The VAIO P Series is unique, and once you remove the bloatware it becomes nippy enough to handle basic tasks without making you want to bang your head against the wall in frustration. Even in this leaner form, however, we can't recommend it. At $1599, it's still too expensive, and we remain unconvinced that the gains are worth the loss in usability compared to a low-cost ultraporta.

But the $899 price tag ensures that this secondary notebook will attract only a niche crowd, and you don't even get a 6-cell battery for the base price. Some may prefer the Viliv N5, which has a smaller keyboard but is even lighter than the Sony while costing $250 less. Nevertheless, if you want a notebook with a premium design that can slip into a purse or a coat pocket, the VAIO P is worth a look.

Both its screen and its keyboard flirt with, but just miss, being too small, making it the smallest usable PC we've seen and making other netbooks look like bruisers. As a way to turn heads while getting work done, it has few peers. Against that, it's shockingly expensive and has a short-lived battery. Can we recommend it? Only for status seekers. Are we jealous of the status seekers? Absolutely

EN→ITThe VPCP11S1E might be small and have an Atom processor, but its most definitely not a netbook. No, this is a luxury device aimed at those who are happy to pay a premium for something thats a bit different. And it certainly has a lot going for it, not least built-in 3G and GPS, along with its ultra-lightweight design. The keyboard also impresses, but using the trackpoint and/or mini touchpad can be tricky, while the high resolution 8in screen isnt particularly easy on the eye. Moreover, I suspect most Reg readers, myself included, would shudder at the thought of splashing out £800 on such an under-powered device, no matter how pretty it might be.

EN→ITIn spite of an early model that didn't convince us and which didn't convince Sony's European clients either, Sony has persevered with the Vaio P, a unique netbook. In spite of a few persistent faults, the new Vaio P is now much more usable thanks to various modifications. It is now more than a sexy, high-design product. Its size, quietness and the ease of use of the keyboard make it a good alternative to netbooks which are gaining in size. It does however cost twice as much.

EN→ITThe first Sony Vaio P-series mini-laptop left us with mixed feelings. We liked its tiny size and ambitious design, but not its high price and lack of a trackpad. It's hard to beat the Sony Vaio P-series VPCP11S1E/P in terms of sheer portability, but it's very expensive considering its modest components. We like the new additions, such as the trackpad, but you'd be better off with a cheaper, more powerful netbook.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 500:
Queste schede grafiche per portatili non sono adatte al gaming. Anche se dovessero funzionare, ci sarebbero diversi errori grafici e un frame rate molto basso. Questi chips non sono affatto per i gamers! Applicazioni internet e da ufficio, invece non sono problematiche per queste GPUs.

Intel Atom:
La Intel Atom è una serie a 64-Bit di microprocessori (non tutti i modelli supportano 64bit) per portatili economici e piccoli (chiamati comunemente netbooks), MIDs, o UMPCs (Ultra Mibile Persona Computer). La particolarità della nuova architettura è l'esecuzione "in order" (al posto della consueta e più veloce esecuzione "out of order"). Di conseguenza il transistor count della serie Atom è abbastanza inferiore, e quindi più economico da produrre. Inoltre, il consumo di energia è molto contenuto. Le prestazioni per Megahertz sono ovviamente peggiori rispetto ai vecchi Pentium 3M (1,2 GHz alla pari di 1.6 GHz Atom).
Z540: Processore Atom a risparmio energetico (più efficiente rispetto alla serie N) da 1.83 GHz e di conseguenza un po' più veloce rispetto ai soliti Atoms da 1.6 GHz.

8.0": Questo è un formato molto piccolo, usato per gli UMPC, Netbooks e Subnotebooks. Difficilmente esistono modelli con questo tipo di formato di display. Lavorarci a lungo non è comodo. Questi minuscoli display sono destinati all'utilizzo in ambienti aperti. Il vantaggio è, che i mini-notebook possono avere dimensioni ridotte e possono essere trasportati facilmente. Inoltre gli schermi minuscoli hanno il vantaggio che richiedono poca energia, il che migliora l'autonomia della batteria e di conseguenza la mobilità. Lo svantaggio è che la lettura di testi è estenuante per gli occhi. Risoluzioni elevate difficilmente potranno essere utilizzate.

0.6 kg: Questo subnotebook è uno dei più leggeri di tutti i portatili e può essere trasportato con estrema semplicità. Difficilmente si trovano altri modelli in questa fascia di peso.
7-9 pollici sono la norma per questa categoria di peso.
