HP appears to have adopted the 'almost' Apple-esque integrated touchpad buttons first seen on the Envy 15, which were far from a resounding success. Hopefully it has ironed out the issues now: we'll see. Moreover, if HP is to go down this route we'd have preferred to see it add the much more impressive four point multi-touch, single click touchpad that Synaptics recently introduced.

It continues to be a real shame that the one real issue we have with HP's laptops continues to be something we consider to be fairly standard and simple technology these days. Honestly, we don't need anything fancy when it comes to a touchpad -- just a large pad and two comfortable buttons. Other than its flaky navigation input, the $904 system – though it's a bit overpriced compared to the competition -- packs just the right balance of style, power and endurance. We much prefer the dm4's aesthetic to comparable systems like Dell's Inspiron 15 and Gateway's offerings. But of course, at the end of the day what good is all that if you can't push the cursor from one side of the screen without a problem?

Its graphics performance notwithstanding, the HP Pavilion dm4-1265dx is a great little mainstream laptop for the money. Its aluminum finish is both protective and stylish, and its productivity and multimedia performance rivals that of its more costly competition. A Blu-ray drive would be a welcome addition though, as would a discrete GPU. For a more robust graphics solution, the Asus U41JF-A1 is a better choice, but it'll cost you about $200 more.

Students should take a close look at the HP dm4x laptop as an option for use as an important academic tool. It’s got everything you need for your academic computing needs and then some nice extras. First of all the design is very appealing so fashion conscious students will approve. It’s not just a pretty face though, the dm4x is built with sturdy metal materials and beneath the hood the second generation Intel Core i5 processor will provide more than enough power to tackle multi-tasking, frequent application switching and smooth video playback. An option for dedicated graphics with 1GB of memory can make the dm4x a good choice for engineering students as well. Most importantly for students this laptop is very portable, weighing in at 4.3lbs, and the battery life of about 6 hours on a standard battery is enough to last through a few lectures without being plugged in. If you need more battery life there are battery upgrade options, something you don’t get with other laptops such as the Apple MacBook Pro. Finally, the price in the mid $700’s is a very good one for what you get with the dm4x. HP: Fondata nel 1939, l'azienda statunitense è un importante produttore di server e stampanti e una delle aziende IT leader a livello mondiale. Fino al 2015, la società si chiamava Hewlett-Packard Company. Dopo una scissione, la divisione computer è stata ribattezzata HP Inc.
Nel 2023, HP deteneva una quota di mercato approssimativa del 22% delle vendite globali di PC, diventando così il numero 2 dopo Lenovo.
Soltanto i giochi datasi possono essere giocati in modo fluido con questi chips grafici (se non richiedono troppe prestazioni). I cores con memoria grafica condivisa in questa categoria hanno il vantaggio delle minori emissioni di calore e della maggiore autonomia della batteria. Per ufficio, internet, image processing, e video editing queste schede grafiche sono utilizzabili senza particolari problematiche.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics:
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5450: Una scheda grafica base che gestisce DirectX 11 con una velocità clock simile (come le prestazioni) alla HD 4570 ma con un consumo di energia inferiore.
AMD Radeon HD 6370M: Una vecchia HD 5470 rinominata con 80 processori shader e supporto DirectX11.
Intel HD Graphics 3000: 3 imminenti (Q1 2011) schede grafiche integrate nel processore Intel Sandy Bridge (Core ix-2xxx). La 3000 / 200 è la versione più veloce internamente chiamata GT2 con 12 Execution Units (EUs).
La maggior parte dei giochi attuali può essere giocata in modo fluido. Ma preparatevi ad una riduzione delle presentazioni grafiche considerando le impostazioni di dettaglio basse e la risoluzione limitata. Tuttavia, queste schede forniscono ancora abbastanza potenza per le applicazioni da ufficio e la proiezioni di video (ma non per i video HD).
AMD Radeon HD 7470M: Si basa sul vecchio chip Seymore XT e di conseguenza si tratta di una versione rinominata della Radeon HD 6490M (forse con un clock rate leggermente modificato).
AMD Radeon HD 6470M: Scheda grafica di fascia medio-bassa basata sul Seymore XT e che sfrutta il processore video UVD3.

Intel Core i5:
430M: Il Core i5-430M è una CPU dual core di media classe che sfrutta solo 3 MB di L3 Cache (rispetto alla I7-640M) ed ha un clock tra 2.26-2.53 GHz (Turbo Mode). Inoltre, nella 430M mancano VT-d, trusted Execution e funzioni AES. Grazie all'Hyperthreading, possono essere gestiti 4 threads contemporaneamente. Nel pacchetto sono incluse anche una scheda grafica integrata (Intel HD Graphics da 500-733 MHz) ed un controller memoria DDR3.
450M: Dovrebbe essere simile alla Core i5-520M ma senza funzioni AES.
460M: L'Intel Core i5-460M è una CPU dual core di fascia alta per portatili ed ha un clock (grazie al Turbo Mode) da 2.53 a 2.8 GHz. Ogni core si basa sulla micro architettura Nehalem (Westemere). L'hyperthreading consente alla CPU Dual Core di gestire 4 threads contemporaneamente (per un miglior utilizzo della pipeline).
2410M: Processore dual-core basato sulla architettura Sandy Bridge con una scheda grafica integrata ed un controller di memoria dual-channel DDR3. La CPU ha un clock da 2.3 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.6-2.9 GHz) e la GPU da 650 (1200 MHz Turbo).
2430M: Processore Dual-core basato sull'architettura Sandy Bridge con una scheda grafica integrata ed un controller di memoria dual-channel DDR3. La CPU ha un clock da 2.4 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.7-3 GHz) e la GPU da 650 (1200 MHz Turbo).
2450M: Processore Dual-core basato sull'architettura Sandy Bridge con una scheda grafica integrata ed un controller di memoria dual-channel DDR3. La CPU ha un clock da 2.5 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.8-3.1 GHz) e la GPU da 650 (1300 MHz Turbo).
Intel Core i3:
2310M: Processore dual-core basato sull'architettura Sandy Bridge con una scheda grafica integrata ed un controller di memoria dual-channel DDR3. La CPU ha un clock da 2.1 GHz e sfrutta il Turbo Boost 2.0 solo per la scheda grafica (650/1100MHz).
2330M: Processore dual-core basato sull'architettura basato Sandy Bridge con scheda grafica integrata ed un controller di memoria dual-channel DDR3. La CPU ha un clock da 2.2 GHz e sfrutta il Turbo Boost 2.0 solo per la scheda grafica (650/1100MHz).
