Fitbit has filed a patent for new blood pressure technology. Recently published documents show a wrist-worn device that the wearer could use to measure their blood pressure, suggesting that the company might integrate this feature into an upcoming smartwatch. The tool uses a pressure sensor on the device, which the user pushes their index finger against; this finger is specified as it is where the radial artery can be found.

According to the filing, the wearer could be guided to apply the correct amount of force using feedback on display or via speakers. At the same time, a PPG sensor or similar will measure the heartbeat, allowing the device to provide systolic and diastolic readings. The patent notes that the pressure sensor could be a force-sensitive display, though this still needs to be finalized. In any case, the sensor will be placed externally on the device in a position not ordinarily in contact with the user’s body.

Fitbit confirmed in 2021 that it was working on new blood pressure measuring technology to keep up with its competitors. For example, the Samsung Galaxy Watch5 uses pulse wave analysis to take the readings, but the company recommends that this tool be recalibrated using a traditional blood pressure cuff every 28 days. It is unclear precisely when consumers can expect to lay their hands on a Fitbit watch using this new blood pressure technology.
