75% Recensione Asus Zenfone 11 (Ultra): tutto nuovo ma sa di déjà vu

Zenfone 11 è semplicemente un Rog Phone 8 con una cover posteriore diversa, una sola Type-C e senza Air Trigger. Questo rende lo smartphone difficile da collocare: da acquirente, considerando un listino di 999€ per Zenfone 11 12/256GB e 1099€ per la stessa versione del Rog 8, opterei senza dubbio per il secondo. In promozione ci sono 100€ di taglio prezzo e quindi Zenfone 11 Ultra 12/256GB costa 899€ ma è anche vero che pochi giorni fa anche Rog Phone 8 è stato in promo a meno di 1000€. Se a questo aggiungiamo una politica di aggiornamenti non lunga e un reparto fotocamere solo buono, è chiaro che se si hanno circa 1000€ di budget o si sceglie Rog perchè si vuole Asus, o si opta per una delle tante alternative di pari prezzo disponibili in questo 2024 (Samsung, Xiaomi, Honor per fare giusto tre esempi).

È uno smartphone che si fa apprezzare nel quotidiano, con un prezzo giusto, anche se in un mercato sempre più affollato. Ha perso però un po' di "anima" rispetto a Zenfone 10 e sugli aggiornamenti ancora si potrebbe fare meglio.

ASUS fa inaspettatamente un deciso cambio di rotta e abbandona, almeno per il momento, il segmento degli smartphone compatti in favore di uno prodotto più canonico rispetto al mercato. Aggiunge al nome la nomenclatura Ultra per differenziarlo meglio e questo mantiene un barlume di speranza che possa arrivare, prima o poi, un ASUS Zenfone 11 compatto, vedremo. Tornando al protagonista di questa recensione, ASUS Zenfone 11 Ultra è un prodotto promosso a 360°, offre ottime prestazioni, un software snello ma arricchito anche di intelligenza artificiale on device, una costruzione solida e componenti hardware d’avanguardia, al tempo stesso ha un design che potrebbe non piacere a tutti per via di delle varie scelte stilistiche, e un comparto fotografico inferiore ai principali competitor. Rispetto al passato la sua sfida risiederà proprio qui, nell’affrontare i migliori smartphone sul mercato perdendo la distintività di prodotto compatto, eliminando così il principale vantaggio competitivo che aveva finora.

L'essere compatto era la sua essenza, adesso diventa uno dei tanti. Riesce comunque a distinguersi? Secondo me no e poi dipende da quello che voi ricercate in uno smartphone perché lui non è di quelli super equilibrati in tutto, ha delle sue debolezze e punti di forza. Questi ultimi sono sicuramente le prestazioni, il bel display a 144Hz (ma se volete queste due cose per giocare rimane migliore il ROG) e l'ottima autonomia. Pecca invece su ergonomia, comparto camere e aggiornamenti. Il prezzo però gli da un senso, soprattutto quello di lancio perché 899 euro per la versione 12/256 e 999 euro per la 16/512GB in effetti sono corretti ed inferiori agli altri top più completi. Finita la promo saliranno entrambe le versione di 100 euro.

Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra è disponibile in due configurazioni: la “base”, con 12 GB di RAM e 256 GB di storage, esce ad un prezzo di listino di 999 € con promo lancio a 899 €. Per la variante con 16 GB di RAM e 512 GB di storage sono richiesti 100 € in più. Tenendo conto di alcuni limiti, come l’assenza della e-SIM, un comparto fotografico che rispetto agli altri top è ancora un passo indietro ed anche la poca cura nel design e nei materiali sono oggettivamente troppi. Il suffisso “Ultra” sembra, purtroppo, non riscontrabile nella realtà dei fatti.

Picture lovers have a 50MP main camera on the back to snap highly detailed imagery, with a decent night mode for low-light moments in the evenings. If you're after a big screen and long battery life, this is the one for you. The Zenfone 11 Ultra is a very capable phone—super-fast, snappy, and with an amazingly bright screen. The real problem here is, at least the way we see it, that Asus has taken the ROG Phone 8 and streamlined it into a mainstream device. It's a valid marketing strategy. People do love big and fast phones but often feel reluctant to buy a "gaming" phone, so this might work. The thing is, while the previous Zenfone models were unique in the Android market due to their compact form factor, now the Taiwanese company has to compete with behemoths such as Samsung and Apple and fight off value propositions such as the OnePlus 12. It's not an easy gig to pull off. Pre-orders in the US are live now, early birds will get free Cetra TWS in-ear headphones in white with every order. US official sales channels are the ASUS eStore and Mobile Advance. Mobile Advance will also carry on the Amazon US marketplace, so you can get the Zenfone 11 Ultra through Amazon as well.

The Zenfone 11 Ultra uses the ROG Phone 8 as a foundation, and it retains the same chassis with a few tweaks. The design is minimalist, but you don't get much in the way of a unique identity — not surprising given it is a rebadged model. What you'll like more is the hardware; the Zenfone 11 Ultra has a large AMOLED panel that's terrific in daily use, it retains a 3.5mm jack and IP68 ingress protection, a large battery that lasts longer than just about any other device, and it is one of the fastest phones around. ASUS also made meaningful changes to its cameras, and the clean software is a delight to use. That said, the cameras aren't on the same level as other flagships, and ASUS's asinine software policy makes the Zenfone 11 Ultra a non-starter.

That’s a massive $300 bump for a phone that’s losing out on a lot of things compared to its predecessor. And that makes it challenging to recommend this phone.

I have no idea why you would really want to buy the Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra. I like Asus phones and usually take pleasure in recommending them, but in this instance, I genuinely think you should just buy the ROG Phone 8 Pro with its toned-down (but still cool) design and unobtrusive but useful gaming features. It’s the Zenfone 11 Ultra, just more interesting. But if you never play games, it would be a waste, and the trouble in this situation is the Zenfone 11 Ultra’s competitors are all much more compelling, often better looking, and come with longer software update commitments. Sadly, Asus hasn’t given you a real reason to buy the Zenfone 11 Ultra over them and has simply stripped back all the bits that make the ROG Phone 8 Pro fun and exciting to leave a rather forgettable phone.

This is an unusual review to write. There is no question that the Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra is a good phone. It's almost like the blueprint for an Android phone in 2024, and it's solid. With that being said, it doesn't really offer anything to get too excited about. The performance is good, though it can fall down under intense load. The camera is good, but has issues with over-sharpening. Ultimately, the biggest issue it's going to face is comparison to the Asus ROG Phone 8. Sure, these models run a little cheaper than the ROG range, but I'd wager that it probably isn't enough to steer people away – particularly when the ROG Phone has dialled down its gamer-centric design language. In short, this is a really capable handset which represents decent value in the current market. If you're a fan of the design – and want some really top-tier videography hardware – this should certainly be on your list.

It’s Big Android Phone season, because the Zenfone 11 Ultra arrives on the heels of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus, the S24 Ultra, and the OnePlus 12. They all use the same chipset (well, provided you buy the S24 Plus in the US) and not-a-one of them has a screen smaller than 6.7 inches. I can clearly recommend three out of four of these phones, but the Zenfone, I’m just not sure about. The Galaxy S24 Ultra is the obvious pick for someone who wants the absolute most out of their phone. The $799 OnePlus 12 is the right choice if you want a big screen and want to spend a little less. For everyone else, there’s the Galaxy S24 Plus — the crowd-pleaser that’s readily available with trade-in and carrier deals galore. The Zenfone just doesn’t earn a clear space for itself here. Maybe if it had an outstanding camera or it had better network support in the US or, I don’t know, a thoughtful form factor unlike anything else on the market.

After a slight delay, ASUS recorder app converts audio to text on-device and can use the cloud to generate audio summaries. Chinese, English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Japanese languages are supported. AI Call Translator works in a similar fashion, translating calls in real-time, on-device, for both you and the person on the other end, even if they don’t have a Zenfone. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to test this feature. We’ve seen ASUS’ other AI features before. AI Noise Cancellation works on a broader set of apps, such as Whatsapp or Telegram, reducing background noise for both incoming and outgoing audio.

Reviewing Asus' Zenfone 11 Ultra, a 6.8-inch super-sized smartphone sporting similar camera tech and specs to the ROG Phone 8. There's no compact version yet, only the Zenfone 11 Ultra - but is it a rival to the Samsung S24 Ultra, Pixel 8 Pro etc? Well, no, not really. It's considerably cheaper than the Galaxy, but as a package Google's flagship phone is better. For one, the camera on the Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra isn't as dependable when the lighting isn't great. I also prefer the design of the Pixel 8 phones. That said, Asus has nailed the performance here. Genshin Impact plays with a stable frame rate for hours at a time, while the Zenfone 11 Ultra keeps its cool. Plus, the battery life is excellent so you can keep going all day with no worries.

Chip grafico per smartphone e tablet integrato nel SoC Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Qualcomm afferma che è il 25% più veloce dell'Adreno 7340 nello Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 e i primi benchmark mostrano che la GPU può battere l'Apple A17 Pro iGPU.
