Apple starts selling Radeon Pro W6000 series MPX modules and confirms compatibility with existing Mac Pro machines

Radeon Pro W6000 series MPX modules are now available to order for existing Mac Pro machines. Unsurprisingly, the proprietary GPUs are expensive and are incompatible with some existing Mac Pro configurations.
Apple Desktop GPU

Last week, Apple announced new GPUs for the Mac Pro, all based on AMD's Navi 21 architecture. Initially, the company did not mention if these GPUs would be available separately, despite clearly being MPX modules. However, it has since updated support documents and listed them on its website.

Prices start at US$2,800 for the Radeon Pro W6800X and rise significantly for the Radeon Pro W6800X Duo and the Radeon Pro W6900X. Supposedly, the new GPUs deliver up to 84% better performance in Octane X than previous MPX modules, which is quite the leap. The company claims that Da Vinci Resolve should run 23% faster, too.

Unfortunately, the new Infinity Fabric Link bridges render the Radeon Pro W6000 series incompatible with older Radeon Pro MPX modules. Ultimately, the price and incompatibility of these modules probably mean that Apple will not be selling many of them, beyond those who need better rendering performance.
