The input devices are another key selling point. The backlit keyboard is cozy for typing and it’s also quiet. The touchpad is smooth and fast. The I/O looks good with its two Thunderbolt 4 ports and Nano-SIM card slot for optional 4G or 5G connectivity. Despite the good portability, the performance for a laptop with a Raptor Lake U chip seems normal. In our case, the Core i7-1355U can maintain high P and E core clocks in short and Medium loads at the expense of up to 94°C temperature. Still, the keyboard doesn’t feel scoring hot during 100% CPU stress and the fans aren’t too noisy. Yes, the comfort under load is on point. Just like many other small and thin devices, the memory is soldered. This isn’t a big issue since the maximum possible capacity is 64GB of LPDDR5x-6000 MHz. Unfortunately, there is just one M.2 slot for Gen 4 SSDs. The autonomous life on a single charge is good for a notebook with a 4K OLED panel and a 57Wh battery – 8 hours and 20 minutes of Web browsing, or 7 hours and 9 minutes of video playback.

Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 8 is built for business, sacrificing frills on the altar of productivity. It's a little pricier than competitors that have it beat on performance, can't handle games, and is a bit dull to look at, to boot. And that's okay! That "ThinkPad" pedigree, while arguably mostly a branding exercise, provides a value that's harder to measure than synthetic benchmarks and discrete GPUs. A simple design, bloat-free user experience, and the durable chassis are part of that premium that sets business-class hardware apart. I'd argue it's worth paying extra for that — mostly. The folding hinge is arguably useful to many, but I've also found the full tablet experience I get from Microsoft's Surface lineup to be more my speed, and would lean towards the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11 instead.

The ThinkPad X1 Yoga isn't the bargain that Lenovo's 14-inch Yoga 9i or Lenovo Yoga 7i Gen 7 are, but business laptops cost more than consumer models when individually priced. Our Gen 8 review unit doesn't have Intel vPro manageability, but it has MIL-STD 810H sturdiness and a three-year courier or carry-in warranty as distinct advantages over civilian convertibles. If you (or your company's fleet-buying discount) can afford it, the X1 Yoga is a splendid office 2-in-1 that stands proudly alongside the superlative X1 Carbon. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 8 is considerably more impressive—and not much more expensive—than Lenovo's small-business 2-in-1, the Lenovo ThinkBook 14s Yoga Gen 3, and it earns our Editors' Choice award in the category.
