Rispondiamo infine alla domanda con cui si concludeva l'introduzione di questo articolo: no, non si sentiva decisamente il bisogno di questo ROG Phone 6D Ultimate, nel senso che le differenze con il modello originale uscito appena due mesi fa appaiono davvero troppo limitate per giustificare questa nuova uscita sul mercato dell'azienda di Taipei. I due dispositivi hanno performance talmente simili che si fa fatica persino a indicare ad un potenziale acquirente una ragione valida per preferire l'uno o l'altro modello, se non riducendosi a una mera questione di tifo tra Qualcomm e MediaTek. Messe da parte queste considerazioni, ROG Phone 6D Ultimate rimane comunque il gaming phone più potente e completo attualmente disponibile sul mercato, e per quella nicchia di utenti disposti a spendere 1499€ per avere il top di gamma assoluto non c'è molto altro da dire.

Recensione ROG Phone 6D Ultimate: la vera innovazione è l'AeroActive Portal

ROG Phone 6D Ultimate non è di certo uno smartphone per tutti, e non vuole convincere un pubblico di grandi dimensioni. È uno dispositivo di nicchia, pensato per utenti a cui piace personalizzare ogni minima opzione alla ricerca delle prestazioni più elevate che hardware e software possono esprimere insieme. Al contempo non è il solito smartphone gaming, con una delle sue peculiarità principali che costringe all'uso di un accessorio che, anche se fornito in dotazione, rende lo smartphone estremamente voluminoso e scomodo da utilizzare con applicazioni e giochi sviluppati per essere fruiti in verticale. Ci riferiamo al connubio AeroActive Portal + AeroActive Cooler 6 che, a nostro avviso, sono le vere peculiarità del nuovo device della serie ROG Phone, ancor più di Dimensity 9000+. Sebbene sia più veloce lato CPU rispetto allo Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, il nuovo processore non offre grandi rivoluzioni sul campo della GPU, componente che conta di più nel gaming ad alti livelli. La vera innovazione è invece nel Portal che, aprendosi alla bisogna quando si applica il Cooler 6, consente di ottenere un livello di dissipazione termica letteralmente mai visto su smartphone. Anche se di soluzioni con dissipazione attiva ne esistevano già, quella di ROG Phone 6D Ultimate è certamente la più efficace e a nostro avviso l'unica che porta a compimento a dovere il suo obiettivo. ROG Phone 6D Ultimate è l'unico smartphone gaming (e non) che abbiamo provato negli ultimi anni capace di garantire prestazioni elevatissime senza surriscaldare mai in maniera fastidiosa, neanche dopo lunghe sessioni con titoli tripla A. Lo ripetiamo, per riuscirci ha bisogno di un accessorio che non fa della comodità il suo punto di forza e che "il gamer" deve portar dietro sempre con sé.

Noi non troviamo un motivo per consigliarvi questo modello piuttosto di quello Snapdragon. Il sistema AeroActive Portal è incredibilmente ben ingegnerizzato, ma sospettiamo che sia figlio anche della necessità dettata da una CPU così estrema.

The Asus ROG Phone 6D Ultimate is another unapologetically niche phone with a laserlike focus on gaming performance. Like the Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro, it excels in all the ways that matter, with a big, responsive display, top-tier performance, and a long-lasting battery. Asus’s bundled-in cooling fan ramps up the performance factor further, as well as adding useful physical gaming controls. The camera isn’t the best, which is par for the course in a gaming phone, but even here, Asus has managed to include a perfectly decent main sensor. The trouble with the 6D Ultimate is that pretty much everything I just said about the phone was also true of the 6 Pro. The only differences are a new cooling port, accessed through the fan, which is fairly superfluous in practical terms, and a new processor that works out to be equal to the 6 Pro’s, on balance. It’s also far more difficult to justify a purchase of the ROG Phone 6D Ultimate following the launch of the newer ROG Phone 7 Ultimate, which flaunts a faster performance. But I’m expecting the 6D Ultimate to get a significant price drop, which should make it a far more alluring gaming phone option.

Having used this device, there’s no denying that it’s powerful. The MediaTek Dimensity 9000 Plus is really powerful in the computational department, but the GPU is where it seems to falter in comparison to the competition. I was surprised at how much this device struggled with The Simpsons: Hit & Run when I’ve had nothing but good experiences previously with this generation of chipsets. However, it did a great job with Genshin Impact. Whether it’s Asus’ implementation or the chipset itself I’m not sure, but nevertheless, it’s hard to say that this phone lives up to the “Ultimate” moniker. If anything, I feel like this phone should have been posited as an alternative edition of the 6 Pro, kind of like how the OPPO Find X5 Pro Dimensity Edition launched in China. “Ultimate” implies better when I think it’s more of a sidegrade between some of the downgrades and upgrades. There are benefits to both devices. Superior battery life and emulation performance go to the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1, whereas the Dimensity 9000 Plus is an arguably more powerful chipset overall thanks to the beefed-up CPU and nearly-on-par GPU.

From our early impressions, these have all functioned rather well, although it’s too soon for us to give a final verdict. However, I will also be keeping a keen eye on how some of the gaming-adjacent features stack up; for instance, whether the camera is worthy of such an expensive device, and how intuitive the software will be to use for all purposes. We were certainly impressed with the Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro, so I am hoping that this highly similar handset can confidently follow in its footsteps.

So, this is the ROG Phone 6D Ultimate… as powerful, as ridiculously overkill as you might expect. Is it better than the ROG Phone 6 Pro? We kind of… don’t feel like it is. It’s just as good, don’t get us wrong, but we couldn’t really feel a measurable improvement… an “Ultra-ness” if you will. However, gamers want what they want and we are pretty sure that some will love the new AeroActive Portal and the LPDDR5X module, even if it’s just for bragging rights. We did not find the MediaTek chip to be inferior in any way in real-life use and if we had to choose whether we want to use the ROG Phone 6D Ultimate or ROG Phone 6 Pro — we’d honestly just throw a dart. Or just choose between Space Gray and Storm White. Now, the 6D Ultimate does come with an AeroActive 6 cooler bundled in, so if the package price is lower than buying the ROG Phone 6 Pro and the fan separately, we’d recommend the Ultra. Simply because we find the ROG Phone experience to be at its best when you have the cooler as well. And, of course, some markets in the world will only get one or the other.

If it has been Asus' strategy to diversify the chip supplier and have an equally good ROG phone made with MediaTek silicon, well, they've succeeded. We don't think anyone would notice the subtle differences between the two phones. It's impressive to think that MediaTek is closing the gap on Qualcomm when it comes to flagship chipset performance. But the extra overclocking and cooling ingenuity it took on Asus' part also highlighted that the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipsets remain class-leading. MediaTek won't be breathing on Qualcomm's neck just yet - at least not this year. With all the extra work that Asus has put into making the ROG Phone 6D Ultimate, we'd say users will be happy with either flagship ROG phone. You might have your preference, but we'd say - go for whichever is more easily available near you or with whichever one is cheaper. They are both really good.

L'ARM Mali-G710MC10 è una scheda grafica integrata di fascia alta per smartphone con 10 dei 16 core possibili. Si basa sulla terza generazione dell'architettura Valhall di ARM che offre un 20% in più di prestazioni ed efficienza energetica rispetto alla generazione precedente. Nella Dimensity 9000, la G710 è prodotta nel moderno processo a 4nm.

Ridurre la distanza delle Schede Grafiche per gli utenti che vogliono utilizzare il videogiochi. I nuovi giochi dovrebbero funzionare su queste schede, ma con riduzione dei dettagli e risoluzione mediocre.
