppo, produzione e commercializzazione di elettronica di consumo, personal computer, software, soluzioni aziendali e servizi correlati.

Nel 2016, l'azienda si è classificata al primo posto al mondo nelle vendite di computer. Lo deteneva ancora nel 2023 con una quota di mercato globale di circa il 23%. Importanti linee di prodotti sono Thinkpad, Legion e Ideapad.
