You can upgrade but at this price you don’t get extras like Blu-ray, just a standard DVD rewriter, but for a family orientated notebook you won’t find any compromises. It manages to pack in the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 3GB of RAM and a whopping 320GB hard drive and still be affordable. There is even a dedicated gaming card, the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650, so you’ll be able to play games with ease. We really like this machine – it’s powerful, portable and for the configuration isn’t about to cost the earth.

The best part about a media center laptop is that you almost never have to worry about feature and performance limitations. Yeah, it's deskbound and unlikely to see the inside of a backpack, but its size means you can cram in all the newest technologies, with few restrictions. The Dell Studio 17 ($1,411 direct) has a mind-numbing list of current and new technologies, the most compelling of which is a 17.3-inch widescreen that supports multitouch and an Intel quad-core processor that can bolt through any hardcore application. And although I’m not sold on the idea of touchscreen laptops, the fact Dell isn’t charging a huge premium for it means the laptop’s overall score isn’t affected too much. Personally, though, I’d be very tempted to ditch the touchscreen in favour of the version with faster graphics and the dual-core i7-620M processor.

In fact, the only part of the package that doesn't impress entirely is the touchscreen. It's not bad, exactly, but not as responsive as it could be. If you have a touch-sensitive phone like the Google Nexus One or the iPhone, it may disappoint using the multi-touch screen here because it's not as quick to respond as it should be. The keyboard is too spongy for comfortable typing, but this is one of only a small number of disappointments on a big, powerful machine.

The new Studio 17 is an impressive laptop, but we're not totally convinced there's a big market for touch-screen laptops. Although fun at first, it wasn't long before we cast the touch-screen controls aside in favour of the keyboard and touch pad method. On the plus side, it's reasonably priced considering the fast processor, large screen and mid-range graphics card, so it's not like you're paying a huge premium for the touch-screen.

Before the iPhone was launched, the mobile networks were worried that the ‘multitouch’ control system wouldn’t catch on. How wrong they were – it’s now a standard feature for smartphones, and laptops and monitors are only just catching up. Dell: Dell è un produttore statunitense (con sede in Texas) di hardware per computer fondato nel 1984 ed è uno dei maggiori produttori internazionali sia in termini di quota di mercato che di modelli di notebook. La sua linea di prodotti comprende desktop, notebook, sistemi di archiviazione, monitor, server, stampanti, elettronica di consumo e periferiche. Dell offre laptop adatti a varie applicazioni, come laptop aziendali, laptop da gioco, ultra portatili e workstation. I laptop aziendali Dell delle serie Latitude e Precision sono un'opzione per utenti professionali e aziende.

Nel 2023, Dell deteneva una quota di mercato di circa il 17% delle vendite globali di PC, classificandosi al terzo posto dopo Lenovo e HP.

Per gli appassionati di giochi, il marchio Alienware di Dell è per i notebook da gioco.

Soltanto i giochi datasi possono essere giocati in modo fluido con questi chips grafici (se non richiedono troppe prestazioni). I cores con memoria grafica condivisa in questa categoria hanno il vantaggio delle minori emissioni di calore e della maggiore autonomia della batteria. Per ufficio, internet, image processing, e video editing queste schede grafiche sono utilizzabili senza particolari problematiche.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650: La HD 3650 è una scheda di classe media (nel 2008) è la possiamo rapportare alla 8600M GT di invidia. È prodotta con un processo a 55nm e grazie al motore video Avivo, la scheda grafica può supportare il processore in molte operazioni video compresa la decodifica di video HD.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Scheda grafica intregrata basata sul chipset GM45 (Montevina). Più performante rispetto alla vecchia GMA X3100 grazie ha due shader in più ed ad un clock più elevato. Rimane, comunque, non consigliata per i giocatori più incalliti. Il processore video integrato è capace di codificare video HD (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2). Ad esempio permette la riproduzione di video HD compatibile con i requisiti del logo Blu-Ray, con il supporto nativo per unità Blu-Ray.

La maggior parte dei giochi attuali può essere giocata in modo fluido. Ma preparatevi ad una riduzione delle presentazioni grafiche considerando le impostazioni di dettaglio basse e la risoluzione limitata. Tuttavia, queste schede forniscono ancora abbastanza potenza per le applicazioni da ufficio e la proiezioni di video (ma non per i video HD).

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650: La ATI Mobilty Radon HD 4650 della AMD è una scheda grafica DirectX 10.1 di fascia media per portatili. Tecnicamente è una Mobility Radeon HD 4670 con un clock più lento.
Le prestazioni di gioco della GPU sono leggermente al di sotto della HD 4670. La maggior parte dei giochi DirectX 9 (come Call of Duty 4, F.E.A.R., o Unreal Tournament 3) dovrebbero essere giocabili con dettagli medio-alti (in 1024x768). I giochi pesanti in DX10 del 2008 come Crysis funzionano in maniera fluida solo con dettagli medio-bassi.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Questo è il successore del Core Duo e del Core Solo con una pipeline più lunga ed il 5-20% di velocità in più senza avere maggiore consumo di energia. Come aggiunta al design del Core Duo esiste un quarto decoder, una unità amplificata SSE ed una unità logica aritmetica (ALU) addizionale. Il Core 2 Duo per portatili è identico al processore per desktop Core 2 Duo ma il processore per portatili lavora con un voltaggio inferiore (0.95 a 1188 Volt) ed un Frontside bus clock inferiore (1066 vs 667 MHz). Le prestazioni di portatili con clock equivalenti sono inferiori del 20-25% rispetto ai PCs Desktop a causa del Frontside bus clock inferiore e agli hard disks più lenti.

T8300: La Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 era al tempo del suo lancio una veloce CPU dual-core per portatili con 3 MB di level 2 cache.

T6500: CPU dual-core di fascia base basato sul Penryn con una piccola level 2 cache da 2MB ed FSB800. Simile al T6570 ma senza  VT-x.

Intel Core i7:

720QM: Il Core i7-720QM è il Core i7 Quad più lento del 2009 ed ha un clock tra 1.6 e 2.8 GHz (grazie al Turbo Mode). Di conseguenza, il processore combina i vantaggi delle veloci CPUs single core e delle lente CPUs quad-core. Rispetto alle più veloci CPUs Core i7, la 720QM ha solo 6MB di L3 Cache.

Intel Core i5:

520M: Il Core i5-520M ha solo 3 MB di L3 Cache (rispetto alla I7-640M) ed un clock tra 2.4-2.93 GHz (Turbo Mode). Grazie all'Hyperthreading, possono essere processati 4 threads contemporaneamente. Nel pacchetto è inclusa anche una scheda grafica (GMA HD 3150) ed un controller memoria DDR3.
