On the whole, the M17X is a great notebook to have if you want something that's purely built for entertainment - whether it's for watching movies or games. It is a pretty beefy machine with the muscles to handle the latest games and it has great sounding speakers to boot. Its powerful processor also allows it to multitask very well and run apps such as Photoshop with aplomb too. However, on the downside, it is very bulky making it more of a desktop replacement than a portable gaming notebook.

There's no doubting that the Alienware M17x is a striking piece of design and one that we actually came to like. It’s the best Alienware machine we’ve seen for ages in terms of looks and build quality, brilliantly combining the solidity of outdoor latrines with sci-fi set-design.

However, this isn't quite enough to distract from its main problem - the fact that, as a gaming laptop, it's firmly wedged between a rock and a hard place. Its bulk means that it's not suitable for transport and, if you spent two grand on a desktop machine instead, it’d be at least twice as powerful and certainly much more upgradable.

Over all I am very pleased with this laptop, It looks sleek, and performs like a desktop. The weight is going to be fun with all my travels, but thats a price I am ready to pay to have a Sweet gaming laptop. Price was $$$$ but no worse than a nicely configured Precision M6400, but the GPU options put this laptop ahead of anything else. upgrades to a QX9300 will be the next item on my list to do. When the 4 GB DIMMS drop to a more reasonable price, a 8 GB Config could be in the works.

The M17x from Alienware, however, is totally justified in calling itself a gaming notebook. In fact, as you'll soon find out, it's powerful enough to make most desktop PCs look utterly worthless. It's expensive, bulky and just a little bit noisy, but if you're after a gaming laptop and money is no object, you won't get much faster than the Alienware M17x. Those with less change in their pockets can scale down some of the components to make it more affordable.

The M17x has an effective cooling system that kept it cool during our testing, and we liked the AlienFX lighting system and different case color options. The switchable graphics are handy and equates to good battery life (2:15). Our biggest issue with this machine is the subpar screen, which is out of place on a machine of this caliber. Other than the screen we found it difficult to fault the M17x and give it our recommendation.

This is a product with a very specific market niche, no doubt about that. The majority of people would hate its tacky keyboard, large dimensions, chubby looks and weight, but this is hardly the idea behind this model anyway. Notebooks such as these are made for the lucky few that will be able to appreciate every detail on it, and make the best of the hardware that they’re packing. It’s for these reasons that the final price of Alienware models amounts to more than just the sum of its parts, but that’s the case with all their other aspects as well, which manages to keep the price in the background. Those that opt for Alienware notebooks are passionate gamers that want more than a mere gaming machine and are ready to pay for that. Simply put, these are “aliens” that look for unique characteristics in a PC and are willing to spend hours in seemingly pointless activities such as creating profiles and setting all those separate colour and brightness levels for the keyboard and the surrounding elements, even if most of those remains unused. They will proudly wear the Alienware cap and stick the Alienware sticker onto the door of their rooms, while the presence of such a PC will infuse them with joy every day, just for the ability to uncompromisingly delve into what these users enjoy the most - gaming.

With all that said, though, the M17x R3 has an awful lot to offer any consumer looking for a gaming notebook. It's definitely pricier than ASUS's offering, but it's also faster, more comfortable to use, flashier, and has both better battery life and a better overall design. Clevo notebooks can't really compete on cost here, either. The M17x R3 is just fun to use, with a great screen, comfortable keyboard, minimal gloss, and a solid build.

Not only does the M17x blow away every other notebook, gaming or otherwise, but it does so with panache. What other rig has multicolored backlighting and can wirelessly stream Blu-ray movies and games--in full HD--to your TV? The heat on the underside is an issue, but that's just about the only thing we don't like about the M17x. While $3,300 is a lot to pay, you're getting more than twice as much laptop as the next most powerful machine we've tested. It doesn't get any better than this.

Alienware: Alienware è un produttore Americano di hardware controllato completamente dalla Dell. Si concentra principalmente sull'assemblaggio di macchine ad alta prestazione per il gaming. Alienware si occupa anche della vendita di laptops rimarchiati e di periferiche per computer, come cuffie, mouse, monitors e tastiere. Alienware è stata fondata nel 1996. Il quartier generale dell'azienda si trova in Florida. Alienware ha insediato un suo quartier generale EMEA (Europa, Medio Oriente, ed Africa) in Irlanda, dal 2002. Nel 2005, Alienware ha raggiunto un fatturato annuo di vendite di 170 milioni di dollari ed ha lanciato un sistema internazionale nel 2003 con presenze in Australia, Canada, Francia, Germania, Regno unito, e Costa Rica. La quota di mercato internazionale è tuttavia contenuta.

Queste schede grafiche sono paragonabili alle entusiasmanti schede grafiche desktop, come la 9800M GT. Le schede hanno un core simile alle relative schede desktop, ma hanno un clock inferiore e spesso hanno processori con meno ombre. I giochi moderni come Age of Conan, Race Driver Grid, Call of Duty 4, Mass Effect, o Gothic 3 dovrebbero scorrere in modo fluido con dettagli elevati (Crysis dovrebbe funzionare con dettagli medio alti).

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M SLI: Due Nvidia GeForce GTX 280M combinate con tecnologia SLI. Poiché non tutti i giochi supportano la SLI in modo adeguato, l'incremento di  prestazioni rispetto ad una singola scheda è di appena 0-40%. Inoltre, ad un frame-rates tra 20-30 fps la soluzione SLI potrebbe avere qualche piccolo problema di scatti (a causa del diverso frametimes rilasciato dalle due schede). Ognuna delle due GeForce GTX 280M si basa su un core G92b prodotto pertanto in 55nm. Sfrutta tutte le 128 pipelines del core G92b e di conseguenza è paragonabile alla 9800M GTX+ desktop e non alla desktop GTX 280. 

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2: Le due Mobility Radeon HD 4870 in modalità Crossfire (simile alla SLI). Raddoppiano i consumi di energia ma mostrano un miglioramento di appena 0-50% in prestazioni (in relazione al supporto dei giochi, ai drivers ed alle impostazioni).
A causa degli elevati shaders (2x800) le prestazioni di gioco sono ottime e consentono l'utilizzo di tutti i giochi DirectX 9 con massima risoluzione e dettagli. Anche i pesanti giochi in DirectX 10 del 2008 (Crysis Warhead, Far Cry 2) possono essere utilizzati con il massimo dei dettagli.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870: Scheda grafica DirectX 11 di fascia alta basata sulla desktop HD5770. Grazie al memory bus da 128 Bit, solo con memoria GDDR5 molto veloce (altrimenti si sarebbe creato un collo di bottiglia).

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M: Scheda grafica di fascia alta directX 11 basata sul chip GF106 che utilizza memoria grafica GDDR5 (1.5 GB).

AMD Radeon HD 6970M:

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M: Due schede GeForce GTX 580M (GF114 Fermi) in modalità SLI. A causa dell'utilizzo massimo di energia di 2x 100 Watt di entrambe le schede MXM, la GTX580M SLI può essere utilizzata solo su portatili molto grandi.

Ridurre la distanza delle Schede Grafiche per gli utenti che vogliono utilizzare il videogiochi. I nuovi giochi dovrebbero funzionare su queste schede, ma con riduzione dei dettagli e risoluzione mediocre.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 520M: Scheda grafica di fascia bassa basata sul nuovo chip GF119 con un bus di memoria di 64 Bit e supporto per GDDR5 e DDR3.

Intel Core 2 Extreme:

QX9300: Costosa CPU mobile Quad Core con un moltiplicatore libero e TDP da 45 Watt. Grazie all'ampia Level 2 cache ed ai 2.5 GHz la CPU offre buone prestazioni per le applicazioni single e multithreaded.

Intel Core i7:

620M: Il Core i7-620M e la CPU Dual-Core più veloce per portatili (al momento del lancio nel 2010). La 620M ha un clock tra i 2.66 ed i 3.33 GHz grazie al Turbo Mode ed all'Hyperthreading, possono essere eseguiti 4 simultaneamente. Nella confezione, Intel include anche una GPU integrata (GMA HD) ed un controller di memoria. Di conseguenza, il TDP di 35 Watt dell'intero pacchetto risulta comunque buono.

2630QM: Veloce processore Quad-core basato sulla architettura Sandy Bridge con scheda grafica integrata e controller di memoria dual-channel DDR3.

2820QM: Veloce processore Quad-core basato sulla architettura Sandy Bridge con scheda grafica integrata e controller di memoria dual-channel DDR3.

2720QM: Veloce processore Quad-core basato sulla architettura Sandy Bridge con scheda grafica integrata e controller di memoria dual-channel DDR3.

Intel Core i5:

520M: Il Core i5-520M ha solo 3 MB di L3 Cache (rispetto alla I7-640M) ed un clock tra 2.4-2.93 GHz (Turbo Mode). Grazie all'Hyperthreading, possono essere processati 4 threads contemporaneamente. Nel pacchetto è inclusa anche una scheda grafica (GMA HD 3150) ed un controller memoria DDR3.

17.0: Allo stesso tempo i display da 17 pollici sono offerti più frequentemente come formato standard per i desktop-replacements. I portatili DTR non sono facili da trasportare, richiedono molta più energia ma in compenso i testi possono essere letti facilmente e le risoluzioni elevate non sono problematiche. I DTR sono principalmente destinati ad un utilizzo stazionario da scrivania, dove il peso ed i consumi non sono rilevanti.

17.3: Allo stesso tempo i display da 17 pollici sono offerti più frequentemente come formato standard per i desktop-replacements. Questo peso è medio per i notebooks. Di conseguenza la numerosità di portatili con schermo da 15-16 pollici è condizionata proprio dal peso.

5.75 kg:

Questo portatile è pesante. Questa categoria di peso rifuarda in particolare i desktop replacements con schermo da 19 pollici. Questa categoria è troppo pesante, anche per i DTR da 17 pollici.
18 pollici sono la norma per questa categoria di peso.
