La scelta di un display OLED che funge anche da cassa, del sensore ToF, di una batteria di 3500 mAh (rispetto ai 3000mAh del G7 ThinQ) è apprezzabile, così come le prestazoni complessive della fotocamera, probabilmente la migliore messa in campo dal brand sudcoreano fino ad ora.

Despite all its promises, the LG G8 ThinkQ’s audio performance leaves much to be desired. The Crystal Sound OLED technology, while certainly making it very hard for the speakers to be occluded by the user’s hand, produces a canny overall timbre with almost absent bass, lack of impact, and numerous artifacts. The noise-cancelling algorithm, albeit extremely efficient, also comes with its share of unfortunate consequences. To top it all, the HD Audio app records only mono files.

The bloatware is stupid. The gimmicks are dumb. They clog up an otherwise wonderful device. The cameras are fine. They take nice photos and you’ll be happy with your Instagram feed. The screen is great, the battery is fab and the processor is decent. The LG G8 thinQ is a good phone. It’s a really nice phone actually. If you’re willing to spend 20 minutes on set up taking off all the stupid stuff and ignoring the silly gimmicks you’ll be happy. You’re looking at a price point of anything from R8000 to R10 000. I think it is well priced and if you’re an Android fan you’ll be happy. Bejeweled is also the best time waster on the planet and everyone should download it.

LG makes a really good phone with some compelling features that won’t frustrate you for the next couple of years. Unless you want fast software updates.

The LG G8 ThinQ’s camera is a competent rather than a stellar performer. It does most things reasonably well without really excelling or failing dramatically in any area. It produces colors that are attractive, if not always accurate, and its stills AF system is fast and effective. It also usually handles exposures well, underexposing only occasionally and even taking backlight situations in its stride unless the zoom is in use. Its video output is similarly pleasing in many situations, but the best results require a static shooting position and constant subject distance. The inconsistent bokeh performance is a little disappointing and not up to the standard of the current leader in this area (the Huawei P30 Pro). However, if you take a few shots and don’t intend to magnify the image, chances are that there will be a satisfactory image available.

Unfortunately, it's not all sunshine and roses. The Crystal Sound OLED panel's sound quality isn't the best we've seen. The 3D ToF-enabled features, except for the excellent portrait selfies and the Face Unlock, feels downright gimmicky. The Hand ID works really slow and it's unreliable, the Air Motion gestures need more work. And it's really hard to see any proper use case for those at all. It will be cool to show off to some friends but you will end up using the fingerprint reader, the Face Unlock and resort to tapping instead of waving with your hands when it comes to simple tasks like changing a track, capturing a screenshot and turning up the volume. Some kind of competitive fast charging tech would have been much more appreciated.

Dovessi comprarlo al prezzo di listino ufficiale non ci penserei mai. LG lo proponeva a circa di 770 euro che, tutto sommato, ci potrebbero in parte stare. Si tratta del top di gamma più economico lanciato da LG nel corso degli ultimi anni abbassando di fatto parte dell’asticella generale. Non mi basta però avere una bella scocca, un super display, un notch di dimensioni enormi con integrati i sensori di movimento (inutili, per questo non ne abbiamo parlato) e processore e RAM di recente fattura. Il contesto dei concorrenti offre anche di più quasi alla stessa cifra con risultati nettamente superiori sotto molti punti di vista.

Siamo alle battute finali della recensione di LG G8 ThinQ, smartphone proposto a 769 Euro di listino. Un buon prodotto, costoso ma nemmeno poi tanto pensando al listino di competitor come Galaxy S10+ o Huawei P30 Pro. Tecnicamente regge il passo della concorrenza, tuttavia non è riuscito fino in fondo a catturare le nostre attenzioni, forse per il design ormai superato, quelle funzioni un po’ strane legate al TOF e forse perché gli manca qualcosa sul comparto fotografico. LG è di nuovo riuscita a “far 30 ma non 31”, come se ogni volta ci fosse qualcosa su cui l’azienda si perde proprio sul più bello, intanto però monitoriamo il prezzo, perché nel giro di qualche mese potrebbe cominciare a trovarsi con offerte interessanti.

Le ombre per questo LG G8s ThinQ ci sono, il look estetico (gusti personali da parte) è un pizzico compromesso da quel notch giustificato ma grande, la durata della batteria poteva essere migliore e il prezzo, seppure lodevolmente più basso rispetto lo scorso anno, resta ancora impegnativo (769 Euro) ma è un discorso che si estende a tutta la fascia alta. LG G8s ThinQ ha però un vero e proprio asso nella manica, è calo di prezzo. Lo street price dei device LG cala velocemente e vertiginosamente, LG G8s ThinQ è destinato a diventare una delle migliori scelte quando il prezzo inizierà la sua discesa. Un po’ sta già calando.

LG G8s ThinQ è uno smartphone che prova a distinguersi dalla concorrenza implementando funzionalità come lo sblocco tramite sistema venoso e le "gesture in aria", ma si dimentica fin troppo spesso della comodità durante l'utilizzo quotidiano. L'utente ha infatti l'esigenza di sbloccare e utilizzare lo smartphone in maniera veloce e il fatto che Hand ID e Air Motion spesso non funzionino come dovrebbero non aiuta di certo. La sicurezza è importante, ma non deve compromettere l'utilizzo quotidiano. Tralasciando questo aspetto (le due funzionalità ovviamente sono facoltative, anche se dovevano essere il punto di forza del prodotto), LG G8s ThinQ è uno smartphone senza infamia e senza lode. Troviamo quindi un'ottima solidità costruttiva, un buon display, un comparto fotografico nella media e delle prestazioni in grado di far girare bene qualsiasi app presente sul Play Store. Ottimo il comparto audio, mentre l'autonomia è sotto alla media.

Altra cosa che non mi è piaciuta, ma purtroppo LG è abbastanza abitudinaria in questo, è il Time to market. Passa sempre troppo tempo tra la presentazione di uno smartphone di LG e l'arrivo sul mercato. Questo aspetto, comunque, lo compenserei con in rapido deprezzamento che hanno gli LG rispetto al listino. Con poco meno di 300 euro oggi possiamo prendere un LG G7 dello scorso anno.

Quanto costa? 799 euro. Peccato per la tacca molto grande, le dimensioni superiori al G7 e le gesture con il palmo praticamente inutili. Avrei barattato volentieri questa tacca con il sensore sotto al display. Esteticamente abbiamo una cover in vetro a specchio e un bordo in metallo lucido; davvero molto bello ed elegante con un ottimo touch & feel, anche se la cover posteriore non e’ esente da ditate, ovviamente rimovibili tramite la pezzolina in dotazione. Il G8s ThinQ ha un display OLED da 6.21 pollici con risoluzione QHD+ (2248 x 1440), monta un processore Qualcomm SDM855 Snapdragon 855 (7 nm) – Octa-core (1×2.84 GHz Kryo 485 & 3×2.42 GHz Kryo 485 & 4×1.8 GHz Kryo 485), 6GB di RAM e 128GB di memoria interna, espandibile tramite microSD fino a 1TB. La fotocamera principale è una tripla cam, con sensore principale da 12 MP, f/1.8, 27mm, il secondario sempre da 12 MP ma f/2.6, 49mm, teleobiettivo con zoom ottico 2x e il terzo sensore da 13 MP, f/2.4, 14mm (ultra grandangolare) e flash LED, mentre la frontale ha un sensore da 8 MP, f/1.9. Con la batteria da 35500 mAh, coprire la giornata non dovrebbe essere un problema, lo scopriremo nei prossimi giorni.

949 euro compreso il secondo display sono allineati ai top, tenendo presente che il secondo display varrà circa 200 euro. Inizialmente pensavo fosse una vaccata ma, provandolo, mi sono ricreduto anche solo per tenere in posizione visione serie TV lo smartphone. Ha senso nei giochi, dove dà il meglio. Certo, non lo porterei in giro, il telefono diventa troppo pesante, ma magari nello zaino sì. E finalmente in un LG trovo tutto: robusto, buona autonomia, buona velocità, buone foto, buona idea dual display, a tratti meglio del foldable. Si, mi è piaciuto, anche per l'ottima affidabilità.

Mi piace molto l'idea del secondo display integrato nella custodia, mi sembra più robusto e più semplice di uno smartphone pieghevole complicato e fragile di uno schermo flessibile. She mentioned lower resolution on the second screen and a poor speaker, but we now have the same resolution on both screens and solid stereo speakers. The resolution on the primary display has been lowered to match the second display, but at 403ppi, I doubt anyone will notice while the slightly better battery life may be worth the change in resolution.

LG: LG Electronics Inc. è una filiale di LG Group. È una società sudcoreana ed è stata fondata come Goldstar Co, Ltd, nel 1958. Il gruppo offre prodotti nei settori della tecnologia dell'informazione, dell'elettronica di consumo e delle comunicazioni mobili e degli elettrodomestici. LG Electronics è il terzo produttore mondiale di elettrodomestici. In qualità di produttore di notebook, LG è diventata nota a un pubblico più ampio nel mercato di lingua tedesca solo nel 2005. Dopo alcuni anni, LG si è ritirata in gran parte dal settore dei laptop. La gamma di prodotti comprende TV OLED, LED/LCD e al plasma, sistemi home theater, lettori Blu-ray e lettori audio e video.

Qualcomm Snapdragon:

SD 855: SoC di fascia alta per smartphone che è stato introdotto alla fine del 2018 e prodotto in 7 nm al TSMC. Integra un "Prime Core" basato su un'architettura ARM Cortex-A76 modificata con clock fino a 2,84 GHz. Altri tre core di prestazioni sono anch'essi basati sull'A76 ma con clock fino a 2,42 GHz. Inoltre, sono integrati quattro core a risparmio energetico basati sull'architettura ARM Cortex-A55 con clock fino a 1,8 GHz. Oltre ai core del processore, il SoC integra un modem X24 LTE (fino a 2 Gigbit download), un nuovo modem Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi 6 ready, 60 GHz mmWave), Hexagon 690 DSP con nuovi core Tensor per l'elaborazione AI, uno Spectra 380 ISP con un motore di visione computerizzata integrato e un controller di memoria LPDDR4x integrato.
