Con i suoi 9 pollici, Nubia RedMagic Astra è un tablet moderno insolitamente piccolo che non ha badato a spese per quanto riguarda l'hardware. Astra è un tablet da gioco che vola nei benchmark e nelle attività quotidiane. L'illuminazione RGB e il radiatore attivo aggiungono un tocco speciale.

Il RedMagic Astra esce sul mercato con un listino che parte da 499 euro per la versione 12/256GB, sale a 649 euro per la 16/512GB e arriva a 849 euro per quella da 24GB/1TB. Probabilmente la versione più consigliata è quella base, sebbene per gli amanti degli emulatori e per chi vuole tenere il prodotto a lungo, spendere 150 euro in più per 4GB di RAM e il doppio dello storage abbia molto senso. Non vi ho parlato nel dettaglio dei due speaker laterali, che sono simmetrici e di buona qualità generale. Tuttavia, non sono potenti e corposi come quelli di altre alternative: sia il Galaxy Tab S11 che gli iPad più recenti offrono una qualità audio e un volume superiori. Essendo solo due, inoltre, è più facile coprirne uno con la mano, sebbene la loro posizione centrale riduca questo rischio. La competizione, di fatto, non è molta.

Venendo da un prodotto completamente nuovo come il REDMAGIC Nova Gaming Tablet, l'azienda cinese avrebbe potuto limitarsi a piccoli aggiustamenti, e invece con il qui presente REDMAGIC Astra ha deciso per un bel cambio di rotta, riducendo drasticamente le dimensioni del dispositivo, ma senza per questo sacrificare la sua ricerca del primato tecnologico. Ci troviamo dunque tra le mani un tablet compatto, ma estremamente potente, con una dotazione hardware che molti competitor si sognano (qualcuno ha detto schermo OLED?) e un prezzo di listino come al solito davvero interessante. Peccato per un software modesto e delle garanzie di supporto del tutto sconosciute.

Purtroppo il software non è dei più curati e ci sono solo i DRM Widevine L3, dunque i contenuti di Netflix si possono visualizzare solamente in SD. Inoltre manca il caricatore in confezione e un tablet di questo tipo non si compra esattamente per la qualità dei sensori fotografici. Tuttavia, REDMAGIC Astra Gaming Tablet è un prodotto ampiamente riuscito, che farà divertire molto chi deciderà di dargli una chance.

But as we see it, the Astra is the ideal compact tablet - perfect for gaming and multimedia, for power users, and even for the regular day-to-day tasks. Honestly, yes. If you’re into mobile gaming and you’re looking for a device that performs exceptionally well when playing games, this is a device that does that and then some. It’s got a beautiful display, a high-powered chipset, lots of RAM and storage, and it’s thin and light. Not to mention it has what I feel is the perfect size display for not only mobile gaming, but a tablet in general. The Astra isn’t perfect, but it comes close, and that’s certainly in no small part due to the affordable price tag. With a starting price of $599, the Astra is definitely an attainable gaming device for plenty of consumers. I highly recommend it if you have the money to spare. Would I use this over the Lenovo Legion Tab Gen 3 personally? No. But that’s because I have a mobile controller with a USB-C direct connection that I love using, and I want the tablet centered between the two sides of the controller.

On the one hand, people who enjoy some heavy and competitive mobile gaming but, for some reason, find most smartphones too small in terms of display size. On the other hand, though, the Astra lacks dedicated hardware controls such as shoulder buttons or capacitive zones to give you that extra precision and flexibility during gaming, so it's a pros-and-cons situation.There are some very strong sides to this slate – the display is simply amazing, and the 165 Hz refresh rate is super smooth. There's power on tap you can use in non-gaming scenarios as well, and the compact nature of the Astra makes it a perfect travel buddy. But you have to outweigh this against the kind of short battery life, the lack of wireless charging and the mediocre camera if you want to use it as a non-gaming regular tablet.

Battery life is good enough so you can keep gaming for over four hours, or double that with lighter, optimised options like Call of Duty Mobile.

I found the display to be quite excellent. I'm a real fan of the OLED screen in this tablet, and the 1,100 to 1,600 nits of peak brightness really complements HDR content too. I did not have too much trouble viewing the screen under indirect sunlight, although it was not quite as bright as my Galaxy S23 Ultra, but that makes sense considering the S23's display is rated for 1200 nits (HBM), 1750 nits (peak) which is slightly more than the Astra Gaming Tablet's 1,100 (hbm) 1,600 (peak) screen. It also ticks the boxes on media consumption support and for being just over a third of a kilo at 370 grams. What's not to like? Well, it does not support cellular for things like a data SIM, and there's no charger in the box in any region, but you do get a whole lot of tablet for that. You may be wondering why I did not include anything about the cameras.
