Gateway continues to offer some of the best bang-for-your-buck retail laptops. Remember the Gateway NV7915u? Back in our Spring 2010 retail roundup of laptops, the budget-priced 17-incher won our Best of Budget category, and also received an Editors' Choice recommendation. The Gateway NV7901u has a large screen, a Core i5 processor and very good graphics at a reasonable price, but leaving Blu-ray out of the package might be a deal-breaker for some.

Gateway's NV5929u is certainly a good value for those looking at a higher performance general purpose system. It is probably one of the only laptops to come equipped with an Intel Core i5 class mobile processor with Turbo Boost for under $600. With that it mind, the system does have a number of quirks such as a display with limited viewing angles and an unusual keyboard and trackpad design that can make it difficult to use in some situations.

Gateway's NV570P04u laptop really needs to be updated as the system feels very dated even though it does feature a touchscreen display. While it is relatively thin at just under 1.2-inches thick, it is still a fairly heavy system weight close to six pounds. Even with its weight, the system still exhibited a bit more flex than would have been desired.

Gateway:

Soltanto i giochi datasi possono essere giocati in modo fluido con questi chips grafici (se non richiedono troppe prestazioni). I cores con memoria grafica condivisa in questa categoria hanno il vantaggio delle minori emissioni di calore e della maggiore autonomia della batteria. Per ufficio, internet, image processing, e video editing queste schede grafiche sono utilizzabili senza particolari problematiche.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Scheda grafica intregrata basata sul chipset GM45 (Montevina). Più performante rispetto alla vecchia GMA X3100 grazie ha due shader in più ed ad un clock più elevato. Rimane, comunque, non consigliata per i giocatori più incalliti. Il processore video integrato è capace di codificare video HD (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2). Ad esempio permette la riproduzione di video HD compatibile con i requisiti del logo Blu-Ray, con il supporto nativo per unità Blu-Ray.

NVIDIA GeForce 310M: La GeForce 310M è il successore della GeFore G210M e si basa sullo stesso chip con un clock rate molto simile (velocità shader +30MHz a 1530MHz).

ATI Radeon HD 4250: Scheda grafica integrata (nel chipset RS880M) per processori AMD con supporto Avivo HD e tecnicamente è una HD 4200 con un clock superiore.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics:

Intel HD Graphics 2500: Fa parte delle recenti schede grafiche integrate sui processori Ivy Bridge (Core ix-3xxx). L'HD 2500 è la più lenta, chiamata GT1, ha meno unità di esecuzione (EUs) e solo un texture sampler - rispetto alla GT2 HD Graphics 4000.

La maggior parte dei giochi attuali può essere giocata in modo fluido. Ma preparatevi ad una riduzione delle presentazioni grafiche considerando le impostazioni di dettaglio basse e la risoluzione limitata. Tuttavia, queste schede forniscono ancora abbastanza potenza per le applicazioni da ufficio e la proiezioni di video (ma non per i video HD).

Intel Core 2 Duo: Questo è il successore del Core Duo e del Core Solo con una pipeline più lunga ed il 5-20% di velocità in più senza avere maggiore consumo di energia. Come aggiunta al design del Core Duo esiste un quarto decoder, una unità amplificata SSE ed una unità logica aritmetica (ALU) addizionale. Il Core 2 Duo per portatili è identico al processore per desktop Core 2 Duo ma il processore per portatili lavora con un voltaggio inferiore (0.95 a 1188 Volt) ed un Frontside bus clock inferiore (1066 vs 667 MHz). Le prestazioni di portatili con clock equivalenti sono inferiori del 20-25% rispetto ai PCs Desktop a causa del Frontside bus clock inferiore e agli hard disks più lenti.

T6600: Processore dual core Core 2 di fascia base con una piccola level 2 cache di 2MB senza funzioni di virtualizzazione.

Intel Core i5:

430M: Il Core i5-430M è una CPU dual core di media classe che sfrutta solo 3 MB di L3 Cache (rispetto alla I7-640M) ed ha un clock tra 2.26-2.53 GHz (Turbo Mode). Inoltre, nella 430M mancano VT-d, trusted Execution e funzioni AES. Grazie all'Hyperthreading, possono essere gestiti 4 threads contemporaneamente. Nel pacchetto sono incluse anche una scheda grafica integrata (Intel HD Graphics da 500-733 MHz) ed un controller memoria DDR3.

Intel Core i3:

330M: La Core i3-330M è una 350M con un clock inferiore e di conseguenza manca della feature Turbo Boost ed ha un clock con un massimo di 2.13 GHz. Grazie all'Hyperthreading, possono essere processati 4 threads contemporaneamente. Nel pacchetto sono inclusi anche una scheda grafica integrata (GMA HD 3150) ed un controller di memoria DDR3.

AMD Turion II:

Intel Pentium:

2117U: Processore dual-core Ultra Low Voltage basato sull'architettura Ivy Bridge con una scheda grafica integrata ed un controller di memoria dual-channel DDR3. A causa del marchio Pentium, molte features del core Ivy Bridge sono disattivate.

Questo è il tipico peso del portatili con diagonale del display da 14-16”.

3.3 kg:

Normalmente i portatili con diagonale da 17” pesano di più. Il peso è un po' eccessivo per un portatile da 15” ma accettabile per dispositivi destinati ad un utilizzo stazionario.
