It has one of the highest percentages of post- consumer plastic and a new environmentally friendly packaging. That said, it would have been nice to see the same things applied to one of the upper ThinkPad models instead of the SL-series from which the L-series is built. Being eco-friendly and offering high performance would be a big draw for a lot of consumers and companies as long as the price is right. While it's great that Lenovo has managed to increase their use of eco-friendly materials without significantly increasing the price, the more important goal might be applying the new philosophy to their entire lineup.

A Unique Specimen.The L-series is a brand-new addition to the Lenovo Thinkpad notebook portfolio. Apart from the previously tested L512 there is also a more compact 14-incher with the designation L412. Being similarly equipped as its brother, it should score similarly in the mobility department.

Highlights first: very good build quality, an excellent keyboard and touchpad, a good selection of input/output ports, and good overall performance. Now for the downsides; the first is battery life. Four and a half hours is average at best; ideally we were looking for another hour. Secondly, the 1366x768 screen resolution is too low for office productivity and makes multitasking difficult. Lastly, the $969 asking price is a bit high; Lenovo should either knock $100 off the price or include at least a two-year warranty standard. In the end, the Lenovo ThinkPad L420 is a very well-built machine and meets most of our expectations.

We wish the sound quality were better, but if a solid typing experience, good performance, and a budget-friendly price are what you're after, the ThinkPad L420 fits the bill.

On the other hand, we strongly recommend looking into the HP ProBook 450 G4 as well since it’s the more balanced solution. Another similar solution is Dell’s Latitude 15 3570.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" dalla leggenda inglese, novo (latino) per nuovo) è stata fondata nel 1984 come società cinese di commercio di computer. Nel 2004, l'azienda era il più grande produttore di laptop in Cina e, dopo aver acquisito la divisione PC di IBM nel 2005, il quarto più grande al mondo. Oltre a desktop e notebook, l'azienda produce monitor, proiettori, server, ecc. ed è specializzata nello sviluppo, produzione e commercializzazione di elettronica di consumo, personal computer, software, soluzioni aziendali e servizi correlati.
Nel 2016, l'azienda si è classificata al primo posto al mondo nelle vendite di computer. Lo deteneva ancora nel 2023 con una quota di mercato globale di circa il 23%. Importanti linee di prodotti sono Thinkpad, Legion e Ideapad.
Nel 2011 ha acquisito una partecipazione di maggioranza in Medion AG, un produttore europeo di hardware per computer. Nel 2014 è stata acquistata Motorola Mobility, che ha dato a Lenovo una spinta nel mercato degli smartphone.
Soltanto i giochi datasi possono essere giocati in modo fluido con questi chips grafici (se non richiedono troppe prestazioni). I cores con memoria grafica condivisa in questa categoria hanno il vantaggio delle minori emissioni di calore e della maggiore autonomia della batteria. Per ufficio, internet, image processing, e video editing queste schede grafiche sono utilizzabili senza particolari problematiche.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics:
Intel HD Graphics 3000: 3 imminenti (Q1 2011) schede grafiche integrate nel processore Intel Sandy Bridge (Core ix-2xxx). La 3000 / 200 è la versione più veloce internamente chiamata GT2 con 12 Execution Units (EUs).
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500M: Il core grafico dell'Intel GL40 e della GS40 sfrutta una GMA 4500MHD con un clock inferiore (400 contro 533 MHz). A causa della velocità inferiore del core, non c'è un supporto completo Blu-Ray Logo e le prestazioni di gioco sono leggermente inferiori.
La maggior parte dei giochi attuali può essere giocata in modo fluido. Ma preparatevi ad una riduzione delle presentazioni grafiche considerando le impostazioni di dettaglio basse e la risoluzione limitata. Tuttavia, queste schede forniscono ancora abbastanza potenza per le applicazioni da ufficio e la proiezioni di video (ma non per i video HD).
Intel HD Graphics 4000: Processore grafico high end tra i modelli Ivy Bridge. Offre una differente velocità clock nei diversi modelli di CPU (da ULV a desktop quad core) e di conseguenza con prestazioni variabili.
Intel HD Graphics 4600:
Scheda grafica integrata nel processore che si trova su vari modelli di CPU Haswell. Offre diverse velocità clock in base alla CPU.
Intel HD Graphics 5500:
Scheda grafica integrata (GT2) nei processori Core della Broadwell U-series (15 W TDP).
Ridurre la distanza delle Schede Grafiche per gli utenti che vogliono utilizzare il videogiochi. I nuovi giochi dovrebbero funzionare su queste schede, ma con riduzione dei dettagli e risoluzione mediocre.
Intel HD Graphics 620:
GPU integrata (GT2, 24 EUs) che si trova su alcuni modelli di CPU Kaby-Lake-Refresh (15 W ULV series). Tecnicamente identica alla precedente GPU Kaby-Lake chiamata HD Graphics 620.

Intel Core i3:
330M: La Core i3-330M è una 350M con un clock inferiore e di conseguenza manca della feature Turbo Boost ed ha un clock con un massimo di 2.13 GHz. Grazie all'Hyperthreading, possono essere processati 4 threads contemporaneamente. Nel pacchetto sono inclusi anche una scheda grafica integrata (GMA HD 3150) ed un controller di memoria DDR3.
5005U:
Processore dual-core ULV (ultra low voltage) Broadwell-based per notebooks e ultrabooks. Offre una GPU HD Graphics 5500 integrata ed Þ realizzato in 14 nm.
Intel Core i5:
2520M: Processore Dual-core basato sull'architettura Sandy Bridge con una scheda grafica integrata ed un controller di memoria dual-channel DDR3.
3210M: Veloce dual-core Ivy-Bridge-based, include una HD 4000 Graphics, e core clock 2.5 - 3.1 GHz
4330M:
Processore dual-core Haswell-based con un clock da 2.8 GHz con un supporto Turbo Boost fino a 3.5 GHz. Offre una GPU HD Graphics 4600 integrata ed un controller di memoria dual channel DDR3.
5200U:
Processore dual-core ULV (ultra low voltage) Broadwell-based per notebooks e ultrabooks. Offre una GPU HD Graphics 5500 integrata ed Þ realizzata in 14 nm.
Intel Core 2 Duo: Questo è il successore del Core Duo e del Core Solo con una pipeline più lunga ed il 5-20% di velocità in più senza avere maggiore consumo di energia. Come aggiunta al design del Core Duo esiste un quarto decoder, una unità amplificata SSE ed una unità logica aritmetica (ALU) addizionale. Il Core 2 Duo per portatili è identico al processore per desktop Core 2 Duo ma il processore per portatili lavora con un voltaggio inferiore (0.95 a 1188 Volt) ed un Frontside bus clock inferiore (1066 vs 667 MHz). Le prestazioni di portatili con clock equivalenti sono inferiori del 20-25% rispetto ai PCs Desktop a causa del Frontside bus clock inferiore e agli hard disks più lenti.
P8700: Processore dual core di classe media con 3 MB di level 3 cache ed un TDP da 25 Watt.
Intel Kaby Lake:
i7-7500U:
SoC Kaby-Lake based con due CPU cores con clock da at 2.7 a 3.5 GHz, HyperThreading e realizzato con un procedimento 14nm migliorato.
