Notebook di elevata qualità, il Dell Studio XPS 16 offre prestazioni particolarmente elevate ed è l’ideale per utenti molto esigenti. Sono sicuramente da evidenziare l’unità Blu-Ray, la porta HDMI, la scheda grafica, lo slot di memoria, il display LED di alta qualità,la qualità costruttiva mentre va anche detto che l'autonomia non è molto elevata e la cover lucida facilita le ditate.

The Dell Studio XPS 16 is a good-looking entertainment notebook of reasonable build quality and decent portability (considering its size). It packs a stunningly vibrant screen, along with some gaming punch. While it has some minor flaws, particularly the amount of heat it pumps out during gaming, it is a great buy for those who can afford its $2000+ pricetag. As a footnote, during the composition of this review, the speakers started blowing out intermittently (I believe due to a loose wire). Therefore, I contacted Dell support via chat, and they tried re-installing the audio driver to no avail. I also reported the issue with the uneven trim marking up the screen and the flickering issue. The tech then told me that it would be easier to replace the whole machine with something comparable or better. Contrary to what many others say about Dell Tech Support, I say that it rocks ... if you are under Completecare.

The biggest draw to the system though is its outstanding 16-inch LED backlit screen that provides some amazing color, as long as you can deal with all the reflections. Definitely a powerful system for someone looking for a great graphics display.

With so much power portability suffers, and while the 3.1kg chassis isn’t disastrously heavy, the 226 minute battery life confines you to very short journeys, so if a long lasting battery is important consider the less powerful Asus UL30. Ultimately, though, if you can live with this, the XPS 16 is offers impressive power coupled with style and sophistication that makes it stand out in the crowd. At just over £1100 it’s reasonably priced too.

Dell's Studio XPS 16 is a great addition to the growing Studio lineup. It's probably the sexiest 16" notebook we've seen, and it just might be one of the most handsome gaming notebooks / pseudo-desktop replacements to date. There's no doubt that Dell put a lot of effort into making this one look great, and while the style may not work for everyone, we certainly dug it. In most ways, this is just a larger version of the already-great Studio XPS 13, though the extra screen real estate really set it apart. We were a bit worried by the amount of heat this machine generated even during day-to-day computing, and while the trifecta of video outputs were great, we would've loved an extra USB port or two to really fill things out.

This gradual move to 16:9 aspect ratio displays in notebooks is starting to win us over. Yes, you do lose a few vertical pixels, but given we've seen such pleasures as the 1,600 x 900 13.1in effort in the Sony VAIO Z Series (see: Sony VAIO VGN-Z11WN/B) and the magnificent 1,920 x 1,080, RGB LED one in the Dell Studio XPS 16 we're looking today, there are enough points in the 'pros' column to even things out. Clearly this is good news for Dell, then, since this is the first and only 16in notebook to sport such a display - the closest alternative being Sony's 18.4in VAIO AW11XU/Q, which you won't see south of £2,000. We can't recommend the Dell Studio XPS 16 to everyone because HP's HDX 16 offers a similar feature set at a keener price. However, if you've been hankering after a notebook with desktop quality colour fidelity, then it makes a tantalising proposition - especially when, in the greater scheme of things, the option isn't even that expensive. As such it gets a (qualified) Recommended Award.

If our experience with this 16-inch Studio XPS 1640 is anything to go by, then we're happy to report that it's been a pleasant and entertaining one so far. We quite like the nicely spaced backlit keyboard, responsive trackpad and decent speakers. The slot-loaded optical drive also blends in quite nicely with the overall design and the unit retains much of the design of the XPS machines while obtaining a very Studio-like style, so to speak. If you're none too fussy or picky, you'll find that the specs of the base model should be more than sufficient and that's definitely a good deal for the Studio XPS 1640 (as with our better configured review unit too).

Anyone looking for a cutting-edge multimedia notebook should instantly fall in love with the Dell Studio XPS 16. The stylish design and solid build quality combined with excellent performance and great features make this one of the better desktop replacements for consumers.That said, all this style and power comes at a price ... both literally and figuratively. Not only is the Studio XPS line priced above the Inspiron and current Studio lines but the Studio XPS 16 only offers glossy screens which are sometimes extremely difficult to view under direct sunlight. The system also gets extremely hot because of all the hardware packed inside, and the pre-loaded bloatware might be frustrating to some owners. Still, the Dell Studio XPS 16 is one of the better choices among 16-inch multimedia notebooks.

Dell's Studio XPS 16 added a level of class to their Studio lineup and it continues to do so. Also back are the high color LED backlit displays that are some of the finest in the market. The Core i7 quad core processor adds additional performance. The problem is that many other elements have not been upgraded including a graphics processor many games may be disappointed with and a tendency to run a bit too warm compared to the competition.

The only reason I’ve compared this laptop with the other two in the table, is to show that this one offers a good price-performance ratio. Otherwise, the two other machines have their own reasons (and good ones) for being slightly over priced. This machine doesn’t look as stylish and slick, there’s not much metal in construction and it is quite far from being truly portable. So clearly, aesthetics and build quality have a lot to do when it comes to laptops. And if one brand has a larger fan following than another, then it’s a different ball game altogether.

Dell: Dell Inc. è una multinazionale del settore tecnologico che sviluppa, produce, vende e fornisce assistenza per personal computers ed altri prodotti del medesimo settore. Con sede principale in Texas, Dell ha più di 82.700 impiegati in tutto il mondo (2009). Nel 2006, Dell ha acquisito il produttore di computer hardware Alienware. Nella maggioranza dei paesi in cui opera, i portatili sono venduti direttamente ai consumatori dalla Dell ed ogni portatile è assemblato sulla base delle richieste dei singoli consumatori e delle opzioni disponibili. Ridurre la distanza delle Schede Grafiche per gli utenti che vogliono utilizzare il videogiochi. I nuovi giochi dovrebbero funzionare su queste schede, ma con riduzione dei dettagli e risoluzione mediocre.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3670: La AMD ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3670 è una HD 3650 con clock superiore simile alla vecchia 2600 XT. Rispetto a questa, la HD 3650 dovrebbe riscaldarsi di meno (tecnologia 55nm) e supportare DirectX 10.1.
La scheda dovrebbe avere prestazioni migliori rispetto alla vecchia 8600M GT conseguentemente, i vecchi giochi DirectX 9 dovrebbero essere pienamente utilizzabili con dettagli elevati. I giochi più recenti e pesanti sono giocabili solo con dettagli modesti. 

Queste schede grafiche dovrebbero essere in grado di far funzionare tutti i giochi attuali con un framerates fluido ma rinunciando al livello di dettaglio massimo. Specialmente i giochi impegnativi come Crysis, Age of Conan, o Mass Effect sono utilizzabili soltanto con impostazioni grafiche ridotte. I giochi meno pesanti (e più datati), come Fifa 08, Command & Conquer 3, o Battlefield 2142 possono essere giocati con livello di dettagli più alto.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670: La ATI Mobilty Radon HD 4670 della AMD è un adattatore grafico di fascia media DirectX 10.1 per portatili. Tecnicamente è una Mobility Radeon HD 4650 con un clock superiore.
Le prestazioni di gioco della GPU si collocano tra la desktop HD 4650 e la 4670. Pertanto la maggior parete dei giochi DirectX 9 (come Call of Duty 4, F.E.A.R., o Unreal Tournament 3) dovrebbero essere giocabili con dettagli elevati (in 1024x768). I giochi DX10 pesanti a partire da quelli 2008 come Crysis funzionano in modo fluido solo con dettagli medi.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Questo è il successore del Core Duo e del Core Solo con una pipeline più lunga ed il 5-20% di velocità in più senza avere maggiore consumo di energia. Come aggiunta al design del Core Duo esiste un quarto decoder, una unità amplificata SSE ed una unità logica aritmetica (ALU) addizionale. Il Core 2 Duo per portatili è identico al processore per desktop Core 2 Duo ma il processore per portatili lavora con un voltaggio inferiore (0.95 a 1188 Volt) ed un Frontside bus clock inferiore (1066 vs 667 MHz). Le prestazioni di portatili con clock equivalenti sono inferiori del 20-25% rispetto ai PCs Desktop a causa del Frontside bus clock inferiore e agli hard disks più lenti.

T9400: La T9400 è una veloce CPU dual core di classe media per portatili ed è di base una Core 2 Duo P9500 con un TDP superiore di 35 Watt.

P9700: CPU dual core molto veloce e con 28 Watt di TDP anche molto efficiente dal punto di vista energetico. Rispetto ad altri modelli P, la P9700 offre 6MB di level 2 cache.

Intel Core i7:

720QM: Il Core i7-720QM è il Core i7 Quad più lento del 2009 ed ha un clock tra 1.6 e 2.8 GHz (grazie al Turbo Mode). Di conseguenza, il processore combina i vantaggi delle veloci CPUs single core e delle lente CPUs quad-core. Rispetto alle più veloci CPUs Core i7, la 720QM ha solo 6MB di L3 Cache.

Intel Core i5:

520M: Il Core i5-520M ha solo 3 MB di L3 Cache (rispetto alla I7-640M) ed un clock tra 2.4-2.93 GHz (Turbo Mode). Grazie all'Hyperthreading, possono essere processati 4 threads contemporaneamente. Nel pacchetto è inclusa anche una scheda grafica (GMA HD 3150) ed un controller memoria DDR3.

15.6: La variante di display da 15 pollici rientra tra lo standard ed è utilizzata da più della metà di tutti i portatili. I display da 15.4 pollici in 16:10 sono lo standard per i portatili. Attualmente, sempre più appaiono i displays 16:9 da 15.6 pollici. Lo svantaggio è che la lettura di testi è estenuante per gli occhi. Risoluzioni elevate difficilmente potranno essere utilizzate.

16.0: Le varianti di display da 16 pollici esistono sin dal 2008 ed hanno parzialmente assorbito la fetta di mercato dei portatili da 15 pollici. La ragione per cui così tante persone preferiscono displays con dimensioni medie dipende dal fatto che tale dimensione non crea particolari problemi alla vista, non richiede troppa energia ed i portatili riescono ad avere dimensioni abbastanza compatte.

Questo peso è medio per i notebooks. Di conseguenza la numerosità di portatili con schermo da 15-16 pollici è condizionata proprio dal peso.
