From a strictly technical perspective, the MSI Wind NB U120H is a welcome update to a successful formula. Nothing has really suffered in this version, and anyone who purchases the netbook will be happy with it. The real problem here is money. Sure, they added 3.5G, but they also added to the price tag. The netbook will stay alive for a good 3 hours, which is decent for standard use, but you end up paying for a 6-cell battery that should really be giving you two or three more hours of work time. Considering that the Wind U100 only costs $350 at Best Buy right now, I doubt it will be worth it to consumers to spend $250 more just for mobile connectivity.

The MSI Wind U120 isn't so much as an upgraded 10-inch netbook from the company but more of a redesign. The case has more squared corners and mixed color scheme that give it a sleek design. Many of the features remain the same though including the very well designed keyboard that is comfortable to use. The main purpose of the redesign was to reduce costs and the Wind U120 is very affordable, but that price also comes with RAM that can't be upgraded and a battery life that is on the lower end of six cell netbook models.

An update to the original MSI Wind, the U120 boasts a snazzier chassis and an aggressive price—but the competition has caught up. MSI skyrocketed to the top of the mini-notebook field last June when netbooks with 10-inch displays were rare and when no other netbook, regardless of size, could tout more than five hours of battery life. The MSI Wind U120 is a solid netbook with a comfortable keyboard and a more stylish design than its predecessor. It’s also more aggressively priced. At $379, the U120 costs $70 less than the U100. However, the older U100 lasts 45 minutes longer on a charge, and both the Samsung NC10 ($449) and the HP Mini 2140 ($529) last more than 2 hours longer, although both systems are more expensive. If you care more about price than endurance, then the U120 is worth considering.

Built firmly on the foundations laid down by the original Wind, MSI's new netbook baby, the Wind U120H, is more of the same, but with a slight twist. Everything that was good about the erstwhile MSI netbook standard-bearer is here too, including super-bright screen, decent keyboard and above-average build quality. MSI adds to this by including an HSDPA card, internally, that when paired with an appropriate SIM, provides go-anywhere connectivity. The Wind U120H represents a minor update from the incumbent. It's better in some ways (HSDPA) but not as good in some (lack of RAM expandability), but choice is always a good thing for the consumer.

The netbook market is now a year old, and it's worth reflecting on how things have changed over that time, particularly when it comes to considering a refresh of one of our favourites from last years crop of netbook models: the MSI Wind. While the design and features don't look as cutting edge as they once did, this is still a great netbook, and if you're after an all-in-one solution, it looks like a good option.

All-in-one PCs have been around for ages and it’s not hard to understand their appeal. They feature the wire-free tidiness of a laptop, combined with the big screen of a desktop PC. The concept sustains many admirers, with Apple’s iMac range doing very well indeed with just such a form factor. This AE1900 is an attractively designed touchscreen PC, which is easy to use and looks good to boot. However, it’s not really powerful enough for heavy duty computing or gaming and the screen resolution is quite low. It’s also running XP Home, which means no Media Center and no free upgrade to Windows 7.

The Wind U123 brings a lot of muscle to the netbook arena: It’s slightly faster and has a much longer battery life than any we’ve previously tested, though the nine-cell battery adds bulk to the otherwise sleek netbook. And the bright screen is sure to win fans. But there are certainly netbooks out there that are lighter, easier to upgrade, and offer similar performance, even if they can’t quite match the battery life.

MSI’s Wind U123 is a solid value. The MSI Wind U123 is essentially a slightly modified version of their U120 netbook. It shares the same exterior appearance, keyboard and trackpad design. The biggest difference is a move to a slightly faster Atom N280 processor and a 802.11n compatible wireless. While some models of the U123 comes with a 9-cell battery, the U123-019US uses a 6-cell battery which results in a below average running time compared to similarly netbooks. Still, at just $350, it is a very affordable netbook considering some of its features.

The original MSI Wind burst onto the scene in spectacular fashion, nabbing the first-ever Editors' Choice in the netbook category. Of course, it helped that this fledgling field wasn't the mob scene it is today. The Wind U123 (003US) ($385 street) is a nice follow-up, and it's full of life—battery life, that is. Its 87Wh battery is the biggest battery yet found on a netbook, though it was added at the expense of making this model look like the Hunchback of Notre Dame (though the hump is on the bottom). Overall the U123 could use more of a lift, as its performance scores fell well short of the competition, and everything else is just middle of the road. The only differentiating feature in the MSI Wind U123 (003US) netbook is the humongous battery, which sticks out like a sore thumb.

At first glance, the MSI Wind U123 looks to be just a restyled update of the Wind U100, a 2008 model that was one of the first 10.2-inch netbooks. Most of the changes are appreciated but not spectacular: The MSI Wind U123 sports a restyled chassis, as well as the slightly faster Intel Atom N280 processor that was introduced on the Asus Eee PC 1000HE. Though most of the MSI Wind U123's specs follow the standard netbook formula, its incredible battery life makes it a standout.

This netbook’s 12+ hours of battery life is impressive, but the competition offers better designs. The MSI Wind U110 is longest running netbook yet, but it’s design is stuck in the past. At $429, the U110 is $30 more expensive than the Ion-powered HP Mini 311, which offers better graphics and a larger screen (but less than half the battery life) and the Toshiba mini NB205 (N330BL), which has a better design, keyboard, and touchpad (but over 3 hours less juice). The Wind U110’s epic endurance is an impressive feat, but its tradeoffs are too numerous to ignore.

MSI:

Queste schede grafiche per portatili non sono adatte al gaming. Anche se dovessero funzionare, ci sarebbero diversi errori grafici e un frame rate molto basso. Questi chips non sono affatto per i gamers! Applicazioni internet e da ufficio, invece non sono problematiche per queste GPUs.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Il nuovo core di grafica Intel® GMA 950 è un motore grafico intelligente e dai tempi di risposta rapidi integrato nel chipset presente sulla scheda madre. Non propriamente adatta per giocare.

Intel Atom:

La Intel Atom è una serie a 64-Bit di microprocessori (non tutti i modelli supportano 64bit) per portatili economici e piccoli (chiamati comunemente netbooks), MIDs, o UMPCs (Ultra Mibile Persona Computer). La particolarità della nuova architettura è l'esecuzione "in order" (al posto della consueta e più veloce esecuzione "out of order"). Di conseguenza il transistor count della serie Atom è abbastanza inferiore, e quindi più economico da produrre. Inoltre, il consumo di energia è molto contenuto. Le prestazioni per Megahertz sono ovviamente peggiori rispetto ai vecchi Pentium 3M (1,2 GHz alla pari di 1.6 GHz Atom).

N270: CPU single core economico e lento, a basso consumo, per Netbook. A causa dell'esecuzione in-order, le prestazioni per MHz sono peggiori rispetto ad un processore Core Solo o ad un Celeron M.

230: Processore Intel Atom pensato per i Nettops (piccoli desktops) con minori funzioni di risparmio energetico (i.e. manca lo speedstep) ed un TDP più elevato rispetto alla simile Atom N270.

N280: CPU single core economico e lento, a basso consumo, per Netbook. A causa dell'esecuzione in-order, le prestazioni per MHz sono peggiori rispetto ad un processore Core Solo o ad un Celeron M. Rispetto alla N270, la N280 ha un clock minimamente superiore ed offre un maggiore FSB.

Z530: Versione a risparmio energetico dell'Atom N270 con un supporto Virtualization addizionale e maggiori tecnologie per il risparmio energetico. Le prestazioni sono identiche alla N270 e di conseguenza adatte solo per operazioni poco impegnative.
