Abbiamo già accennato ai servizi Google, ma nei mesi scorsi l'embargo degli Stati Uniti è stato esteso anche ai componenti hardware, impedendo a qualunque azienda che utilizzi macchinari o know-how americani di fornire parti a Huawei. Considerato che Huawei impiega le linee di produzione a 5nm di TSMC per i suoi processori top di gamma di ultima generazione, è davvero un miracolo che siano riusciti a produrre scorte di chip a sufficienza prima del blocco della produzione imposto dagli USA, e quindi ci riteniamo quasi fortunati a poter provare questi eccezionali SoC sul Mate 40 Pro.

È davvero difficile trovare dei punti deboli: volendo essere molto puntigliosi potrei criticare l’assenza di un display a 120Hz, oramai diffuso anche su smartphone di fascia più bassa, e i tanti “suggerimenti” di applicazioni, comunque non eccessivamente invadenti.

anni, grazie a un comparto fotografico eccezionale, a un’autonomia solo discreta ma che può contare su una ricarica rapidissima, a un ottimo display e a un processore, il Kirin 9000, che ha pochi rivali in fatto di potenza ed efficienza. Dall’altro lato abbiamo una backcover che trattiene davvero troppo le ditate, un notch frontale di dimensioni generose ma soprattutto un ecosistema software ancora in costruzione, che limita le potenzialità del telefono. Il prezzo di 1249 euro testimonia la volontà di Huawei di non riposizionarsi in una fascia più bassa, certo l’hardware del Mate 40 Pro sarebbe stato più appetibile a un costo più competitivo, ma la casa cinese ha preferito proseguire con la strada tracciata in questi anni, ovvero puntare al top, anche al costo di ripercussioni sulle vendite, viste le limitazioni rispetto ai concorrenti.

HUAWEI Mate 40 Pro ci pone una domanda molto spiacevole a cui rispondere: vale la pena pagare il prezzo di 1.249€ per acquistare uno smartphone come questo? Ad un primo sguardo la mancanza dei servizi di Google potrebbe effettivamente frenare gli entusiasmi per uno smartphone sicuramente costoso alla pari della concorrenza. Non è però più possibile fermarsi alle apparenze perché vero non ci sono i servizi di Google ma ora ci sono i servizi di HUAWEI e praticamente quello che possiamo fare con questi è quello che faremmo con quelli di Mountain View. Mancano alcune applicazioni ancora ma quello che solitamente facciamo con uno smartphone odiernamente lo possiamo fare tranquillamente con un device HUAWEI con il vantaggio che qui otteniamo qualcosa in più.

La cosa più interessante di Huawei Mate 40 Pro non è tanto l’aspetto tecnico, dove ovviamente è da riferimento ma ce lo si aspettava, bensì nell’esperienza che riesce a dare a distanza di poco più di 1 anno dal ban commerciale con gli Stati Uniti, che inizialmente aveva rallentato la corsa del colosso cinese. Oggi tra AppGallery, i vari servizi Huawei, Petal Search, Petal Maps, Huawei Docs la mancanza delle App di Google inizia a farsi sentire molto meno, di fatto guadagnandosi sempre di più una certa autonomia, e libertà.

I really wanted too like the Mate 40 Pro and there are certain elements to ut that I do really enjoy the design is great (with the notable exclusion of the camera array). The power being delivered by the phone is fantastic. The screen is beautiful and is on par with the best from Samsung and Apple. The phone feels great in the hand as well. All these things are great and set the phone to a very high standard. It is just such a shame that the phone is in my opinion stymied for the Western market due in most part to an Orange skinned lunatic that was (thankfully no more) in charge of the American Government.

All we can say is that we're sad it's come to this, and Huawei would have had one of the main flagship contenders of the year, sales-wise, in 2020, if politics would have stayed out of the mobile space. Alas, things are the way they are, and so we need to judge products based on what they are and not what they could have been. The Mate 40 Pro is an excellent smartphone with a few downsides. If you can live with those, including not knowing what exactly the future will bring in a year or two, software-wise, then it's definitely worthy of your attention and hard-earned cash.
