Fino a pochi anni fa ai portatili mancava la potenza. Quando questa è arrivata abbiamo dovuto fare i conti con un’autonomia estremamente limitata. Ora ROG e AMD sono riuscite a unire tutti i pregi di un portatile dalle prestazioni elevate a quelli di un notebook pensato per la mobilità, un risultato che solo poco tempo fa sembrava irraggiungibile. Un successo in piena regola e di cui se ne sono accorti un po’ tutti in giro per il mondo, tanto da portare le linee produttive di AMD allo stremo. Non stupitevi quindi se questi processori sono difficili da trovare o se i prezzi sono più alti di quelli di listino, la richiesta purtroppo è stata troppo elevata. Con un prezzo di 1799€ per la variante con display Full HD è davvero difficile trovare di meglio, in attesa di una risposta di Intel, che arriverà a settembre con i processori Tiger Lake.

In Italia questo nuovo Zephyrus verrà venduto nella stessa configurazione da noi provata, con l’unica differenza del display QuadHD a 60Hz, a 1799 euro, e quindi direi proprio che siamo di fronte ad una delle soluzioni più interessanti per quanto riguarda la prima metà di questo 2020. Non costa poco, sono sempre 1800 euro e non è una cifra alla portata di tutti. Diciamo però che se potete spenderli questo notebook offre prestazioni che troviamo spesso in alternative anche molto più costos. Alternative? Con questo form factor direi solo il Razer Blade Stealth che non è però venduto ufficialmente in Italia, oppure, se lo trovate perché ormai fuori produzione, un Dell Alienware di un paio di anni fa con pannello OLED da 13 pollici.

Acquistate ad occhi chiusi ROG Zephyrus G14: io lo farei! Questo portatile di ASUS si è rivelato uno dei migliori del momento (e di sempre), grazie ad un raro connubio di qualità in ogni ambito. Piccolo e robusto, dotato di una tastiera comoda ed un touchpad scorrevole, capace di performance superiori a soluzioni ben più ingombranti e costose, e con un'autonomia fuori dal comune in questa fascia. Qualche piccola carenza qua e là c'è, ma è molto difficile trovare un prodotto così ben riuscito a 360°. Applausi ad AMD per aver realizzato il (suo) miglior processore per notebook di sempre, e ad ASUS per averlo saputo valorizzare a dovere.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 is truly a marvel. It manages to pack into this incredibly small form factor the power throughput of machines that need to be much bigger. As much of an engineering marvel this is in every right, it still struggles with dissipating heat in an effective manner. The keyboard can get unusably hot with tasks like gaming and rendering going on, which is incredibly disappointing. Thankfully, the AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS does not throttle at any point, which is good. The laptop's LED-studded Anime Matrix display is every bit worth the hype, but the novelty wears off pretty soon. Overall, for the money, you could buy laptops that deliver far better performance, but with the Zephyrus G14, you're paying for a good amount power packed into a very compact form-factor.

Asus could surely do something both those temperatures though, by providing a Gaming-optimized power profile that would limit the overpowered CPU, allowing it to run cooler with games. That should not be hard to implement since the profile seems to exist already, but it only kicks in automatically when playing games on an external monitor, with the laptop’s lid closed. AMD has traditionally targeted at price-conscious consumers and I will be surprised if ASUS steers the Zephyrus G14 towards the same price direction as their Intel-based products.
