EN→IT Archive.org versionToshiba's 8-inch Encore can run legacy desktop Windows apps, although you may find them difficult to work with on such a small screen. Performance could be better, but the price is attractive and battery life impressive. Toshiba has not been able to make the Encore particularly thin or light, and the screen bezel is fairly large, so that overall this is a relatively big device for an 8-inch tablet. It measures 213mm by 135.9mm by 10.68mm and weighs 445g. Compare it to the Android-based Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0, which comes in at 209.8mm by 123.8mm by 7.4mm and 314g, and it's clear how relatively chunky the Encore is. Even so, it's obviously a lot smaller and lighter than a notebook, and the build feels solid.

EN→IT Archive.org versionAs a pure tablet, the Encore leaves a few things to be desired. Physically it’s heavy, thick and a bit ugly when compared to the likes of the Nexus 7 and iPad mini. Furthermore, the paucity of touch-optimised apps in the Windows store, compared to to iOS and Android, is still an issue. Certainly, if Toshiba forgot to ask for this one back, I could see it quickly replacing the HP Pavilion dm1 as my backup and travel PC and my Nexus 7 as my go-to tablet. With my Android Moto G and a Windows 8.1 Encore, I’d be covered for all eventualities.

EN→IT Archive.org versionThe Encore is a compact means of enjoying Windows 8.1, and it’s also relatively cheap, but unlike some Windows tablets that are 10in or larger, we can’t see the Encore replacing your laptop. As it has no full-size USB ports you’ll struggle to connect your existing peripherals, and if you just want a tablet for web browsing you may be better off with an Android tablet such as the LG G Pad 8.3 instead.

It’s an affordable 8-inch tablet with all-day battery life and has access to a full version of Windows 8 including Microsoft Office. In reality, certain aspects of Microsoft’s operating system just don’t work on such a small device. Trying to use it in a traditional Windows way is far too frustrating and buying a Bluetooth keyboard is the only way you will get great use of having Office access. The buggy, unresponsive performance we endured did not disappear even with our second review model, so it makes it difficult to recommend.

Intel HD Graphics (Bay Trail): GPU Bay Trail SoCs integrata per tablet e notebook. Si basa sulla GPU Ivy Bridge con quattro Execution Units e supporta DirectX 11.
Soltanto i giochi datasi possono essere giocati in modo fluido con questi chips grafici (se non richiedono troppe prestazioni). I cores con memoria grafica condivisa in questa categoria hanno il vantaggio delle minori emissioni di calore e della maggiore autonomia della batteria. Per ufficio, internet, image processing, e video editing queste schede grafiche sono utilizzabili senza particolari problematiche.

Intel Atom:
La Intel Atom è una serie a 64-Bit di microprocessori (non tutti i modelli supportano 64bit) per portatili economici e piccoli (chiamati comunemente netbooks), MIDs, o UMPCs (Ultra Mibile Persona Computer). La particolarità della nuova architettura è l'esecuzione "in order" (al posto della consueta e più veloce esecuzione "out of order"). Di conseguenza il transistor count della serie Atom è abbastanza inferiore, e quindi più economico da produrre. Inoltre, il consumo di energia è molto contenuto. Le prestazioni per Megahertz sono ovviamente peggiori rispetto ai vecchi Pentium 3M (1,2 GHz alla pari di 1.6 GHz Atom).
