Tutto questo si accompagna, come segnalato, ad una costruzione solida e molto ben curata oltre ad un impatto estetico decisamente importante. Surface Laptop 5 cambia quindi poco, sostanzialmente venendo aggiornato con la piattaforma Intel Core di 12-esima generazione, mantenendo le qualità che l'hanno reso popolare tra chi ricerca un notebook leggero, solido, con uno schermo ottimo per qualità e per quella scelta di rapporto tra i lati che lo rende ancora più funzionale per la produttività personale. Il prezzo non è di certo contenuto, soprattutto nelle versioni con CPU Core i7 e maggiore capienza di memoria.

I nuovi ultrabook di Microsoft convincono ma lasciano l’amaro in bocca per quello che si sarebbe potuto fare di meglio a fronte di un prezzo non elevato ma ricco di soluzioni altrettanto valide. A partire da 1.209 euro ci si può portare a casa il modello da 13,5 pollici su piattaforma Intel Evo con processore Intel Core i5-1235U e grafica Intel Iris Xe. Il design è invariato, così come la dotazione di porte, rendendo questa generazione di fatto un refresh rispetto ai Surface Laptop 4. Molto bene sotto il profilo multimediale, con un display brillante e un audio corposo, mentre il processore si presta più a un utilizzo in parallelo con tanti piccoli task svolti in background più che per attività particolarmente pesanti, che possono comunque essere svolte senza preoccuparsi di eventuali processi in secondo piano. In questo caso potrebbe intervenire un leggero thermal throttling, ma solo nelle sessioni più impegnative. In generale, chi è alla ricerca di un prodotto solido sotto tutti i punti di vista e dotato di Windows 11 potrà affidarsi ancora una volta alla gamma Surface, tenendo bene a mente quali siano i compromessi di questa serie, sebbene la presenza del supporto Thunderbolt 4 offra un ventaglio interessante di possibilità in termini di espansione.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 is a good laptop sold at the wrong price. It’s a bit shocking to see Microsoft ask for an MSRP of nearly $1,300 for a 13.5-inch laptop with just 8GB of RAM, a mid-tier Intel processor, and integrated graphics. Both the Apple MacBook Air M2 and MacBook Pro 13 M2, while priced at $1,500, still blow it out of the water when it comes to processing speed, enough to make spending $200 more worth it. Windows competitors like the Dell XPS 13 also put the Surface Laptop 5 to shame. While the XPS 13 we reviewed was a bit slower than the Laptop 5, it was also less expensive. A similarly priced configuration will have a much more capable Intel Core i7 processor, 32GB of RAM, and a 1TB solid state drive—a more potent combo that still retails for $50 less than the Surface. Microsoft frequently discounts the Surface Laptop 5, which can make it more competitive, but it still tends to underperform on value. It’s a shame because I genuinely like the Surface Laptop 5. It’s an attractive laptop with a good keyboard, responsive touchpad, and decent battery life. As mentioned, I’ve personally used a Surface Laptop for years. When compared to modern peers, though, its modest performance and limited feature set are dealbreakers.

Microsoft has arguably phoned it in with the Surface Laptop 5 this year – all it really did is throw in the latest Intel chips and Thunderbolt 4 and call it a day – but fortunately the start point was good enough to get away with it. Some elements are undeniably dated, such as the thick black bezel around the display and the basic 720p webcam, but with strong performance and an otherwise sleek design the laptop still holds up well. A good spread of ports help, and while I’m no fan of the fiddly Surface Connect socket its appearance will appeal to existing Surface owners with accessories they’re hanging onto. Next year Microsoft will have to make real changes, but in this iteration the Surface Laptop 5 can ride out one more year as an appealing option.
