Essendo uno dei primi smartphone 5G, il Huawei Mate 20 X 5G sa di esotico. Acquistando questo smartphone vi metterete in tasca un dispositivo che nessun altro possiede, ma per una buona ragione. Occorrerà ancora parrecchio tempo prima che possiate appieno del 5G e sfruttare al massimo uno smartphone simile. Ecco perché dovreste rifletterci bene prima di comprare uno smartphone 5G che deve anche essere compatibile con il mmWave. Il mio consiglio? Spendere la metà per acquistare il Huawei Mate 20 X.

Huawei Mate 20 X è una via di mezzo tra uno smartphone e un tablet: con i suoi 7,2” è massiccio se lo si fa rientrare nella prima categoria, è davvero compatto se invece lo si mette nella seconda. Al di là di tutto, nasce come telefono, dunque ha nelle sue dimensioni importanti un pregio e un difetto (un limite, più che altro) allo stesso tempo.

Huawei Mate 20 X è un ottimo smartphone per chi passa tanto tempo davanti allo smartphone per giocare o vedere contenuti multimediali, magari durante i propri viaggi in aereo o in treno. Con l'enorme quantità di schermo a disposizione sarà possibile godere al meglio di ogni tipo di contenuto e, secondo la mia opinione, una volta fatta l'abitudine alle sue dimensioni risulta un giusto compromesso tra smartphone e tablet.

Huawei ci ha confermato che il Mate 20 X in Italia non arriverà. Un peccato visto che una recente ricerca Strategy Analytics afferma come la gente ami i modelli dai 5,5 pollici in su. Aimed primarily at smartphone gamers and movie buffs, the massive 7.2-inch screen and fast processing engine are key selling points for the Huawei Mate 20 X. If photography is also an important factor, however, you can be confident of shooting some great images with Huawei’s super-sized smartphone. Its triple-camera setup ensures good results for ultra-wide and zoom shots, and the main camera’s Quad-Bayer sensor delivers excellent exposures in all lighting conditions. Some improvements to soft bokeh shots, a reduction in noise when using zoom indoors, and enhancing fine details across the board would help improve the device’s score further, however. Those issues aside, the Huawei Mate 20 X remains a very capable device for smartphone photography enthusiasts.

The Huawei Mate X records and plays audio better overall than any of the other phones we have tested, which is in line with its positioning as a device aimed at those who want an excellent multimedia experience. It even edged out the excellent Apple iPhone XS Max by a point. Use case scores were consistently high across all our use cases, including concert and video recording as well as meeting and memo audio recording. However, memo recording would benefit from a more directional microphone response so that it would be easier to understand the recorded voice over background noise. One quirk that doesn’t directly affect the sound, but does concern the user experience, is that the music player interface doesn’t allow full navigation of the music catalog when held in portrait orientation.

With practically the same specs as the Mate 20 Pro including the same excellent cameras, the Mate 20 X is a curious smartphone that we enjoyed using far more than we expected given the size. If you want a smaller phone then you have many other options but the Mate 20 X is flying the flag for screen real estate with build quality that is right out the top drawer. If you want the most screen possible, it might be for you. You lose the curved display, wireless charging, full water resistance and secure Face ID but for many that won’t matter if a huge display, outstanding camera and great performance are top of your list. If you want a normal size phone, get the Mate 20 Pro.

The Huawei Mate 20 X is not everyone's cup of tea because of that giant 7.2" screen. While it is a joy for gamers, it might be a nightmare as a daily driver because of that size. Overall, we feel that Huawei has certainly made a splash with these new phones. All three models look great, and their camera quality and displays seemed great in the short time we were able to spend with them. The Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro were easy enough to hold and operate with one hand, with only the minor difficulties of their curved glass fronts. The relatively larger Mate 20 X was definitely on the bulky side, usually requiring two hands to operate and being rather awkward to hold - this could be an acceptable trade-off, however, as the smartphone is positioned as a gaming and entertainment device. In terms of performance, all three phones felt rather snappy. We had no trouble with their UIs or multitasking, and even in the camera app. We also played about 10 minutes of Asphalt 9 Legends on the Mate 20 Pro, and felt no lag or discernible heating of the glass body.
