EN→IT Archive.org versionFor $1799, the Dell XPS 17 (1710X) is a grand deal. You get lots of RAM, plenty of hard drive space, and most importantly, heaps of CPU and graphics grunt. We like the fact that modern ports such as DisplayPort and USB 3.0 are standard and that it has a built-in digital TV tuner and Blu-ray drive, but we lament the lack of a remote control and an ExpressCard slot. Furthermore, we think that the touchscreen isn't really that useful.

Dell: Dell è un produttore statunitense (con sede in Texas) di hardware per computer fondato nel 1984 ed è uno dei maggiori produttori internazionali sia in termini di quota di mercato che di modelli di notebook. La sua linea di prodotti comprende desktop, notebook, sistemi di archiviazione, monitor, server, stampanti, elettronica di consumo e periferiche. Dell offre laptop adatti a varie applicazioni, come laptop aziendali, laptop da gioco, ultra portatili e workstation. I laptop aziendali Dell delle serie Latitude e Precision sono un'opzione per utenti professionali e aziende.
Nel 2023, Dell deteneva una quota di mercato di circa il 17% delle vendite globali di PC, classificandosi al terzo posto dopo Lenovo e HP.
Per gli appassionati di giochi, il marchio Alienware di Dell è per i notebook da gioco.
Ridurre la distanza delle Schede Grafiche per gli utenti che vogliono utilizzare il videogiochi. I nuovi giochi dovrebbero funzionare su queste schede, ma con riduzione dei dettagli e risoluzione mediocre.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 445M: Scheda basata sul GF106 con appena 144 Shaders, e diversa banda di memoria da 128 e 192 Bit in base alla RAM grafica utilizzata.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M: Successore della GeForce GT 445M basata sullo stesso chip GF106 con un clock rate leggermente superiore e con supporto per DDR3 da 900MHz.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 550M: Scheda grafica con buone prestazioni per portatili, basata sulla vecchia serie 400M ma con supporto per DDR3 da 900MHz.
La maggior parte dei giochi attuali può essere giocata in modo fluido. Ma preparatevi ad una riduzione delle presentazioni grafiche considerando le impostazioni di dettaglio basse e la risoluzione limitata. Tuttavia, queste schede forniscono ancora abbastanza potenza per le applicazioni da ufficio e la proiezioni di video (ma non per i video HD).

Intel Core i7:
740QM: Il Core i7-740QM è una CPU quad-core di fascia alta per portatili (nel 2010) con un clock rate di base relativamente contenuto ed una elevata frequenza massima di Turbo Boost di 2.93 GHz (per un core). Pertanto, combina i vantaggi delle veloci CPUs single core e delle lente CPUs quad-core. Rispetto alle più veloci CPUs Core i7 mobile, la 740QM ha solo 6MB di L3 Cache.
840QM: Il Core i7-840QM è una CPU quad core di fascia alta per portatili che ha clocks grazie al Turbo Mode da 1.86-3.2 GHz. Di conseguenza, il processore combina i vantaggi delle veloci CPUs single core e delle lente CPUs quad-core. L'Hyperthreading consente un utilizzo simultaneo di 8 Threads in parallelo.
2630QM: Veloce processore Quad-core basato sulla architettura Sandy Bridge con scheda grafica integrata e controller di memoria dual-channel DDR3.
2670QM: Veloce processore quad-core con clock da 2.2-3.1 GHz basato sull'architettura Sandy Bridge con una scheda grafica integrata ed un controller di memoria dual-channel DDR3.
Intel Core i5:
460M: L'Intel Core i5-460M è una CPU dual core di fascia alta per portatili ed ha un clock (grazie al Turbo Mode) da 2.53 a 2.8 GHz. Ogni core si basa sulla micro architettura Nehalem (Westemere). L'hyperthreading consente alla CPU Dual Core di gestire 4 threads contemporaneamente (per un miglior utilizzo della pipeline).
2410M: Processore dual-core basato sulla architettura Sandy Bridge con una scheda grafica integrata ed un controller di memoria dual-channel DDR3. La CPU ha un clock da 2.3 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.6-2.9 GHz) e la GPU da 650 (1200 MHz Turbo).

Normalmente i portatili con diagonale da 17” pesano di più. Il peso è un po' eccessivo per un portatile da 15” ma accettabile per dispositivi destinati ad un utilizzo stazionario.
4 kg:
Questo peso è tipico per portatili desktop-replacement con displays da 17” con scarso utilizzo mobile.
