Xiaomi 17 è uno di quegli smartphone che non hanno bisogno di puntare tutto su una singola caratteristica per convincere. La sua forza sta soprattutto nell’equilibrio. È compatto, maneggevole, ha un comparto fotografico credibile, prestazioni da vero flagship, un display molto riuscito e soprattutto un’autonomia che, per la categoria, ha quasi del sorprendente. In un mercato che sembra aver progressivamente abbandonato l’idea di un top di gamma davvero più umano nelle dimensioni, Xiaomi 17 si ritaglia uno spazio molto chiaro e potenzialmente molto interessante. Non è uno smartphone perfetto. Il software resta l’area in cui Xiaomi deve ancora rifinire davvero la propria identità premium, e anche il prezzo di listino lo colloca in una fascia in cui la concorrenza è fortissima e non concede margini di errore.

First up, you've got that beefy Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in charge. Gamers can play intensive titles like Wuthering Waves on the Xiaomi 17, same as the Samsung S26. However, this smartphone does get quite toasty, to worrying degrees. That Leica camera setup is a banger as always, with fresh hardware for this 2026 model (unlike the Galaxy S26). You can capture great-looking night shots and portraits, with a decent telephoto shooter attached. The Xiaomi 17 is also decent for recording video, if you want a mini vlogging device.

What Xiaomi can’t quite match is the software support terms. So if you’re planning to hold onto your phone for a long time, that could play into your decision. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Xiaomi 17; it has been great for gaming, content consumption, and photography alike. La batteria al silicio-carbonio dimostra quanto le case cinesi abbiano da insegnare ai competitor occidentali. Le dimensioni compatte sono una rarità preziosa nella fascia alta. I punti deboli ci sono e non vanno ignorati: l’elaborazione fotografica deve trovare una quadra, l’ultra-wide delude e il software in versione cinese comporta alcune rinunce. Il design che copia spudoratamente iPhone 17 Pro lascia perplessi per un’azienda che avrebbe tutte le capacità per distinguersi.

Il prezzo non è basso, e a queste cifre le quote di mercato ci dicono che le persone preferiscono scegliere marchi come Apple e Samsung, ma crediamo che lo Xiaomi 17 Ultra possa avere un ottimo successo soprattutto nella variante marchiata Leica, in vendita nei negozi del brand storico a 1.999 euro e destinato ad un target che è interessato solo alla pura qualità fotografica e per questo, da cliente Leica, ha speso nella sua vita molto di più di quelli che sono i 2000 euro chiesti per questo smartphone.

Arrivati alla fine, lo Xiaomi 17 Ultra Leica Edition si capisce in fretta: non nasce per essere “il top che va bene a tutti”. Nasce per essere un telefono che mette la fotocamera davanti a tutto il resto, e lo fa con un’idea chiara. Hardware importante, resa Leica più presente, e quella sensazione da camera phone vero che oggi non è così scontata. Il nostro è un modello asiatico importato, e questo cambia parecchio il quadro. Da una parte ti porti a casa la versione “piena”, con batteria enorme e dotazione più ricca; dall’altra devi accettare una ROM che, anche se oggi si sistema abbastanza bene, resta meno immediata di una global.

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra made me hate AI photos. I wasn’t a big fan of tweaking my photos using AI editing tools in the first place. There is a sense of personality in capturing imperfect photos. I am, after all, an incredibly average photographer! I know my photos aren’t artistic, and I’m quite happy with that. I don’t need an AI object eraser to remove people or objects, or (more recently) type and describe how I want my photo to look, and let AI do its thing. A lot of phones now offer several AI tools to help you create that “perfect” photo. So, imagine my surprise when Xiaomi said they don’t want to rely heavily on AI camera features, but rather deliver on true camera hardware to help capture perfect photos. After using the Xiaomi 17 Ultra’s cameras this week on Vietnam’s Phu Quoc island, capturing over 500 photos, I can safely say I agree with their vision.

I have my problems with the Xiaomi 17 Ultra – the software is still among my least favourites, the camera module is too chunky and the lower screen resolution and cheap feeling of the fiberglass rear don’t befit a phone of this price. But even still, it gets enough right elsewhere to earn my recommendation. Performance is among the best of any phone that we’ve tested to date, the cameras are sharp, versatile and accessible, battery life is decent and great strides have been made to deliver a slimmer, lighter and altogether more manageable flagship phone.

It’s really those who are into photography and videomaking that will enjoy this phone the most, though. The camera system is truly excellent, and at times, this feels more like a camera than a phone.Of course, no product is perfect, and there are a few areas where Xiaomi is bested by the competition. For instance, both the Oppo Find X9 Pro and Honor Magic 8 Pro have better battery life (in my experience), and they’re better for macro photography, too. But does that mean they’re better choices? Not necessarily. Xiaomi’s image processing and filter selection mean I often prefer the shots from the 17 Ultra, and it has plenty to offer elsewhere, too. One thing’s for certain, this is among the best camera phones available right now.

Well, the only issue is last year's Xiaomi 15 Ultra, which was a bit more consistent even though it lacked a vario periscope. If you haven't used the Xiaomi 15 Ultra or even the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, however, you'd be none the wiser. Another downside is the software, which feels like something out of 2020 for all the wrong reasons.

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra has some of the best cameras I’ve ever used on a phone. The 1-inch sensor produces hugely detailed images with controlled highlights, especially at night, where the phone shines (not a pun). The overall look of images feels genuinely photographic. I love the Leica-tuned profiles that give images a professional tone that, to my eye, stands out from almost every other flagship right now. But it’s not flawless. The mechanical 75–100mm zoom is technically clever, yet in real use, I didn’t find the 25mm range enough to be transformative.

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra makes one thing very clear: this is a camera-first flagship in every sense. From the 1-inch primary sensor to the new continuous optical zoom telephoto system, the phone is engineered around photography rather than just adding impressive specs for the sake of it. In both daylight and low light, it consistently delivers results that are among the best I’ve seen on a smartphone so far this year. Beyond the cameras, the upgrades are meaningful. A larger 6.9-inch flat display, a massive 6,800mAh battery without added bulk, and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset all make this a serious flagship package. The only caveat is that this Chinese unit has certain software limitations, so it’s hard to judge the full experience until the global version arrives.

However, the improved telephoto and selfie cameras, along with the exceptional main camera performance, make the device one of the best in its class. We also didn't feel the absence of the second 3x telephoto camera either, as the current 200MP telephoto shooter with continuous optical zoom and close-distance focusing covers all bases.

With the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max, Xiaomi makes its ambition to rival the iPhone 17 Pro Max clear not only in name, but also in imaging performance. This strategy largely succeeds in Photo, where the device scores just one point below Apple’s flagship. The slight deficit is mainly due to zoom limitations, stemming from the ultra-wide camera’s constrained 17mm focal length, which reduces flexibility at shorter zoom ranges. That said, the Xiaomi’s primary camera slightly outperforms the iPhone’s, delivering consistently accurate exposure, pleasing color rendering, and an excellent texture/noise trade-off. Noise is particularly well controlled, often surpassing Apple’s performance in challenging scenes.

The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max is a well-rounded flagship phone without many weak points, if at all. It has the latest and greatest chipset, a high-end display, an excellent build, a huge battery, snappy charging, amazing speakers and dependable camera hardware. The secondary display is a nice touch, as it makes the Pro Max stand out, but, most importantly, it makes the selfie-taking experience with the rear cameras so much more flexible. Despite being so well-rounded, however, it's hard to recommend the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max if you are looking for an amazing camera phone. The cameras here seem good to the average Joe, but there are objectively better alternatives with more capable hardware right now, and the telephoto camera is a miss. Sadly, the camera department is the only one that keeps the 17 Pro Max from getting an excellent score.

Xiaomi is feeling bold and confident with this year's Xiaomi 17 lineup, even if they are only launching the devices in China for now. We rarely see large smartphone makers experiment with features like secondary displays on the back. The last Xiaomi phone with a similar feature was the Xiaomi 11 Ultra, released in 2021. Xiaomi might be onto something this time around, as the rear screen is already confirmed to stay for at least another generation. The rear screen isn't the only highlight feature of the 17 Pro Max too. It is seemingly packed to the bream with some great hardware - a huge and bright LTPO OLED panel on the front, the most powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 SoC, a huge 7,500 mAh battery with fast charging and a capable camera setup.
