Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 è un portatile che mi sentirei di consigliare a chi spazia tra diverse tipologie di attività, senza tuttavia entrare nel dettaglio di nessuna di queste. E' perfetto per lavoro (anche in multitasking), videoconferenze, studio, editing di video e foto "amatoriale" - anche se la resa cromatica dello schermo è un plus gradito - e ascolto e visualizzazione di contenuti multimediali. Non voglio essere frainteso: a questo prodotto non mancano affatto carattere e potenza, anzi. La versione AMD Ryzen 7 provata mi ha catturato per la sua versatilità, velocità e generale potenza di calcolo (del resto parliamo di un prodotto di fascia alta). Ma Surface Laptop 4 non è stato progettato per essere specializzato in un task particolare.

Surface Laptop, proprio per questo motivo, è sicuramente uno dei prodotti che ci sentiamo di consigliare a chi sta cercando un notebook premium con a bordo Windows: trovare oggi un portatile che sia così “all round” e che abbia anche un ottimo schermo, in un formato ampiamente sfruttabile, non è affatto semplice.

Il Surface Laptop 4 è esattamente il portatile che ci aspettavamo. I punti forti sono il design minimale, le prestazioni solidissime in campo produttivo, la lunga autonomia e uno schermo di prima fascia, che paga solo l’assenza dell’HDR e di una luminosità più elevata, rimanendo però eccellente. Il processore Ryzen 7, pur senza l’archiettura Zen 3, riesce a portare a termine tutti compiti che si possono incontrare in un ufficio senza difficoltà, la potenza di picco è molto elevata, tuttavia paga pegno quando ci sono da svolgere compiti complessi per lunghi periodi di tempo, difficile chiedere di più a un notebook così sottile. Di contro abbiamo un numero limitato di connessioni, un SSD migliorabile nella velocità e un prezzo di listino elevato, di 1899€ per questo modello con 16 GB di RAM e SSD da 512 GB, come sempre quando si tratta della gamma Surface.

All in all, the Surface Laptop 4 is a decent device for work purposes. It has a large screen despite being lightweight, and Microsoft has pre-installed some programs inside. This includes Microsoft Office and Microsoft Teams, which many people use for their work. In terms of performance, it's certainly more than capable of handling any office work. If we could improve the Surface Laptop 4, we would add more I/O ports and perhaps shrink the bezels around the display a bit more. While the battery test didn't meet our expectations, the laptop can easily last longer if you don't stream YouTube Music as much as we did. But what do you think?

Ultimately, the Surface Laptop 4 feels like a missed opportunity. I have no qualms with Microsoft leaving most of the notebook unchanged but their decision to use last year’s AMD processors is puzzling. And even if you take into account the model that uses Intel’s latest Tiger Lake processor, Microsoft’s refusal to update the USB-C port with Thunderbolt support makes it the only S$2,000 ultraportable notebook that I know of that only comes with a standard USB-C port. There’s no shortage of smaller more compact notebooks that are just as, if not faster. And if you really need a notebook with a larger display, LG’s gram 16 looks like the better option. It weighs a lot less, has a slightly larger display, better ports (with Thunderbolt support), and it even costs less. Back to the drawing board, Microsoft.
