What we are looking at is an incomparable laptop. There’s nothing quite like it in terms of productivity and gaming performance, even the price of more than $4000 is not that frightening, considering that less productive laptops cost almost the same. Yes, you can build your own setup for a price like this. It will even include a monitor, peripherals, and a webcam (yes, its absence bothers me). But even with a Mini-ITX case, it won’t be as compact and elegant as ROG STRIX SCAR 17 SE. The best comparison here is a sports car: this is not the best option for the daily commute, or a shopping day in the mall, it may be not the best all-rounder car overall, but people just can’t get their eyes out off it, and it absolutely shines on the track. ASUS ROG STRIX SCAR 17 SE is a sports car – it draws attention and crushes other laptops when it comes to game performance. And while it’s not suitable for your daily working routine, there’s no lack of fans of this game-only approach. After all, this top-spec laptop, just like the limited edition Lamborghini or Ferrari is already sold out, at least in Ukraine.

In modalità prestazioni l'ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17 G733PY riesce a combinare performance estremamente elevate con una rumorosità decisamente più contenuta rispetti a tutti gli altri modelli paragonabili per caratteristiche. È merito anche del processore AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX, eccezionale in potenza bruta e ottimo anche per giocare quando affiancato a una NVIDIA GeForce RTX di punta come in questo caso specifico. Ovviamente c'è sempre da tenere in considerazione il prezzo che, pur risultando leggermente più abbordabile del solito, risulta comunque molto elevato, al punto da farci storcere il naso di fronte a certi compromessi in relazione alla connettività e alla luminanza dello schermo.

Nella valutazione di questo ROG Strix SCAR 17 (2023) G733, almeno nella configurazione testata, ci manca un tassello fondamentale: il prezzo. Infatti, il notebook con la RTX 4090 non si trova ancora in commercio, mentre la configurazione con RTX 4080, 16 GB di memoria e SSD da 1 TB si trova a 3000-3300 euro. Possiamo ipotizzare un listino tra 3500-3800 euro per il modello da noi testato, ma non è da escludere che tocchi i 4000 euro visto che ASUS ROG di solito non lesina su questo aspetto. Anche così, però, il prezzo sarebbe adeguato se non inferiore ad altri notebook con RTX 4090 basati su CPU Intel che troviamo in vendita su alcuni shop. Questo non significa che 3500 o 4000 euro siano pochi, sono tantissimi, ma chi è disposto e può spenderli sappia che per la categoria e lo stato odierno dei listini, non sono così tanti.

The upgradability is good – two SODIMMs for up to 64GB of DDR5-4800MHz and two M.2 slots compatible with Gen 4 SSDs. We just wanted to see faster memory here (at least the device has 1Rx8 sticks, which is fine) because the performance of the AMD CPUs can be seriously boosted with snappy RAM. Aside from that, even with not-so-fast memory, the CPU is still a beast. Interestingly, the NVMe gets hot (61°C) while benchmarking but there is no sign of throttling. However, the SSD thermals are normal in standard usage. The keyboard is great – it has a per-key RGB backlight and it’s comfortable for both typing and gaming (and it’s quiet). The touchpad is fast and smooth but it’s a bit noisy for work. The build quality is good with few exceptions here and there. The I/O didn’t offer even a single Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 connector but still, the selection is good with two USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) ports and a 2.5G LAN. With that out of the way, we can conclude that the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 17 G733 (2023) is a gaming powerhouse.

There is no doubt that the latest version of AMD’s already impressive Dragon Range Ryzen R9 7945H CPU has moved the goalposts regarding gaming performance. The ROG Strix Scar 17 X3D can run games even faster than MSI’s monstrous Titan GT77 and leaves other RTX 4090 machines we’ve tested, like the Medion Erazer Beast X40, in its dust. The outstanding performance does put into sharp relief the fact that the basic design of the ROG Strix Scar 17 is now getting rather long in the tooth and has been supplanted by the ROG Strix Scar 18 in the Asus ROG hierarchy. I’m sure there are good reasons why Asus has taken this route, but it still leaves the consumer paying top dollar for an old design of car, albeit one with a new engine.

AMD did it. It brought 3D V-Cache to the mobile space, and it made the Strix Scar X3D a blisteringly powerful laptop that blows the competition out of the water. For those who have $3,700 on hand, the calculus should be pretty simple: buy the X3D if frame rates are your sole priority and you want the best of the best. The minute you start to care about other stuff (namely, battery life, portability, or any semblance of webcam quality), you’ll probably want to look elsewhere. Personally, I’m more interested in what the X3D represents to the gaming laptop space. When testing this, I was reminded of the time when I was testing the ROG Zephyrus G14 back in 2020. I remember checking those numbers again and again. AMD had shattered our understanding of what a gaming laptop could do. And I think it may have just done that again.

AMD's Ryzen 9 7945HX3D processor inside this machine is an excellent performer all around; single-thread performance is very good, multi-threaded performance is right up there with the best, and it's a gaming champ. The GeForce RTX 4090 in the ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17 X3D offered killer performance too, though it didn’t take the top spot across the board versus the larger MSI Titan GT77 HX. The ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17 X3D also offers somewhat more tame acoustics and thermals than some competing high-end gaming notebooks. We're not sure of exact pricing just yet, but we expect the ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17 X3D to drop in competitively as well. It's going to demand a pretty penny, of course, considering its class-leading performance and features, but like the original ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17, we expect the 3D V-Cache enabled version to weigh in relatively competitive.

That would be fair given that this is the first time AMD, or anyone, has put 3D V-Cache into a mobile processor, and the best-in-class products typically demand a premium price tag. 90% Asus ROG Strix Scar X3D review: AMD’s new chip is a game-changer

AMD did it. It brought 3D V-Cache to the mobile space, and it made the Strix Scar X3D a blisteringly powerful laptop that blows the competition out of the water. For those who have $3,700 on hand, the calculus should be pretty simple: buy the X3D if frame rates are your sole priority and you want the best of the best. The minute you start to care about other stuff (namely, battery life, portability, or any semblance of webcam quality), you’ll probably want to look elsewhere. Personally, I’m more interested in what the X3D represents to the gaming laptop space. When testing this, I was reminded of the time when I was testing the ROG Zephyrus G14 back in 2020. I remember checking those numbers again and again. AMD had shattered our understanding of what a gaming laptop could do. And I think it may have just done that again.

AMD's Ryzen 9 7945HX3D processor inside this machine is an excellent performer all around; single-thread performance is very good, multi-threaded performance is right up there with the best, and it's a gaming champ. The GeForce RTX 4090 in the ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17 X3D offered killer performance too, though it didn’t take the top spot across the board versus the larger MSI Titan GT77 HX. The ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17 X3D also offers somewhat more tame acoustics and thermals than some competing high-end gaming notebooks. We're not sure of exact pricing just yet, but we expect the ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17 X3D to drop in competitively as well. It's going to demand a pretty penny, of course, considering its class-leading performance and features, but like the original ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17, we expect the 3D V-Cache enabled version to weigh in relatively competitive.

That would be fair given that this is the first time AMD, or anyone, has put 3D V-Cache into a mobile processor, and the best-in-class products typically demand a premium price tag. From our testing of the ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17, the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D truly performs like a desktop replacement processor should, with the added advantage for gamers in titles that can use the additional L3 cache. As stated, we would love to see a list of games provided by developers or AMD from in-house testing, so gamers and users can make informed buying decisions based on the 3D V-Cache alone.

Compared to the model we reviewed last year, the new ROG Strix SCAR 17 has lost unnecessary elements (such as the UV flashlight and KeyStone), which you won't have to overpay for when buying a flagship laptop. Yes, its price has indeed become lower, although it is still not a cheap desktop replacement. But with an AMD processor, the user will also get perhaps the best performance, and the quality of all other elements remains at a very high level. There are also some minimal differences (there are fewer speakers, but a webcam has appeared), although for the most part they do not play a significant role. So, in the end, ROG Strix SCAR 17 is still one of the best options for gaming and demanding tasks if your budget allows you to spend 159,999 UAH on a new laptop.
