Tornando al concetto iniziale e avviandoci alle conclusioni, anche questo Sony Xperia 1 è uno smartphone che cerca di cantare fuori dal coro, puntando sul particolare formato 21:9. Esteticamente il prodotto è davvero bello, soprattutto nella livrea viola che abbiamo avuto in prova. Nell'uso quotidiano il formato allungato risulta pienamente utilizzabile, anzi, per chi ha le mani non troppo grandi come il sottoscritto, il formato più stretto risulta molto comodo. Simile discorso per il lettore di impronte laterale, che sblocca il telefono in modo molto naturale appena si appoggia il pollice impugnandolo con la mano destra. Meno comoda tale soluzione quando invece si vorrebbe sbloccare il telefono con altre dita, ad esempio quando è appoggiato su un piano. Per una maggiore flessibilità una soluzione di sblocco tramite il volto migliore di quella integrata di default in Android avrebbe fatto piacere.

In conclusione Sony Xperia 1 è un prodotto bello, ben costruito e dalla notevole ottimizzazione software, display 21:9 eccellente e fotocamera nettamente migliorata rispetto al passato. Peccato per alcune sbavature software , un lettore di impronte quasi inutilizzabile e poche funzionalità inedite interessanti, mancanze inaccettabili per un prodotto che arriva sul mercato a €949. Il prezzo così alto lo mette in diretta concorrenza con smartphone ben più maturi, proposti ora a cifre più basse a pochi mesi dal loro rilascio. Consiglio l’acquisto a chi cerca un device dal design elegante, con un comparto audio/video eccellente e un display di tutto rispetto.

Xperia 1 è un top di gamma votato alla multimedialità e alle prestazioni, che fa tesoro delle tecnologie e dell’esperienza che Sony ha accumulato nel corso del tempo. Dopo averlo provato, possiamo dire che è un vero peccato vedere la casa giapponese relegata a un ruolo marginale nel panorama Android, almeno a livello di vendite, perchè Xperia 1 ha tutte le carte in regola per fare bene. Tecnologie uniche e che lo distinguono dalla massa, tanta potenza, un comparto fotografico eccellente e uno schermo incredibile sono alla base di uno smartphone dalla spiccata personalità e che speriamo abbia successo anche in Italia. Certo non è tutto perfetto, le dimensioni sono elevate, troppo elevate, una diagonale inferiore avrebbe reso più semplice maneggiarlo o anche solo metterlo il tasca, mentre la batteria, pur svolgendo un ottimo lavoro con la limitata capacità a disposizione, è solo nella media per autonomia.

Si cerca di stupire con form factor limite ma qui siamo forse troppo al limite, non mi dispiace il 21:9 ma questo è grosso e troppo lungo, al punto da risultare squilibrato se lo si tiene con una sola mano. Ottimo in tutto il resto, tranne che nella battteria che però fa arrivare a sera. A me il software di Sony piace ma forse punta troppo a cose di nicchia, nonostante ciò è molto affidabile.

Non è uno smartphone qualunque, non lo acquisti di certo per avere un telefono qualunque con cui chiamare e navigare sui social, è molto di più ed è importante saperlo. Sulla carta ha la stoffa per far mangiare la polvere a tanti, segnare una strada precisa verso la vera innovazione tecnologica e fare "ciao ciao" ad alcuni competitor che pretendono di stare in gioco solo per avere Snapdragon 8xx e qualche "rivoluzionaria fotocamera" (solitamente di Sony). For starters, I’m really digging the extra tall and narrow design of the Xperia 1. Overall, I’m not convinced by the Xperia 1. I started this page by mentioning it’s a $949 phone, and at that price level I’m expecting excellence at most aspects of the phone. Unfortunately, the new Sony phone doesn’t showcase that. The screen and form-factor great, however is calibration issues, its higher power draw resulting in worse off battery performance, and the phone’s many problems with the cameras just don’t make it appealing as a purchase. This is especially in the face of the competition released earlier in the year which has seen larger price drops with which you’ll definitely end up as getting more value out of your purchase. Sony’s product development needs to focus on actually delivering a more solid and robust phone, rather than trying to upsell it via marketing buzz-words – here’s to hoping they’ll manage to get there.

It’s hard to recommend a $949 phone when a $479 phone beats the snot out of it in the core category of photography. Sony's mobile business is supposedly headed in a new direction, but one crucial aspect doesn't seem to have changed – pricing. In the US, the Sony Xperia 1 can be only pre-ordered for $949 on Amazon, and it won't ship until July 12. A Galaxy S10+ costs $50 less and you can have one today, either unlocked or through a carrier. Had Sony bundled it with a pair of premium earphones, the Xperia 1 would have been a great deal, but as things stand right now, it's going to be another tough sell for a Sony flagship in the US. And this is unfortunate at a point in time when Sony desperately needs a phone that sells.

The triple camera, the stereo speakers, latest Snapdragon chip, stylish design, and the IP68 ingress protection all add to an overall great package. The camera experience is a little bit rough around the edges but finally on par with the competition in the things that matter. Battery life could have been better, but we guess that the 4K screen needs its juice. We have no doubts anyone who buys the Xperia 1 will be as happy as we are with it. The Xperia 1 is priced like just about any other flagship smartphone at launch - it's not cheap by any margin but its price will only get better from here on making it a better deal down the line. But even as things stand right now, we think it deserves serious consideration by anyone looking for a high-end smartphone.

The Xperia 1 is a supermodel smartphone. After a week reviewing it, more squat phones just feel a bit weird. Its premium design and lithe frame shine, the screen is seriously good, there’s a clean interface, a great stills camera and it’s class-leading when it comes to video capabilities. It’s both the most expensive and the best Sony phone to date. Having said that, in the face of stiff competition from more affordable phones like the OnePlus 7 Pro and Honor 20 Pro, while it’s excellent, the Xperia 1 isn’t necessarily good value and its oddball size won't appeal to everyone. So if you’re a mobile gamer, watch more 16:9 shows than 21:9 movies, and care more about stills more than video, then there are other better phones out there that cost less. If, on the other hand, you’re a video enthusiast, edit a lot of documents, watch films when out and about, need a good camera and split-screen multitask a lot, this is cream of the crop.
